London Plague Zone
Synopsis
When "Crimson Dust," a bio-weapon capable of silent, planet-wide extinction, is unleashed, the galaxy believes it is a prelude to war. But the truth is far more terrifying: Viktor Hale, a phantom tyrant long thought dead, has returned from the shadows to reclaim his empire, with Earth as his first target.
Humanity's last hope rests on the shoulders of a band of outcasts: Drew Callahan, a disgraced ex-special agent haunted by his past; Miles Hawthorne, a detective chasing ghosts through interstellar back-alleys; and a crew of soldiers whose only honor was forged in fire.
Forced to unite, they must race against time across a war-torn galaxy, hunting for a mythical alien blade—the one weapon that can turn the tide. But as they navigate epic space battles and treacherous conspiracies, they discover the greatest threat isn't the armada darkening their sky, but the traitors hiding in plain sight.
With the fate of billions hanging by a thread, can these broken heroes stop an apocalypse they may have helped create?
Chapter1
The corridor outside Blackridge Core smelled of ozone and scorched coolant. Blake Mercer knelt, matte-black plating whispering as he unclipped a fist-sized focus-bomb from his belt. A single amber diode blinked, counting down from sixty. He pressed the device against the first reactor housing; magnets snapped shut with a metallic kiss. Two more followed in perfect rhythm—click, click—each thump echoing inside his chest like a second heartbeat.
The shuttle waited on the frost-slick pad, engines already humming. Blake vaulted the rail, punched the lift switch, and felt gravity tilt as the craft clawed into Ironvale’s pre-dawn sky. Through the windscreen, the Core’s floodlights dwindled to a pearl necklace around the valley’s throat. He toggled the comm. Selene Outpost, this is Raven-One. Package delivered.”
Static crackled, then a calm baritone: Copy, Raven-One. Standing by for confirmation.”
Inside Selene’s observation blister, Gideon Voss stood beneath a dome of starlight, coat collar turned up against recycled air that always felt ten degrees too cold. The door hissed; Blake stepped in, helmet tucked under one arm, cheeks still ruddy from adrenaline.
How’d it go, Blake Mercer?” Gideon asked, though the twitch at the corner of his mouth suggested he already knew.
Clean,” Blake answered, peeling off his gloves. By now Ironvale should be in full panic.”
Gideon’s reflection ghosted across the viewport glass, superimposed on the moon’s silver arc. Right. If the radiation vents, the strain inside Aegis Biodyne mutates.”
Blake’s brow furrowed. Which strain, Gideon Voss?”
.” The name tasted bitter; Gideon almost spat it. Russia’s the capital ever since they engineered the first Martian colonists. Pity the Dark Lord can’t be here to watch Earth kneel.”
Out past the Raven’s Rim, biding time.” Blake shouldered his pack. I’m wheels-up.”
See you,” Gideon said, but the door had already sighed shut.
Three hundred thousand kilometers sunward, dawn was smudging the Atlantic copper. Drew Callahan lay sprawled across a couch that cost more than most citizens earned in a year, one arm dangling, fingers brushing discarded data-pads. His phone vibrated on the glass table, skittering like a trapped moth. He groped for it, knuckles cracking.
Yeah?” His voice rasped, unused.
Drew Callahan, it’s Miles Hawthorne. Code-red. My loft. Now.”
Drew sat up too fast; the room tilted. On my way.” He killed the call, scratched at stubble, and muttered to empty air, What’s his damage? I clocked three hours’ sleep.”
The phone jumped again, screen blazing: Move!
He swore, grabbed yesterday’s jacket, and bolted.
Ashford District at six a.m. smelled of wet asphalt and burnt sugar from the bakery vents. Pedestrian traffic was still thin—delivery drones, night-shift stragglers, a lone street sweeper humming Brahms. Drew shoved through the revolving door of The Silver Gull, a twenty-four-hour café that fancied itself a speakeasy for the ultra-rich. Brass fans turned overhead; neon fish floated across the walls in slow, pixelated schools.
Miles Hawthorne occupied a corner booth, blazer immaculate despite the hour. He lifted two fingers; the barista nodded.
First, coffee,” Miles declared. He flagged the barista again. Two breakfast burritos and a flat-white.”
Drew dropped into the opposite seat. Make mine a double-burger. Spill it.”
Miles waited until the barista vanished, then slid a thick kraft envelope across the marble tabletop. His voice dropped to a whisper barely louder than steam. They ID the bomber?”
Drew’s pulse stumbled. He palmed the envelope; it felt warm, as though it carried fever. You woke me for gossip?”
Not gossip.” Miles leaned in. Blackridge Core’s fail-safes held—barely. Radiation count spiked, then plateaued. Aegis Biodyne’s samples are already showing aberrant motility. If the containment cracks—”
Yeah, I read the doomsday brochures.” Drew’s thumb worried the envelope’s seam. Who’s they’?”
