Chapter1
The full moon’s light bathed the sacred grounds of Shadowcrown, gilding the ancient stone circle and the reveling wolves in silver. Bonfires crackled, the scent of roasting meat mixed with laughter, and the air hummed with celebration. Elara stood at the edge of the crowd, an untouched cup of mead in her hand, wearing the practiced, proper smile she had perfected countless times. She nodded to passing pack members, but her gaze, as if drawn by invisible strings, kept drifting uncontrollably toward the center of the festivities.
There stood Damian. Her Damian. No, no longer hers. He was tall and upright, wearing the dark green ceremonial garb of the future Alpha, a silver wolf pelt draped over his shoulders, heartbreakingly handsome. And beside him stood Seraphina. The moonlight seemed to favor her alone: silver‑white hair, ice‑blue eyes, and the ancient moonstone necklace around her neck, symbol of the “fated mate,” gleaming faintly. She held Damian’s arm, her posture elegant, accepting the flood of congratulations and praise from elders and pack members alike.
“Elara, are you all right?” Her friend Maya touched her arm, voice low with concern.
“I’m fine.” Elara heard her own calm voice, even managed a slight smile. “The celebration is lively, isn’t it?” She forced herself to look away, toward the leaping bonfire, but her fingernails dug deep into the handle of her cup, nearly crushing it. Her heart ached with emptiness. Only a few months ago, she had been the one standing beside Damian, receiving blessings. They had run together under the moonlight, and he had promised to find a way… until the bloodline test results came, until Seraphina returned with undeniable proof of the “fated bond.”
“Elara?” A soft voice spoke beside her.
Elara stiffened almost imperceptibly and turned. Seraphina had walked over, alone. Her face wore an impeccable, sympathetic, understanding smile. “Could I speak with you for a moment? Just a word.” She gestured toward the shadows of the ancient trees at the edge of the sacred grounds.
Elara wanted to refuse, but under the eyes of so many, she could not be rude. She nodded, set down her cup, and followed Seraphina toward the boundary between light and shadow. The noise of the celebration faded behind them; the air grew suddenly cold and still.
“I’m sorry,” Seraphina said, stopping and turning to face her. Moonlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on her perfect smile, making it seem somehow unpredictable. “I know this is hard for you to accept. Damian and I… we didn’t expect this either. The fated bond is irresistible. I hope you understand.”
Elara looked at her, her throat tight. Understand? Understand that you are the perfect match, and I am the one left over?
“Of course,” Elara heard her own dry voice say. “The guidance of blood is paramount. I wish you happiness.” Every word scraped her throat like gravel.
Seraphina stepped closer, uncomfortably near. Her ice‑blue eyes bored into Elara’s, the usual gentleness gone, replaced by cold scrutiny and a flicker of barely hidden malice. “You are a strong girl, Elara. You’ll find your own path. After all,” her voice dropped lower, like a serpent’s hiss, “that little… interlude between you and Damian was never meant to happen. Mixed blood only taints the noble heritage of Shadowcrown. You, and that inconvenient weakness in him, are both… impurities that should be cleansed.”
The moment the last word fell, Elara’s mind seemed to explode with a silent scream—not physical pain, but something that stabbed directly into her soul, churning and tearing! Her wolf spirit, Lyra, the proud, sensitive half of her being, let out a soundless, furious roar of agony and rage.
It was a spiritual attack! A rare, insidious technique aimed directly at a wolf’s essence.
“Ah—!” Elara clutched her head, stumbling backward, her vision darkening. A faint, unfamiliar flutter stirred in her belly, mingling with Lyra’s overwhelming fury and protectiveness.
“What’s wrong, Elara?” Seraphina’s voice rose sharply, filled with “alarm” and “concern,” jarring in the sudden silence of the trees. But her eyes, in Elara’s pain‑blurred vision, gleamed with cold, satisfied triumph.
No! Not here! Lyra, be still!
But it was too late. Lyra, enraged by the violation of her territory, the malicious provocation, and the threat to her host (and that mysterious new life within), surged past Elara’s crumbling defenses and seized control.
“ROAR—!!”
A low growl, inhuman, wild, and murderous, burst from Elara’s throat. Her eyes flashed to luminous gold in the moonlight; her fingers twisted and lengthened, their tips gleaming with sharp claws.
