简介
A cold legal document severs their years-long bond. It wasn't betrayal that drove them apart, but a silence more destructive than any fight.
He locks himself in his workshop, drowning his regret in noise and steel; she flees to her past, trying to heal a world away from him. But a single, disastrous phone call—and a fatal misunderstanding—plunges her into final despair.
This time, can Iron Man, stripped of his armor, use a mortal heart to win back the love he let go?
章節1
The silence in the back of the armored Audi was absolute. It was a sterile, manufactured quiet, a world away from the chaotic symphony of a workshop or the hum of a bustling tower. Pepper Potts stared at the StarkPad on her lap. The screen glowed with the cold, impersonal light of a finalized legal document. A single, blinking cursor pulsed in the signature field.
Virginia Potts.
Her thumb hovered over the biometric authentication pad. One press. That’s all it would take to sever the last official tie that bound her to Tony Stark. It wasn’t a divorce—they’d never had a wedding. It was a “dissolution of domestic partnership and complete division of assets.” A bloodless, corporate term for a heart being cleaved in two.
She pressed her thumb to the glass. A green checkmark bloomed on the screen. Authenticated.
The document vanished, replaced by a confirmation receipt sent to her private server. It was done. She felt… nothing. A vast, hollow numbness where grief or relief was supposed to be.
Her own professionally curated composure was beginning to fray at the edges. She instructed the driver to pull over, the car gliding to a stop on a quiet, tree-lined street far from the glass-and-steel canyons of Manhattan.
Her hands trembled as she pulled out her phone and hit a speed dial. It rang twice.
“Talk to me,” a low, familiar voice said. No preamble. That was Natasha.
“I signed them,” Pepper whispered, the words feeling alien in her mouth.
The silence that followed was immediate, but not empty. It was watchful. “And?” Natasha finally asked.
“And I should feel something, right? Relief? Closure? Anything?” Pepper tried to laugh, but it came out as a strangled gasp. “I don’t feel lighter, Nat. I thought ending it would ease something inside me, like pulling out a thorn. But it’s like… I tore off a piece of myself and walked out pretending I don’t notice the blood.”
Natasha didn’t offer platitudes. She just listened.
“He didn’t fight it,” Pepper continued, her voice barely a whisper. “Not that I expected him to. That’s who we’ve become. Civil. Efficient. Two people who compartmentalize everything just so we don’t inconvenience the other.” Her voice cracked. “I slept next to that man for years, Nat. How do you go from sharing a life to sharing a legal team?”
“I wish I had an answer,” Natasha said softly. “You did everything you could.”
“Did I?” Pepper leaned her head back against the cool leather, a single tear tracing a hot path down her cheek. “Or did I just get tired? We stopped having dinner. We stopped talking about anything that wasn't an alien invasion or a board meeting. I miss… I miss arguing with him about what movie to watch.”
The absurdity of it, the domestic, mundane ache, was what finally broke her. A sob hitched in her throat, and she didn’t hold it back. She wept. Silently, bitterly, for the man in the iron suit and the man who loved cheeseburgers, for the life they had built and the silence that had eroded it to dust.
After ending the call with Natasha, she sat in the stillness, her breathing ragged. Her phone buzzed again. She almost ignored it, but the caller ID made her pause. Happy Hogan.
Her finger trembled as she answered. “Happy?”
“Hey, Pep. Just… checking in.” His voice was unnaturally gentle. He was a man of gruff affection, not soft words. It set her on edge.
“I’m fine, Happy.” A reflexive lie.
A long pause. Then, “He’s not.”
Pepper’s breath caught. “What?”
“He’s locked himself in the workshop. Has been for two days. Won’t talk to me, won’t talk to Rhodey. Just… noise. Rock music and the sound of him breaking things only to rebuild them.” Happy sighed, a heavy, weary sound. “I brought him a cheeseburger. He just stared at it.”
Pepper closed her eyes. The cheeseburger. It was their thing.
“I just thought… I thought you should know,” Happy said, his voice thick with a worry he couldn’t hide. “The kid… he doesn’t know how to fight for things he thinks he’s already broken, Pep. He just knows how to armor up.”
She whispered a thank you and ended the call. He thinks he’s already broken it.
The numbness receded, replaced by a familiar, agonizing ache. For the first time, she realized the silence she had been living in had an echo. And in his workshop, surrounded by iron and noise, he was living in it too.