Miles’s eyes were bloodshot but sharp. Internal security cams caught a ghost. No face, no tags, but the gait signature matches a contractor who vanished after the Europa incident. Same playbook: focused charges, remote trigger, exit via maintenance shuttle.”
Drew exhaled through his teeth. Mercer.”
Miles tilted his head. You know him?”
We trained together in the Crimson Legion. He was… precise. Never wasted a motion or a second.” Drew’s gaze drifted to the window, where hover-cars were beginning to stitch gold trails across the sky. If Blake’s back, someone’s paying premium.”
The barista returned, sliding plates between them. Miles waited until she left, then nudged the envelope. Inside: schematics of the Raven’s Rim freight lane, encrypted manifests, and a biometric key. Someone funneled two million credits through three shell corps yesterday. Destination: a derelict refinery orbiting beyond Rim jurisdiction.”
Drew flipped the envelope open. A holo-slide projected above the paper: star-chart, vector lines, a red X pulsing like a heartbeat. He killed the projection. You want me to chase him?”
I want you to survive,” Miles said quietly. If goes airborne, Kingshaven locks down. No in, no out. Thirty-six hours, tops.”
Drew bit into the burger; it tasted of nothing. Why me?”
Because you’re the only one who ever walked away from Mercer’s squad alive.” Miles sipped his coffee, eyes never leaving Drew’s face. And because if the trail dies, Earth dies with it.”
Drew wiped his fingers, folded the envelope into an inside pocket. I’ll need a ship. Nova-grade med-pack. And a clean uplink to Selene.”
Miles smiled, thin and tired. Already booked. Dock Nine, slip forty-four. Departure window: ninety minutes.” He produced a platinum chip, slid it beside the burrito. Coded to your DNA. Don’t lose it.”
Drew stood, joints protesting. If I find him—”
Don’t confront him alone,” Miles cut in. Tag, track, transmit. Let the Liberty Pact handle extraction.”
Drew snorted. You still believe in white-knight cavalry?”
I believe in arithmetic,” Miles answered. One man can’t stop an apocalypse.”
Drew turned to leave, then paused. You said the Dust is already moving. What if containment fails before I reach Rim?”
Miles’s expression flattened. Then you come home, kiss your sister goodbye, and watch the sky burn.”
Outside, the city’s dawn chorus of engines rose. Drew stepped into the street, coat flapping like a torn flag, envelope heavy against his ribs. Somewhere beyond the cloud layer, Blake Mercer was racing nightward, carrying extinction in his wake. Drew felt the old chill settle between his shoulder blades—the taste of vacuum, the hush before a breach. He started walking, faster, then running, pockets jingling with keys to a future that might already be obsolete.
Nope. Every camera fried, zero prints—pro job.”
Agent Sloane Drake’s voice crackled through the encrypted earpiece clipped to Detective Mara Quinn’s collar.
Mara answered without looking up from the alley’s oil-slick pavement. Is the U.S. safe?”
For now. The device was planted in Ironvale’s Blackridge Core—ground-zero for research.”
The words felt like dry ice against Mara’s spine. She exhaled slowly, watched her breath curl in the night air. Then we need Dr. Evelyn Cross.”
Who?”
Strandford University immunologist, first to isolate on Mars. Just back on leave.”
Sloane’s pause was almost a prayer. Copy. Coordinates?”
Innovation Alley. Hacker bazaar. Bring aspirin.”
Innovation Alley used to be a warehouse district; now it was a migraine of neon code and black-market dreams. Mara stepped over a grad-student passed out beside a drone-taxi, his retinal HUD still flickering half-formed cheat scripts. She palmed the grip of her sidearm, counting exits the way other people counted rosary beads.
Watch your six—every merc and grad-student hustles here,” Sloane muttered, materializing at her shoulder in a charcoal trench that smelled of rain and gun oil.
A steel door hissed open ahead of schedule. Steam rolled out, carrying the coppery scent of ozone and cheap synth-coffee.
Detective Mara Quinn, Agent Sloane Drake, punctual as ever.”
The speaker stood half-shadowed under a humming sodium lamp: Dr. Evelyn Cross, mid-fifties, lab coat over faded jeans, sneakers speckled with something that might have been Martian ochre or cafeteria gravy. Her eyes were bloodshot but bright, the eyes of someone who’d seen extinction through a microscope and laughed anyway.
She didn’t offer a hand. Skip the pleasantries. You heard the reactor breach?”
Radiation spike plus equals nightmare,” Mara replied. Bug’s only five years old—no antiserum in the pipeline.”
Symptoms?” Sloane asked.