As Seraphina fell backward with a perfectly timed cry of shock, Lyra‑controlled Elara lunged like a hunting panther.
Shlik—
The sound of claws tearing flesh was horrifyingly clear against the suddenly silent celebration.
Time seemed to freeze.
Elara’s vision cleared. Lyra’s rage receded like a tide, leaving cold emptiness and a pounding headache. She stared blankly at her right hand; her claws were slowly retracting, smeared with fresh, warm, shocking red. Slowly, stiffly, she turned her head.
Seraphina sat on the ground a few steps away, clutching her left cheek. Blood welled between her fingers. Three deep, bone‑deep gashes ran from her cheekbone to her jaw. She looked up, ice‑blue eyes filled with “pain” and “disbelief,” her body trembling with “fear”—the perfect portrait of an innocent victim.
“No… I didn’t… she started it…” Elara’s voice came out hoarse, broken. But her protests were drowned by the sudden eruption of shouts, gasps, and angry cries.
“Elara attacked Lady Seraphina!”
“Has she gone mad?!”
“Protect the Fated Moon!”
Several guards from Seraphina’s family rushed forward, roughly pinning the still‑dazed Elara’s arms behind her back and forcing her to her knees on the cold stone. The impact sent a shock of pain through her knees.
“Damian! Help me!” Seraphina let out a blood‑curdling cry of despair, tears mingling with blood, beautiful and fragile.
Damian pushed through the crowd, striding forward. His face, in the mingled firelight and moonlight, was terrifyingly pale. He looked first at Seraphina, her face bloodied and pitiful, then at Elara, pinned to the ground, looking up at him with confusion, terror, and a flicker of desperate hope. His gaze paused for a moment on her blood‑stained fingers. Something violent seemed to churn in the depths of his gray eyes, but in the end, it all solidified into cold, hard ice.
He did not go to Elara. He walked to Seraphina, took off his cloak, wrapped it carefully around her, and murmured soothing words. Then he straightened and faced the pack, facing Elara, still kneeling on the judgment stone.
“Elara,” he said, his voice no longer the warm, low tone she remembered, but the cold, commanding authority of the future Alpha, “in the full moonlight of the celebration, you attacked the high‑born Fated Moon, Seraphina, in your wolf form. The evidence is clear, witnessed by all.”
“Damian, it’s not true! She provoked Lyra with a spiritual attack! She—” Elara struggled, tears finally breaking free.
“Silence!” An elder from Seraphina’s family cut her off harshly, pointing accusingly. “Vile lies! The Fated Moon possesses the purest gift of the Moon Goddess. How could she use such foul means? It is you, corrupted by jealousy and resentment, unable to control your base blood and wolf spirit, who committed this evil!”
Damian closed his eyes. When he opened them, the last trace of emotion was gone. He raised his right hand, bearing the signet ring of the heir, and his voice rang clearly across the silent sacred grounds:
“I, Damian, heir to Shadowcrown, in the name of the Moon Goddess and our ancestors, hereby judge: Elara, guilty of attacking a packmate and attempting to harm the Fated Mate. You are stripped of all rank, status, and name within the pack, your existence erased. Your sentence—permanent exile!”
He paused, his gaze finally falling on Elara’s face, now drained of all color. His final words fell like hammer blows sealing her coffin:
“You are expelled immediately, never to set foot on Shadowcrown territory again. On pain of death, by any pack member, at any time.”
“No… Damian… please…” Elara’s plea died in her throat. Guards stepped forward, roughly tearing the fang necklace from her neck and ripping the family crest from her sleeve. Each action was like a slash at her remaining dignity and her last ties to this land.
She was dragged to her feet and shoved toward the border, outside the sacred grounds. She looked back one last time, her gaze fixed on the man standing by the bonfire, arm around Seraphina, his profile cold as a statue.
He did not look at her. Not once.
The moonlight remained bright. The sounds of celebration faded behind her, growing indistinct. Only the heavy footsteps of the guards and the mournful sigh of the night wind over the wasteland accompanied Elara on her dark, exiled path. Behind her was the man she had once loved, and a home she could never return to.
