Her Mafia Cowboy

The rain was a cold, constant slap against the restaurant's window, mirroring the sting on my cheek where Adriana’s words had landed harder than her hand ever could.
“I can’t do this anymore, Luca.” Her voice, once my harbor, was now the storm sinking the ship. “I can’t keep pretending you’ll come home without blood under your fingernails. I can’t listen to you lie about where you’ve been, who you’ve hurt. You’re losing yourself. The man I loved is already dead.”
That’s the business, Addie. It’s the life. The words died on my tongue. She wouldn’t understand. She shouldn’t have to. The Costello Family crest wasn’t just a tattoo over my heart; it was a fucking tombstone marking the grave of the man she wanted.
I watched her walk away, her silhouette dissolving into the downpour and the city’s weeping neon. A part of me, the best part, screamed to go after her. But my feet were bolted to the pavement, shackled by a lifetime of oaths sworn in blood and cigar smoke. I was a Costello Capo. I didn’t run after things. I took them. But I couldn’t take back the light in her eyes.
My burner phone vibrated, a serpent in my pocket. A summons. The family always knew when to kick you when you were down.
The Don’s cigar lounge was a mausoleum of mahogany and broken promises. The air, thick with the ghosts of a thousand bad decisions, clung to me like a shroud. My mentor, Aleksandr “The Bear” Volkov, stood by the fireplace, his massive frame a bulwark against the Family’s usual bullshit. The concern in his eyes was as plain as the Cyrillic ink crawling up his neck.
“Luca,” he rumbled, his voice a low gravel churn. “This job… it stinks.”
“They all stink, Aleks.”
“This one is different. They’re asking you to babysit the Rinaldi kid. The one who owes everyone money and respect. It’s a message, and you’re the ink.”
He was right. It was a shit detail. A punishment for being the Costello who still clung to an outdated code of honor in an era of senseless brutality. And the one handing out the punishment, I knew without being told, was Ronan “The Ghost” Maguire. The Irish snake slithering through our Italian garden, his ambition a poison that had been slowly killing the Family from the inside. He hated me because I was everything he wasn't: respected, not just feared.
“An order’s an order,” I said, meeting Volkov’s gaze. It was the lie we both had to live with.
He just shook his head, the sad resignation of an old lion watching a young one walk into a hunter’s snare. “Be careful, malysh. The Ghost hunts in the dark.”