Cross ticked them off on gloved fingers. Total rigor, brain-dead in twenty-four hours, one-hundred-percent lethal. No survivors on the Martian test cohort, no survivors in the Ironvale macaques. It’s a city-killer wearing a virus costume.”
Mara swallowed. Can we quarantine?”
Unlikely. It’s a super-bug. Humanity’s odds? Flip a coin.” Cross produced a data-rod the size of a lipstick, rolled it across her knuckles. Suspects?”
Last night—”
A ruby laser lanced the darkness. A uniformed guard twenty meters away spasmed, dropped, a smoking hole through his tactical vest. Screams ricocheted off corrugated walls.
Back off!” The shout carried electronic amplification, crisp, amused.
Blake Mercer Rex strode into the strobing light, ion-carbine humming like a beehive fed on uranium. His coat was stitched from matte-black ballistic mesh, collar high enough to hide the scar that rumor said went clean through his larynx. Four mercenaries fanned behind him, optics glowing emerald.
Blake Mercer Rex, lieutenant of Viktor Hale,” Sloane murmured, hand inside her jacket. Thought Hale’s empire imploded five years ago.”
Empires collapse,” Rex said, voice metallic through his mask. Shares rebound. Tonight you three are my commodity.”
Mara’s pulse drummed against her eardrums. She measured angles: Rex blocked their retreat to the main street; his men sealed the alley mouth ahead. Cross stood between them like a chess queen nobody had bothered to castle.
Rex tilted the carbine. Dr. Cross, you’ll bring the immuno-shield data. Detectives, you’ll bring yourselves. Walk.”
Cross didn’t flinch. Shoot me and your buyer gets nothing.”
Shoot you and I still have two bargaining chips.” Rex’s gaze flicked to Mara, Sloane. Walk, or I start trimming.”
Sloane’s fingers tightened on whatever weapon she wasn’t yet allowed to draw. We’re law enforcement, Rex. Touch us, every badge on the continent hunts you.”
Law enforcement?” Rex chuckled, a sound like gravel in a blender. Agent Drake, your badge is a souvenir once hits the jet stream. Now move.”
Mara’s options collapsed to a single reckless thread. She palmed the flash-bomb disguised as a coat button, caught Sloane’s eye, tilted two fingers: countdown. Sloane blinked once: understood.
Cross, oblivious, stepped forward. I’ll go. Let them leave.”
Nobility?” Rex mocked. Wrong genre, Doctor.”
He reached.
Mara ripped the button free, slammed it to the ground. White phosphorus light detonated, silent but blinding. Her vision whited out; she grabbed Cross by the collar and sprinted toward a side passage she’d mapped earlier. Sloane’s boots pounded beside her.
Behind, Rex roared, curse lost in the after-flash. Ion-carbine whined, discharged; molten concrete spat where they’d stood.
The side passage was a maintenance shaft barely shoulder-wide. Mara shoved Cross inside, wedged after her. Sloane followed, slammed the hatch, shot the mag-lock. It wouldn’t hold long.
Darkness swallowed them, broken only by crimson exit strips. Cross wheezed, You just signed their death warrant.”
Better than collecting it ourselves,” Mara shot back. She yanked the data-rod from Cross’s pocket—when had she lifted it?—and jammed it into her wrist-reader. Files blossomed: genome maps, infection timelines, something labeled COIN-TOSS.
Sloane scanned over her shoulder. That the cure?”
No,” Cross whispered. That’s the failsafe. If we can’t contain , COIN-TOSS burns the planet’s atmosphere with tailored solar flares. Sterilization by fire.”
Footsteps echoed beyond the hatch. Metal groaned.
Mara’s mouth tasted of copper. Options?”
Cross straightened, eyes fierce. One lab in Strandford still has live cultures. We synthesize an antiserum, we distribute via orbital aerosol before the bug reaches jet-stream. But we need Viktor Hale’s private jump-rig. Only thing fast enough.”
Hale’s dead,” Sloane said.
Empires collapse,” Cross echoed Rex, shares rebound. Hale’s ghost still owns a rift-platform at Coral Bay. Off-grid. If Rex wants me, he’ll chase. So we let him.”
Mara stared at the schematics glowing on her wrist. A suicidal feint through a dead crime-lord’s playground to save a world already flipping its coin.
The hatch shrieked, first screw popping.
Mara ejected the rod, slapped it into Cross’s palm. Then we run toward the ghost.”
She pulled her sidearm, thumbed off safety. Sloane mirrored her.
Door won’t hold,” Sloane said.
Doesn’t need to,” Mara answered. Just long enough for Rex to think we’re still running scared.”
She aimed at the hatch hinge, squeezed twice. Sparks spat; metal warped, jamming the slide. Rex’s men would need plasma torches to cut through now.
