Heartbreak Billionaire He Should Never Have Let Go
简介
With his dying first love down to her last six months, he coolly handed his wife, Chloe, a set of divorce papers. "It's just for show," he murmured, promising a swift remarriage once the tragedy had passed.
Chloe didn't shed a tear. She signed her name, then silently walked away—to a clinic, where she ended the life of their unborn child. Vanishing without a trace, she built a new life on a distant coast, determined to erase her past.
When Julian finally unraveled and hunted her down, he discovered the devastating secret of the child he never knew. He fell to his knees, offering his fortune and his soul for a forgiveness he could never earn.
But her response was a check, her voice ice: "Now we're even." In the end, she boarded a flight to Oxford, ascending to a future he could never touch, leaving him forever stranded on an island of his own making, an island named Regret.

The scent of roasted garlic and rosemary filled their small, warm apartment. Chloe hummed along to the soft jazz playing from the speaker in the corner, giving the simmering sauce one last stir. Everything was perfect. The table was set with the good plates they rarely used, two candles flickered between them, and a bottle of their favorite red wine was breathing on the counter.
“One year,” she whispered to herself, a smile touching her lips. One year since she had married Julian, and every day had felt like a continuation of this warmth, this easy, encompassing love.
The sound of a key in the lock made her heart do a familiar little flutter.
“I’m home,” Julian’s voice called out, rich and tired.
“In the kitchen,” she replied, turning just as he appeared in the doorway. He was still in his sharp suit, but his tie was loosened. His eyes, the color of warm honey, lit up when they saw her.
“Wow,” he said, his voice softening. He dropped his briefcase and came to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close. He smelled of the crisp city air and himself. “Happy anniversary, my love.”
“Happy anniversary,” she murmured into his chest, melting into his embrace. “Did you think I’d forget?”
“I was hoping you wouldn’t.” He pulled back, his hands framing her face. He held up a small, long box. “Although I brought a little something, just in case.”
Chloe’s eyes widened. “Julian, you didn’t have to.”
“Open it.”
She carefully untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. Nestled on a bed of black velvet was a delicate silver necklace, with a single, small pendant shaped like an intertwined ‘J’ and ‘C’. It was simple, elegant, and utterly them.
“It’s beautiful,” she breathed, her fingers tracing the smooth metal.
“Let me,” he said, taking it from the box. His fingers brushed the back of her neck as he fastened the clasp, sending a shiver down her spine. He kissed the spot his fingers had just touched. “There. Perfect.”
Dinner was filled with laughter and shared memories.
“Do you remember our first date?” Chloe asked, swirling the wine in her glass. “You were so nervous you spilled coffee all over your shirt.”
Julian groaned dramatically. “And you, instead of laughing, just calmly handed me a napkin and said, ‘It brings out the color in your eyes.’ I think I fell in love with you right then.”
“No, you didn’t,” she teased. “You fell in love with me when I beat you at mini-golf two weeks later.”
“That too,” he conceded with a grin. “My competitive, beautiful wife.”
They talked for over an hour, their conversation an easy dance of past and present. But just as Chloe was about to bring out the dessert she’d made, Julian’s phone, left on the counter, buzzed insistently.
He glanced at the screen, and the light in his eyes flickered out, replaced by something guarded. “Sorry, I have to take this. It’s… work.”
“On our anniversary?” Chloe asked, a hint of disappointment in her voice.
“I know. I’m so sorry. I’ll be quick, I promise,” he said, his smile not quite reaching his eyes. He picked up the phone and walked out onto the small balcony, sliding the glass door almost completely shut behind him.
Chloe watched his back. He was turned away from her, one hand shoved in his pocket, his shoulders tense. She couldn’t hear his words, only the low, urgent murmur of his voice. It wasn’t his usual work tone—this was something else. Softer, yet heavier. She saw his head drop slightly, his free hand coming up to rub the back of his neck, a gesture he only made when he was deeply stressed or pained.
A small, cold knot formed in her stomach. She told herself it was nothing. He was a busy man with a demanding job. But the feeling lingered, a tiny shadow on a perfect evening.
When he came back inside a few minutes later, the guarded look was gone, replaced by an overly bright smile.
“All done,” he announced, pulling her into his arms. “Now, where were we?”
He didn't explain the call. He just kissed her, a deep, passionate kiss that felt like an apology and a distraction all at once. He held her tight, his face buried in her hair.
“I love you, Chloe,” he whispered, his voice thick with an emotion she couldn’t quite place. “Always. Don’t ever forget that.”
“I love you too,” she said, choosing to ignore the shadow, to believe in the man holding her.
Under the moonlight streaming through the window, she let his promise wash over her, even as the cold knot in her stomach refused to completely dissolve.
