Synopsis

Ten years ago, he was a monster cast into the shadows. Now, Axel Archer has returned to Whitespire, and he isn’t looking for redemption—he’s looking for blood. In the wake of a devastating explosion, he claims the only thing that can soothe his fractured mind: Piper, the niece who fears him more than death itself.

Dragged into the lawless depths of the Dead Zone, Piper must navigate a world of brutal gangs and psychological warfare. Axel is a predator who views her as his personal stabilizer, but as the lines between captor and protector blur, Piper realizes the only way to survive the beast is to become his obsession. In a city governed by genetic perfection and secret sins, mercy is a luxury they cannot afford.

Chapter1

Thick black smoke billowed from the summit of the Zenith Research Center, clawing at the sky. A jagged hole had been torn into the side of the building, exposing a grisly skeleton of rebar and concrete. Burning debris rained down in a continuous, lethal shower, while the desperate screams of the fleeing crowd mingled with the shrill wail of alarms. High above, a much deeper, more menacing sound began to drown them out.

A low, rhythmic thrumming approached from the clouds.

A helicopter hovered directly over the rising pillars of fire and smoke, its rotors churning through the embers of the explosion. The fuselage was painted in a modified military grey, coated with a specialized film designed to ghost through identification radar.

The side hatch slid open, and a blast of freezing high-altitude wind roared into the cabin.

A man stood at the threshold, one hand braced against the vibrating wall as he looked down at the carnage below. Sunglasses masked his eyes, leaving only the sharp, unyielding line of his jaw visible. His shirt was haphazardly buttoned halfway, and against the backdrop of swirling ash, his broad shoulders and lean waist cut a predatory silhouette.

Below, the burning research center looked like a disturbed anthill. Miniature figures scrambled through the haze, fleeing for their lives in a panic.

Sam Madigan’s voice crackled excitedly through the headset. "Boss! God, that was exhilarating! Those old bastards never dreamed we’d actually blow the Zenith center!"

Axel Archer let out a soft, dismissive snort. "Show some dignity, Sam."

"Heh! I'm just enjoying the moment!" Sam laughed loudly on the other end. "Anyway, mission accomplished. Are we bugging out?"

Axel paused for a heartbeat, his gaze sweeping over the chaos below. "What’s the rush? At the speed those losers move, we’ve got at least ten minutes before they even show up."

As the words left his mouth, his hand moved to his headset, clicking it to mute.

He narrowed his eyes, focusing on a specific spot on the ground.

In the thick of the crowd, a girl was running. She was dressed in a white uniform shirt and a tailored skirt. The shirt was wrinkled and soot-stained, her skirt sat crooked on her hips, and her knees were badly scraped. She looked utterly pathetic, a creature clearly out of its depth.

Big eyes, a delicate nose, a small mouth. She was biting her lip, looking like a fragile flower about to be trampled into the dirt.

It really was her.

Ten years had passed, and the child had certainly filled out. Some things hadn't changed, though—she still looked like she was one second away from bursting into tears.

Axel let out a sharp, cold laugh. "Well, isn't this a pleasant surprise."

He reached out and slapped the hatch door with impatient force. "Take us down!"

"Huh?" The adrenaline in Sam’s voice flatlined instantly, replaced by tension. "Boss! The Iron Hawks will be on us any second. We aren't leaving?"

Axel had already stepped away from the door, moving back into the heart of the cabin. He reached down to adjust the holster strap on his belt with practiced efficiency before snatching a fully automatic rifle from the wall rack.

"I saw something interesting." He slammed a magazine into the weapon with a mechanical click, not looking up. "Fast descent. I'm going in."

Sam didn't ask again. He slammed the controls, and the helicopter tilted, its rotors kicking up a violent downdraft that sent clouds of dust and debris swirling over the screaming crowd.

On the ground, the people scattered. The wind lashed at Piper Archer’s hair, blinding her as the strands whipped across her face. She was running until her lungs burned, her shoes lost somewhere in the rubble long ago. Her knees were raw, and her elbow was a mess of torn skin and blood.

She had only come to the Zenith Research Center to pick up some meeting minutes for her professor. She never expected the world to explode the moment she stepped inside.

The air pressure above her suddenly intensified. Something massive was descending. A mid-sized helicopter was hovering low, its shadow swallowing her whole.