Cross managed a thin smile. Detective, you’ve got criminal instincts.”
Occupational hazard.” Mara grabbed Cross’s elbow, started down the shaft. Let’s go steal a dead man’s sky-ride.”
Behind them, Rex’s muffled curse echoed, frustrated for the moment. Ahead, only blackness and the ticking of an invisible clock counting down to either cure or cremation.
Mara’s boots splashed through stagnant water, each step a promise: the world would get its coin toss, but she’d weight the flip with every ounce of stubborn left in her blood.
Blake Mercer’s laugh ricocheted off the curved steel walls of the abandoned observation deck, a bright, brittle sound that made the broken skylight hum.
We’ve been rebuilding,” he said, flicking ash from his cuff. Viktor Hale’s alive—teleported out seconds before you killed’ him. You never even checked the body.”
Liam Calder’s breath snagged halfway down his throat; the noise he made was half gasp, half swallowed curse. Beside him, Miles Hawthorne’s eyes widened until the irises looked rimmed with white fire.
Blake spread his arms, inviting them to admire the perfection of the lie.
While you drank and sang, we seeded the real bomb inside Blackridge Core. That space-station decoy you chased? A firework. Now you know too much.” He snapped his fingers. Grab them.”
Two silhouettes detached from the shadows, visors ink-black, gauntlets already sparking with restraining foam.
Blake tipped an imaginary hat.
Good-bye, gentlemen.”
A white flash swallowed the room—soundless, odorless, but bright enough to print the veins inside Liam’s eyelids.
Then came the fall.
No air, no light, only a tunnel that felt like being crushed through a straw. Atoms peeled away, reassembled, tore apart again. Wind screamed without moving; his stomach tried to crawl up his ribs. Time fractured into strobe-lit shards.
Ugh—where—?” The words tumbled out as gravity suddenly returned and his knees slammed into damp flagstones.
A hand gripped his elbow, steady as iron.
Welcome to Kingshaven,” Miles said, voice rough but alive.
Liam blinked. They stood in a narrow alley between leaning brick walls, sodium lamps painting everything arterial orange. The air smelled of river silt and fried onions. Somewhere above, a clocktower struck two.
Quantum jump-pad,” Miles explained, already dragging him toward the street. Rift-platform relocates you atom-by-atom. No contamination here—yet.”
Liam tested his legs, surprised they still fit together. Next move?”
We stop Blake Mercer. First, sleep. It’s 2 a.m.; I’ve got Nolan Pierce on pickup.”
Headlights swung around the corner, tires shrieking like gulls. A matte-black SUV slid to the curb; the rear door popped before the vehicle fully stopped.
Climb in. You tired? I can drive,” Miles offered.
Liam collapsed into the leather seat, pulse still vibrating in his ears. The city outside the windows looked like every other pre-dawn metropolis—closed flower stalls, neon beer signs flickering off, a drunk pissing against a poster for a concert that already happened. Only the license plates were unfamiliar: cobalt letters on reflective white, no country flag.
They crossed Eagle Delta bridge, water black and glossy beneath, and slipped into Riverside Walk. The safe-house occupied the second floor of a converted tea warehouse; ivy strangled the brick, and the entry code was an old brass knocker shaped like an anchor.
Inside, the air smelled of cedar and dust. Miles flicked on one lamp, throwing long shadows across stacked crates labeled FISHMEAL.
I’ve crashed here awhile—mi casa. Still got the red Zodiac inflatable?”
Liam nodded toward a tarp in the corner. Yep.”
Kill time; our body clocks think it’s Brightspire Isle dawn. I’m crashing—fridge is yours.” Miles yawned like a lion, kicked off his boots, and face-planted onto the nearest couch, asleep before impact.
Liam stood in the middle of the room, suddenly aware of every ache. He found the kitchenette, drank milk straight from the carton, then palmed the holo-pad lying on the counter. The screen unfolded like a paper flower, projecting headlines above his wrist.

UNCONFIRMED REPORTS OF ” DEVICE
He scrolled until a sidebar caught his eye:

Remember Blake Mercer’s hint?” Liam murmured, though Miles was snoring. Brightspire Isle could be next.”
A grunt from the couch. Miles hadn’t moved, but his voice carried.
We share blame?”
Negative.” Liam rubbed the bridge of his nose. Even if we hadn’t blown the failsafe, they’d have triggered it. Timing’s coincidence.”
Miles sat up, hair wild, eyes bloodshot but sharp.
Only play left: Mars. vaults and immuno-shield archives are up there.”
Then we move before Blake Mercer does.”
Outside, the first pale edge of dawn crept over the river, turning the water the color of old steel. Somewhere in the distance, a cargo barge sounded its horn—one long, mournful note that felt like a warning and a starting gun at the same time.
