Piacenza, May 1947. The sky presented a grey-blue hue as though scorched by relentless heat, and the air was thick with granular dust and an inescapable restlessness. Though the smoke of war had dissipated from this stretch of the Apennine Peninsula for a full two years, the reconstruction of order proved far more arduous than its destruction. Beyond the barriers at the track's edge, incompletely cleared rubble and shell craters of varying depths still stubbornly commanded the eye; those fractured concrete edges cast razor-sharp shadows under the vicious early-summer sun, silently testifying to the all-consuming annihilation that had swept through not long before. He stood beneath the canvas awning of the pit area, where a damp, hot breeze carried the acrid stench of high-octane fuel, the burnt tang of cheap tobacco, and the sour reek of human sweat, funnelling directly into his nostrils. He paid no attention to the spectators around him — those who had come seeking livelihood and fleeting thrills — his gaze hammered immovably onto the 125 S racing car before him: the machine he had conceived with his own mind, revised endlessly on paper, and finally beaten into form in a crude workshop.

It was a red of extreme aggression. Not the tepid warmth of a setting sun, nor the muted heaviness of velvet drapes in a Catholic cathedral, but a searing, eye-piercing colour — the colour of blood that seemed to flow beneath the sunlight. This colour sheathed the streamlined body hammered from aluminium alloy, cleaving it absolutely from the grey desolation and ruin that surrounded it. He took half a step forward, pressing his rough fingertips against the cold, subtly curved metal of the engine hood. The temperature of the metal conducted through his fingertips to his nerve endings; he could clearly perceive, beneath this thin steel shell, the terrifying power contained within the mechanical heart that had not yet awakened. It was a perfect sixty-degree V12 engine — every piston, every connecting rod, every valve set had been subjected to his near-tyrannical calculations and refinements. In his mind, absolute reason and boiling fervour were locked in combat: reason told him this was merely an industrial product assembled from the laws of thermodynamics and mechanical physics; yet fervour howled through his blood that this machine had transcended the category of a mere vehicle — it was an extension of will itself. And yet his fingers paused at the edge of the engine hood, seized by something subtle and unnameable — a hollowness. This steel shell with its twelve chambers lacked nothing, save for the one thing that could truly bring it to life, that could proclaim to the world the absoluteness of its existence: a mark upon its soul.

Footsteps behind him shattered his reverie. A mechanic in oil-stained overalls hurried over, gripping a heavy chrome-vanadium wrench. The mechanic's eyes lingered for a moment on the deliberately blank shield-shaped area at the front of the car body, then he lowered his voice and tentatively asked whether, on this day of the car's debut, they should temporarily spray on some lettering representing a sponsor, or perhaps a traditional coat of arms befitting the family's honour. He did not answer immediately. In silence, he plucked the wrench from the mechanic's rough palm. He walked to the side of the car and fitted the wrench onto a chassis bolt that had loosened slightly during earlier testing. The muscles of his forearm snapped taut in an instant, veins bulging beneath oil-blackened skin, and he wrenched it with sudden, violent force. The metal threads ground against each other in ferocious friction, erupting in a shriek so piercing it nearly split the eardrums. That shriek cut through the cacophony of the pit area with startling abruptness — and, as if by miracle, silenced the mechanic.

He tossed the wrench back into the toolbox with a dull clang. His low voice carried not a trace of negotiation as he flatly rejected the proposals of mediocre lettering and stale heraldry. In his framework of belief, this was emphatically not a toy for the wealthy to amuse themselves with on weekends, nor a showpiece for flaunting fortune. This was the weapon with which he sought to re-establish absolute order amid the ravaged ruins of the postwar world, upon the wasteland of moral and economic collapse. That blank space — the shield-shaped area at the very front of the car, the point that would tear the first breach through wind resistance — must belong to a symbol capable of representing absolute speed and the pure will to conquer. Until he found the totem worthy of matching the soul of this twelve-cylinder beast, until that undeniable sense of destiny descended upon him, he would rather let this machine remain nameless, let it face the world's scrutiny in a state of near-cruel blankness.