A primal sense of danger surged through her. She tried to force her legs to move faster, but the gale-force wind from the rotors slammed into her. Her foot caught on a piece of jagged debris, and she lost her balance, crashing hard into a pile of rubble.

Sharp stones bit into her palms and knees. The pain was so sharp it turned her vision black for a moment.

She struggled to push herself up, but her limbs were heavy, trembling from exhaustion and shock.

A second later, a black combat boot stepped into her field of vision.

She hesitated, then slowly looked up. A man was standing in the wind, looming over her.

He wore a shirt unbuttoned to his chest, his broad shoulders filling out the fabric with a sense of raw power. His sleeves were rolled up, revealing the corded muscle of his forearms. He held a rifle in his left hand, the barrel pointed toward the earth, his finger resting casually near the trigger guard.

Dark sunglasses hid his expression, but the sheer, mountain-like pressure of his presence was suffocating.

Piper’s eyes widened. A chilling sensation crawled up the back of her neck. She tried to deny the thought—no, it was impossible...

Axel Archer looked down at her. His gaze traveled from her messy hair to her trembling shoulders, finally settling on her tightly pressed legs and ruined knees.

He slowly slid his sunglasses off. "You've certainly grown up, little niece. What’s the matter? Scared silent? Don’t you recognize me?"

In the sunlight, his face was fully exposed. His features were deep and sharp, with a prominent brow and a high bridge to his nose. A trace of a casual, mocking smile played on his lips.

But his eyes... they were cold, detached, as if devoid of any human emotion.

Piper’s pupils shrank. Her heart felt like it had stopped dead in her chest.

It really was him!

In an instant, she was eight years old again. He had been adopted into the family, a teenager with eyes like a stalking leopard—wild and untamable. She used to hide behind her mother, whispering, "Hello, Uncle."

She hadn't understood anything back then, yet she had feared him instinctively. There was no logic to it; she just felt that something terrible was hidden in the way he looked at her. She had spent her childhood avoiding him, her skin crawling at the mere sound of his footsteps. The terror seemed to be etched into her very marrow.

And then came that midnight. He had slipped into her room, silent as a predator, and clamped his hand around her throat without a single word. His fingers had been like ice, squeezing until her windpipe groaned. She had thrashed, clawing at his wrists, but he hadn't budged an inch. She had tried to scream, but no sound would come.

The memory of that suffocating, shivering horror flooded back with agonizing clarity. She had thought she would never see him again.

But now, that bone-deep fear was back. And this time, it was even stronger.

Piper’s hands and feet went numb. She pushed against the ground, dragging herself backward inch by inch. "You... you... what are you doing here?"

He was supposed to be gone! He had been exiled to the Dead Zone for attempted murder! Everyone said the Dead Zone was for the most vicious monsters, a place no one ever returned from.

Why was he standing in front of her now?

Axel took a step toward her. Even with a rifle in his hand and the scent of gunpowder clinging to his clothes, he moved with the relaxed ease of someone taking a stroll in a park.

"Is that any way to greet your elder? No 'hello'? Is this how your parents raised you? No manners at all."

As he spoke, the rifle dangled loosely from his fingers, swaying with each step.

Piper turned deathly pale, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "I... I'm... I'm sorry... I..."

She was terrified. He was taller than he had been ten years ago, and the aura surrounding him was suffocating. That gun could end her life in a heartbeat.

Was he here to kill her? He was definitely going to kill her.

At the thought, tears began to stream down her face, blurring her vision. She pleaded through her sobs, her voice a fragile rasp. "Please don't kill me... please... I beg you..."

Axel stared down at her, his gaze lingering for several long seconds.

She was terrified, curled into a small, trembling ball. Her eyes were red like a cornered rabbit’s, and her voice was broken by her fear.

A strange sensation bubbled up from within—satisfaction. No, it was pure, unadulterated pleasure.

He blinked, realized that the volatile storm that usually raged in his mind had suddenly stilled. He didn't have to force his rage down; it had simply retreated, sinking into a dormant slumber.

His eyes narrowed, a flicker of dark intrigue dancing in the depths. Why had he ever thought of killing her? A little plaything like this... she shouldn't be discarded. She should be kept. Kept until she was broken, kept so she could never run away again.

His lips curled into a slow, dark smile, like a long-dormant evil finally finding its purpose.

He pressed the cold, black muzzle of the rifle against the soft skin of her neck. His voice dropped, low and hard.

"Come with me, or I put a bullet in you. Your choice."
