I'm Not Her Substitute
エピソード1
"Let's divorce!"
The man's voice was as indifferent as ever. "You must have noticed the news on the Internet."
Vera Bethric suddenly clenched her fists. Her nails stuck into her skin, and the pain in her palm prevented her from losing her mind. Her pale face became even more haggard.
The breaking news in the past two days rushed into her mind: "Nord Lemming, the president of Farsight International, went to Mirinia to date his first love Coral Brooks."
Major media frantically reposted the photo of the two embracing each other on the street. Everyone assumed they would get married soon and gave their blessings on the internet.
Vera smiled wryly, hid the pain in her heart, and took over the divorce agreement.
She was shocked when she saw the news,
Because Coral died in a car accident five years ago.
Nord was miserable after he lost his lover. His father worried that he might never move on, so he found Vera and made a deal with her because she looked similar to Coral.
The Lemming family paid off Vera's father, Manson Bethric's huge guarantee compensation, while Vera had to marry Nord as Coral.
Vera agreed.
She abandoned her secret feelings and tried her best to act like Coral after she married into the Lemming family.
Now, the person she had impersonated for three years was back. She wasn't dead.
Vera's show finally came to an end.
However, she attached to her character so much that she forgot it was just a deal.
Vera ignored her heartache and flipped through the divorce agreement. "We... have been married for three years!"
She wondered if he had no feelings for her after all these years.
Nord's gaze fixed on her pale face for a few seconds, then he frowned slightly and looked down.
Her black knit dress outlined her lovely figure, her long black hair hung loosely over her shoulders, and her neckline was slightly open, revealing her fair skin.
Nord felt something smooth and warm. He immediately looked away and cut off those flirty scenes.
His cold voice was like a hammer that crashed into her bones. "You can propose any term you want!"
Vera only wanted to escape when she met his calm gaze. She finally understood everything.
Nord didn't love her.
He had never hidden this fact during their three-year marriage.
Vera looked down and crossed out the compensation terms on the agreement. "I don't want these!"
Nord glanced over the terms. "You deserve it!"
"Ask them to make two more copies!" Vera got up, poured a glass of hot water, and held back her tears before she turned to look at him. "Delete these terms, and I will sign it!"
The warmth of the glass seeped into her palm and melted some coldness in her heart.
Nord stared at her for a few seconds before he called his assistant. "Delete the compensation terms and send me two more copies!"
Vera felt another heartache. She looked down as her long eyelashes covered the tears in her eyes.
There was a moment of silence until the ringing doorbell pulled her back from her thoughts.
Nord's assistant Thomas Thime came in with two new copies. "Mr. Nord!"
"Give them to her!" Nord glanced at Vera.
Thomas looked over. The girl who always had a smile was pale at the moment, and she seemed like a stray cat with her slender figure full of loneliness. "Please!"
"Thank you!" Vera glanced over the agreement and saw those compensation terms had been deleted.
She had no other reason to refuse!
She took a pen and signed her name on the agreement.
She pressed on the paper and reluctantly moved it to the opposite.
Nord took away the document and said, "I'll leave this house to you, and Thomas will help with the follow-up procedures. You can do whatever you want to my stuff."
"Okay!" The pain in her heart was too much. She could feel it even when speaking, making her hard to breathe.
She heard the sound of footsteps becoming further. And then, the door was closed.
Vera clenched the armrest with all her remaining strength. Her smile had long gone, and her sorrow streamed down with tears.
Her phone rang again and again.
Vera wiped away her tears and answered the call. "Fabiola!"
Fabiola seemed to hear her sobbing and comforted her softly. "Your father won't rest in peace if he knows!"
Vera responded, "It's very late. Do you need anything?"
"I saw a men's black coat," said Fabiola, "you brought it here, right?"
Vera suddenly remembered what had happened on the 20th, which was the day that made her heart broken.
That day, she spent a lot of time picking and buying a coat for Nord. As soon as she left the mall, a phone call brought her one of the most painful memories of her life.
The caller told her that her father was killed on the spot in a car accident, and she needed to hurry over to deal with this matter.
At that moment, she stood on the crowded street and felt the cold wind had torn a huge hole in her heart.
She had no time to go home and hurriedly took a taxi.
She couldn't reach her younger brother Nate Bethric or Nord when she was on her way.
She was alone and didn't know who to turn to.
In the morgue, Manson lay there alone under a white cloth.
She knelt on the floor, holding his cold hand, and couldn't stop crying.
After she finished her father's funeral in great sorrow, Nord returned to Marti City with his blatant scandal.
She was in a hurry and left the black coat at Fabiola's house in the village.
Vera said, "You can give this coat to Willy!"
Willy and Fabiola helped her with Manson's funeral. Otherwise, she would never make it through.
Besides, she couldn't give it to Nord since they were about to divorce.
Vera dragged out her suitcase and began to pack up.
She checked the closet and took many pictures of several sets of high-end suits before putting them in her suitcase.
In the past three years, she had saved money and time to buy these for him.
Now, since he didn't want them anymore, she would sell them on eBay.
Nord was like a set of high-end suits that she didn't deserve to own, so she decided to give up on him forever.
She suddenly saw her certificate of award from the youth group's design competition that she had kept for three years.
She was in a daze. It seemed that she had lost too many things.
She spent everything she got on a man who never belonged to her. In the end, she even lost herself.
The time had come to wake up and start over!
