Months turned
Synopsis
Bound by Jade and Chaos
Chapter1
The ashes of the Sunshot Campaign had barely settled, but the cultivation world was already choking on the smoke of its new politics. The fall of the Qishan Wen Sect had left a vacuum, and into it rushed the ambitions of the victorious clans. At the forefront, burnished in gold and ambition, was the Lanling Jin Sect, its influence spreading like a gilded plague.
In the quiet, rain-slicked courtyards of Lotus Pier, Wei Wuxian heard the news not as a political decree, but as a punchline to a joke he wasn't in on.
“A marriage alliance?” he repeated, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. He looked from his brother, the stern-faced and newly-instated Sect Leader Jiang Cheng, to the formal missive spread on the table between them. “With the Gusu Lan Sect?”
“It is no laughing matter,” Jiang Cheng snapped, his hand resting on the hilt of Sandu. “Lan Qiren himself proposed it. An unbreakable bond between our two sects, to stabilize the realm and keep the Jin from overreaching.”
“An unbreakable bond,” Wei Wuxian echoed, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across his face. “And to forge this bond, they want to shackle their most prized jewel to… me?” He laughed, a loud, unrestrained sound that was utterly out of place in the tense atmosphere. “They want to marry Hanguang-Jun to the Yiling Patriarch? The grandmaster of demonic cultivation? Have they all lost their minds?”
Jiang Cheng’s expression was grim. “They believe it will… tame you. That the righteousness of the Gusu Lan Sect will temper your unconventional methods.”
“Tame me?” The laughter died in Wei Wuxian’s throat, replaced by a cold glint in his eyes. “They think of me as a beast to be caged.”
He wasn't wrong.
Hundreds of li away, in the pristine silence of the Cloud Recesses, Lan Wangji knelt before his uncle, Lan Qiren. The air in the Yashi was heavy with the scent of sandalwood and disapproval.
“This is for the good of the world, Wangji,” Lan Qiren stated, his voice as unyielding as the mountains surrounding them. “The cultivation world needs a united front. The Yunmeng Jiang Sect is powerful, but their alliance with Wei Wuxian makes them a volatile element. This union will secure them. And it will place him under our sect’s guidance.”
Under your watch, Lan Wangji thought, his hands clenching almost imperceptibly at his sides.
“He is irreverent,” Lan Wangji said, his voice a low, cool murmur. It was the only protest he allowed himself.
“He will learn discipline,” Lan Qiren retorted, his gaze sharp. “And you, Wangji, will teach him. It is your duty.”
Lan Wangji did not argue further. He simply bowed his head, the picture of filial obedience. But inside, a storm raged. Wei Wuxian. The boy with a smile as bright and lawless as summer lightning. The man who had walked a path of ghosts and shadows, who had defied every rule Lan Wangji had ever cherished. To be bound to him was not a duty; it was a torment.
Their first meeting as fiancés was in that same Elegant Room. Wei Wuxian arrived dressed in his customary black and red, his flute, Chenqing, tucked into his belt. He sauntered in, a stark slash of chaos against the serene, orderly lines of the Gusu architecture.
Lan Wangji was already there, kneeling primly behind a low table, his guqin before him. He did not look up.
“Ah, Lan Zhan!” Wei Wuxian’s voice was a cheerful intrusion into the heavy silence. “Or should I start calling you my husband-to-be? It has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?” He walked around the table, his steps deliberately loud, circling Lan Wangji like a patient predator.
Lan Wangji’s fingers tightened on the strings of his guqin. “Preposterous.”
“Oh, is it?” Wei Wuxian stopped directly in front of him, leaning down until their faces were mere inches apart. He smelled of lotus and something wild, like wind and open water. “I think it’s a brilliant idea. Imagine the chaos we could cause together. The righteous Hanguang-Jun and the wicked Yiling Patriarch. We’d be the talk of the cultivation world for centuries.”
He was teasing, prodding, searching for a crack in that jade-like composure.
Lan Wangji finally lifted his head. His golden eyes, usually so calm and distant, were burning with a cold fire. “Do not mock this.”
“I’m not mocking,” Wei Wuxian said, his smile sharpening. “I’m celebrating. This is the beginning of a beautiful… arrangement, isn’t it?” He reached out, his finger tracing the cloud-patterned ribbon on Lan Wangji’s forehead.
Lan Wangji flinched as if struck. “Do not touch,” he bit out, his voice dangerously low.
Wei Wuxian’s hand froze. He saw the genuine fury in those golden depths and, for the first time, the full weight of the situation seemed to land on him. This was not a game. This was a cage, and they were both trapped inside it.
He slowly pulled his hand back, the playful smile finally vanishing from his lips. “Fine, Lan Zhan. We’ll play by your rules. For now.”
He sat down opposite Lan Wangji, the space between them suddenly vast and cold. The silence that fell was no longer serene. It was the suffocating quiet of a battlefield before the first clash of steel.
