Title: The Whispering Hour
Chapter 1: The Birthday Whisper
Mira had always sensed she was different, but nothing changed her world like her fifteenth birthday. That night, after blowing out the candles on her cake, a breeze swept through her dimly lit bedroom. As she brushed her hair, a voice—gentle and familiar—whispered her name: “Mira.” She spun around, heart pounding. It was her grandmother, gone for two years, standing by the window with a soft, shimmering glow.
“You have a gift, Mira,” her grandmother said. “You can hear us. Don’t be afraid.”
Mira took a step back, crying out in fear, her heart racing in confusion. The shimmering vision of her grandmother didn’t move, only smiled softly, her eyes full of understanding. Mira’s hands trembled. She pressed herself against her dresser, shaking her head in disbelief.
“Why are you here?” Mira whispered, her voice barely more than a breath.
“To help you. To tell you that you’re not alone,” her grandmother replied, the words floating like feathers in the air. “You have a gift, Mira. It may seem frightening now, but you will learn to use it.”
Mira felt tears prick her eyes. “I don’t want it. I don’t want to talk to ghosts.”
Her grandmother’s gaze grew gentle. “The dead are not here to harm you. Many only wish to be heard.”
Mira’s fear mingled with a strange curiosity. She glanced at the open window, the curtains fluttering in the night breeze, and when she looked back, her grandmother was gone—leaving behind only the faint scent of lavender and the knowledge that nothing would ever be the same.
