Synopsis

Daniel Blackwood made me wear a maid's uniform to a charity gala and serve wine to his mistress in front of everyone.

The entire room was watching, waiting to see me humiliated, whispering that I was nothing more than a dog the Blackwood family kept on a leash.

I didn't cry. I simply placed the divorce papers in front of him. He lunged forward, grabbed me by the throat, and threatened to cut off all funding for my mother's and brother's medical care.

Just when I thought I had no way out, the true head of the Blackwood family, Thomas Blackwood, leaned in behind me and whispered, "Divorce him. I'll take care of you."

Chapter1

The Blackwood Family's annual charity gala, the most exclusive social event in Los Angeles. Crystal chandeliers cast dancing light across champagne glasses, while the air hung heavy with expensive perfume and fresh lilies.

"Emily, since you're here, don't just stand around."

Daniel Blackwood's voice came from behind, dripping with casual malice. He threw a black-and-white maid's uniform onto the carpet in front of me.

"Jessica's feet have been swollen lately. She needs someone to take care of her. Go put this on and attend to her tonight."

The surrounding chatter died instantly. Every eye fixed on me—mockery, pity, and that unmistakable thrill of watching a train wreck in real time.

I stared at the uniform on the floor, nails digging into my palms. "Daniel, I'm your wife."

"Wife?" Daniel barked out a laugh, turning to Jessica Jones beside him. "Darling, she says she's my wife."

Jessica wore the season's latest haute couture like armor, every inch the peacock. She covered her mouth with a delicate laugh. "Daniel, don't be cruel. Emily means well, even if... well, her outfit isn't exactly event-appropriate. But it's for charity, so I'm sure everyone will understand."

"Did you hear that?" Daniel's eyes went cold. "This is your chance to atone. Don't forget—without my mother's charity, you and your crippled brother would've starved on the streets."

Atonement.

The word pierced like a blade. Seven years ago, on a rain-soaked night, my father's car slammed into Daniel's father's. Both vehicles tumbled down the highway in flames. My father died instantly. Daniel's father didn't make it either.

That accident shattered two families. My mother fell into a vegetative state. My brother Ryan suffered spinal damage—paralyzed for life. And me? Burdened with the debt of two lives, I became the Blackwood family's "charity project" and Daniel's personal punching bag.

I bent down and picked up the uniform.

"Fine." The word left my mouth flat and cold.

Twenty minutes later, I stepped into the banquet hall wearing that uniform—clearly a size too small. The hem rode up with every step, each one requiring a small act of courage.

"That's more like it." Daniel raised his glass. "Now pour Jessica some wine."

I gripped the heavy bottle and crossed to Jessica. She stuck out her foot.

Red wine arced through the air, splattering across her gown like a spray of blood.

"Oh my God!" Jessica shrieked. "You clumsy bitch! You ruined my dress!"

"I'm sorry—"

"Sorry doesn't fix it." Daniel strode over and seized my wrist, his grip grinding bone. "Kneel. Wipe it clean."

The hall went silent.

I looked up at Daniel—my husband in name only. His eyes held nothing but disgust. Not a shred of warmth.

Seven years. I'd endured seven years of this for my mother's ventilator, for Ryan's medical bills.

But today, I was done.

I wrenched my wrist free and straightened.

"No."

Daniel blinked. Then he laughed, low and dangerous. "What did you say?"

"I said no." I pulled a folded document from my pocket and dropped it on the nearest table. "These are divorce papers. Sign them."

A collective gasp swept through the room.

Daniel's smile vanished. He closed the distance in one stride, hand clamping around my throat as he slammed me against the wall.

"Divorce?" His voice dropped to a growl. "Have you forgotten who pays your mother's medical bills? Who keeps that useless brother of yours alive?"

My vision blurred. Face burning, hands clawing at his arm.

"One phone call and I cut off every cent to St. Mary's." Daniel leaned in, breath hot against my ear. "Your half-dead mother and crippled brother can die in the gutter where they belong."

Tears finally broke free. Not from fear—from despair.

He always knew exactly where to twist the knife.

Just as darkness crept in at the edges, a voice cut through the crowd—deep, commanding.

"Let her go."

Two words. Absolute authority.

Daniel's hand went rigid. He released me.

I gasped, leaning against the wall, vision swimming. A tall figure approached.

Thomas Blackwood.

The true power behind the Blackwood empire. Daniel's uncle. He wore a dark suit tailored to perfection, radiating cold authority.

The crowd parted like the Red Sea.

Daniel's arrogance evaporated. "Uncle Thomas."

Thomas ignored him, gaze settling on me instead. Eyes dark as the ocean, impossible to read.

"This is a charity gala, not your circus." Thomas's voice could've cut glass. "Take your date and leave. Now."

Daniel's jaw clenched. For a moment it looked like he'd argue. Then he shot me a venomous glare, grabbed Jessica's arm, and left.

The crowd dispersed quickly, suddenly fascinated by their champagne.

I stood there, hands smoothing my rumpled collar.

"Thank you, Mr. Blackwood." My voice came out raw.

Thomas stepped closer. He smelled of tobacco and cedar—clean, expensive.

"What you said just now—were you serious?"

I looked up. "About what?"

"Divorce."

I laughed bitterly. "I don't have a choice. Ryan and Mom need—"

"What if money wasn't a problem?"

I froze.

Thomas held my gaze. Something flickered in those cold eyes—something I couldn't name. He leaned in, voice dropping low enough that only I could hear.

"Divorce him. I'll take care of you."
