Chapter1
If you ask any member of the Karasuno High School Volleyball Club about Suga’s family, you’ll get a handful of smiles, a few shrugs, and, if you’re lucky, a story or two about the little sister who visits the gym every so often. What they won’t tell you—because most of them don’t know—is how much Suga’s little sister, Yuki Sugawara, means to him.
Yuki was fourteen, with hair the color of fresh snow, eyes like the sky on a clear winter morning, and a smile that could melt even Tsukishima’s icy glare. She was adorable in a way that seemed almost magical, which embarrassed her more than it flattered her, but her soft demeanor belied a quiet stubbornness that ran in the family.
It was a breezy Wednesday afternoon when Yuki realized her brother had left his lunch on the kitchen counter. She stared at the neat bento box, decorated with little volleyball stickers she’d stuck on as a joke, and sighed. Suga was always so careful, but excitement about the upcoming practice match against Nekoma had clearly distracted him.
She glanced at the clock. If she hurried, she could catch him before practice started. With determination, Yuki tied her hair into a messy ponytail, slung her schoolbag over her shoulder, and grabbed the bento. As she left, her mother called after her to be careful and not to let the boys at the gym tease her.
Yuki grinned. “They wouldn’t dare. Suga would kill them.”
Karasuno High was only a fifteen-minute walk from the Sugawara house. Yuki hummed to herself as she made her way down the familiar streets, the bento box clutched carefully in her hands. She wondered if she’d see Kageyama and Hinata arguing today, or if Nishinoya would try to impress her again with one of his wild dives.
The gym was already buzzing with the sounds of squeaking shoes and flying volleyballs when Yuki arrived. She peered through the glass door, spotting her brother stretching near the bench. He looked so focused, so much like the team’s reliable vice-captain, that she almost hesitated to interrupt.
But then she saw Daichi and Asahi, and her nerves melted away. The third-years had always been kind to her, treating her like a little sister as much as Suga did.
Taking a deep breath, Yuki slid open the door. Instantly, the racket died down as a few heads turned her way.
“Oi! Suga, your sister’s here!” Tanaka bellowed, earning a swat on the head from Daichi.
Hinata rushed over, nearly tripping on his shoelaces. “Yuki-chan! Did you come to cheer us on?”
Yuki giggled, shaking her head. “No, I came to bring Suga his lunch. He forgot it at home.”
Suga jogged over, a sheepish grin on his face. “I knew I was forgetting something! Thanks, Yuki. You’re a lifesaver.”
She handed over the bento. “You owe me. I want ice cream later.”
“Deal,” Suga promised, ruffling her hair.
Kageyama sidled up, peering at the bento with interest. “Did you make it?”
Yuki shook her head. “Mom did. But I helped with the rice balls.”
“They’re the best,” Suga declared, already unwrapping the box. Asahi and Daichi wandered over, drawn by the prospect of food.
“You always take such good care of him,” Asahi said with a smile. “He’s lucky to have you.”
Yuki blushed, ducking her head. “He takes care of me too.”
Tanaka, never one to miss an opportunity, put on his best suave face. “Yuki-chan, if you ever want to bring extra lunches…”
Suga raised an eyebrow. “You finish that sentence, Tanaka, and you’ll be running laps until you drop.”
The team burst into laughter, and Yuki felt the last of her nervousness fade away. She loved these moments—the energy, the camaraderie, the way everyone looked out for each other.
Practice started soon after, but Suga insisted Yuki stay and watch for a while. She found a spot on the bleachers, chatting with Shimizu-senpai and occasionally calling out encouragements. Hinata and Kageyama played like they were on fire, each determined to outdo the other. Noya’s saves were as spectacular as ever, and Tsukishima’s snark was met with equally dry retorts from Yamaguchi.
Yuki found herself clapping and cheering with the rest of the team, swept up in the excitement. It was easy to see why Suga loved being part of Karasuno. Here, everyone had a place, a purpose, a family beyond blood.
During a break, Suga sat with her on the bleachers, towel draped around his neck.
“You okay, Yuki? Not too bored?”
She shook her head. “This is fun. I like watching you play.”
He grinned, nudging her gently. “I like having you here. You should come more often.”
She glanced at the court, where Hinata was bouncing on his toes, eager to get back into the game. “I think your team is really cool. They’re lucky to have you.”
Suga looked surprised, then touched. “Thanks, Yuki. That means a lot.”
From across the court, Tanaka and Noya were gesturing wildly, trying to get Yuki’s attention. She waved, laughing as they struck ridiculous poses.
“You know,” Suga said thoughtfully, “when you’re older, you could join the girls’ team. I bet you’d be great.”
Yuki shook her head with a smile. “I like watching you play more than playing myself. I get too nervous.”
He slung an arm around her shoulders. “That’s okay. You’re perfect just the way you are.”
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, practice wound down. The team gathered for a final huddle, sweaty and exhausted but clearly satisfied.
“Thanks for coming, Yuki-chan!” Hinata called as she packed up her things.
“Come back soon!” Daichi added.
“Bring more food!” Tanaka yelled, dodging another swat from Suga.
Yuki laughed, waving to everyone as Suga walked her home. The air was cool and crisp, and for a moment, everything felt perfect.
“You really like your team, huh?” she said as they strolled.
“They’re the best,” Suga replied simply. “But you’re my favorite little sister.”
She rolled her eyes. “I’m your only little sister.”
“Still counts.”
They walked in comfortable silence, the bond between them as steady and warm as the setting sun. Yuki knew she’d be back at the gym again soon—after all, Suga was always forgetting something, and she was always there to bring it to him. But more than that, she liked being part of his world, just for a little while.
Sometimes, family wasn’t just the people you lived with. Sometimes, it was a gym full of rowdy boys, a bento box, and the knowledge that you belonged.
And for Yuki Sugawara, that was more than enough.
