Chapter1
The rain in The Haven never seemed to wash anything clean; it only made the shadows slicker. Inside the abandoned Orpheum Theater, the air smelled of ozone and decades of dust. Four strangers stood in a loose circle on the rotting stage, the only light emanating from the synchronized countdown timers on their phones. Day 1. 167:59:42.
Dr. Elias Thorne adjusted his tailored cuffs, his eyes darting between the other three. He was already profiling them. The girl in the oversized hoodie, pacing nervously and clutching a customized tablet—agoraphobic, highly intelligent, likely the hacker, Jax. The woman in the trench coat, discreetly rolling a micro-recorder between her fingers—perceptive, unbothered by the silence, Finch, the podcaster. And the mountain of a man in the corner, radiating a quiet, dangerous stillness. Marcus Vance. Former Homicide.
"An unsigned invitation on archival-grade City Hall stock," Marcus rumbled, holding up a cream-colored envelope. "And a digital timer that bypassed my encrypted firewall in three seconds. Whoever called this meeting wants a spectacle."
"They want an autopsy," Elias corrected smoothly, stepping into the center. "The letter says to unravel the city's greatest lie. The Haven boasts a zero-percent violent crime rate. We all know human nature is a mathematical equation, and zero is a statistical impossibility. The peace is synthetic."
"It's a dead-man's switch," Jax muttered, their voice a rapid-fire staccato, eyes glued to the screen. "The delivery protocols for the messages were automated. Routed through fifty proxies. The sender didn't just schedule this; they locked it down. If we don't find the core server in seven days, the encryption keys holding the data delete themselves. The trail goes cold forever."
"Then we'd better start walking," Finch said, her eyes flashing with a predatory curiosity. "I've tracked sixteen 'accidental' deaths in the last year. All key dissidents. All ruled tragedies. Let's see what’s buried beneath the pavement."