The pre-race preparations advanced swiftly amid the tense yet orderly clatter of mechanical collision. He pushed aside the engineers attempting their final briefings and climbed alone into the cockpit — so narrow it bordered on punishing. No excess padding, no comfortable trim; the rough seat, reeking of tanned leather, pressed tight against his spine, transmitting every trace of the chassis's coldness and rigidity to his torso without mercy. He pulled on his well-worn leather gloves and gripped the steering wheel — unassisted, impossibly heavy — in a death grip. He closed his eyes, sealing out the chaos of the outside world. In that moment of darkness, his mind conjured, unbidden, the legends of the sky he had heard during the war years — in the thundering munitions factories, on those nights drenched in gunpowder and despair.

Those pilots who tore at each other amid the clouds aboard single-wing fighters; those young men who cast aside life and death at altitudes of thousands of metres, only to be reduced, together with their steel, to charcoal. Before heavy machine-gun bullets shredded them apart, in the final seconds of a stalling aircraft's plunge, at the very instant gravity stripped them of their lives — what did the ultimate limit they experienced look like? That tremor of breaking free from the earth's bonds, of embracing death in absolute solitude — what was its texture? He snapped his eyes open. The cold graduations of the instrument panel reflected in his pupils. His right foot, driven by something close to fury, stamped down hard on the accelerator pedal.

The sleeping beast was awakened in an instant. The carburettor brutally pumped a high-concentration fuel-air mixture into the combustion chambers; at the moment the spark plugs fired, all twelve cylinders simultaneously erupted in a roar that tore the air apart. It was not the monotonous clatter of an ordinary internal combustion engine, but a grand symphony composed of explosions and metallic collision. A colossal vibration detonated from the depths of the engine bay, travelling through the rigid chassis and the rough seat, transmitting without obstruction to his coccyx, then spreading to every bone in his body. His internal organs resonated faintly with the tremor. He understood with absolute clarity: standing on this track strewn with dust and gravel, his innermost desire had long surpassed a simple victory measured by stopwatches and trophies. What he wanted was to replicate, upon this war-ravaged earth, using this machine he had forged with his own hands, the ultimate tremor experienced by those fallen aviators — the sensation of breaking free from gravity itself.

Ahead on the starting grid, the marshal holding the chequered flag had already raised his arm high. In that instant, the roaring of the grandstands, the clanging of tools in the pits, even the howl of wind through the ruins — all faded from his ears with miraculous speed. The entire world was placed on mute. Within his auditory system, only the rhythmic yet savage respiration of those twelve cylinders remained, like the deep breathing of some primordial beast before it launched its killing strike. He raised his hand and pulled down the goggles with their thick rubber rims; the lenses instantly blocked the gale laden with the heavy scent of engine oil and grit, and sealed away the reckless fervour burning in the depths of his eyes.

The clutch pedal was released with a savage stamp of his left foot.

Power poured through the driveshaft onto the rear wheels without a millisecond's hesitation and without the faintest reserve. The rear of the red 125 S lurched violently downward; the tyres engaged in ferocious friction with the coarse asphalt, and scorched black rubber marks, accompanied by acrid blue smoke, instantly scarred the ground with two ruler-straight wounds. This nameless machine transformed into a beast driven to absolute fury, catapulting forward in a tidal wave of acceleration that pinned the body to the seat. His spine was nailed to the backrest, his cervical vertebrae bearing immense G-forces, yet through the gale and the shuddering he fought to keep his eyes wide open, his gaze biting down on the narrowing track ahead. The surrounding scenery began to stretch into blurred streaks. He knew: this race was not a contest at all — it was his sacrifice to this nameless machine. He poured his flesh, his reason, and every ounce of his hubris into this steel shell, and at every edge of near-catastrophe, in every savage bite of rubber against ground, he waited for the moment that would grant this car its true life.
