Chapter1
The first sign of the storm isn’t the bruised purple sky over Lake Michigan. It’s the silence. A heavy, expectant quiet that chokes the city’s endless noise. A held breath before the thunder cracks.
I feel that silence now, in the grand ballroom of the InterContinental. It’s a tomb, and I’m watching my own funeral. My father, Don Marco “The Mason” Costello, a man who builds empires with bone and breaks men with a word, is shaking hands with the devil. Lucio Falcone.
A peace negotiation. A lie so beautiful it almost makes me laugh. For twenty years, our families have painted the streets of this city red. Tonight is supposed to be the end.
My eyes aren't on the two kings of Chicago’s underworld. They're on her.
Bianca Falcone. The Ghost. My ghost.
She stands behind her father, a vision in white silk, her moonlight hair a stark contrast to the room's suffocating opulence. Her eyes, the color of a summer sky just before dawn, find mine across the sea of tailored suits and simmering hatred. A small, hesitant smile touches her lips.
It’s a promise. A fragile, insane, beautiful promise of a future where our names don’t matter. My heart, that stupid, traitorous organ, aches with a hope I have no right to feel.
The silence breaks.
Thump-thump-thump.
The soft, wet cough of silenced automatic weapons. Chaos erupts. The symphony begins.
Crystal chandeliers shatter, raining down glass diamonds. Men I’ve known my whole life, men who taught me how to tie a tie and how to break a finger, fall in crimson sprays. I see Lucio Falcone’s eyes widen in surprise, a red flower blooming on the crisp white of his shirt.
Betrayal. Costello soldiers are cutting down other Costello soldiers.
My first instinct isn't to fight. It's her. Bianca.
I move, shoving through the screaming, dying crowd. I see her, her white dress now a canvas for her father’s blood, her face a mask of pure, uncomprehending terror.
"Bianca!" I shout, reaching for her.
Our fingers are inches from touching when a new wave of men bursts through the doors. They wear no colors, no family crests. They’re wraiths in black combat gear, their movements brutally efficient. One of them grabs her.
She screams my name. Her voice is a raw, tearing sound that rips through my soul, the only thing I can hear over the gunfire and my own frantic heartbeat.
"Nino!"
I lunge. Too late.
The butt of a rifle connects with the side of my head. The world dissolves into a searing flash of white.
I wake to the cold, hard kiss of a gun barrel against my temple. My father stands over me, his face a mask of stone, his eyes chips of ice. The ballroom is a silent tomb now, filled with the ghosts of men who were alive an hour ago.
"You are weak," he says, his voice a low, emotionless rumble. "Your affection for the Falcone girl made you blind. Your hesitation cost us men."
"It was a setup," I choke out, the words tasting of blood and cordite. "Our own men—"
"I know," he cuts me off. "It has been dealt with. But the other families are spooked. They smell blood in the water. They need to see a show of strength. They need to see that the Costellos are not weak." He presses the barrel harder against my skull. "And you, my son, are my weakness."
He doesn't pull the trigger. Death would be a mercy. This is far crueler.
"You are exiled," he says, the words a final, brutal judgment. "You are no longer a Costello. If I see your face in this city again, I will kill you myself. This is my only act of mercy. Now, get out of my sight."
He turns and walks away, leaving me in a room full of ghosts, the most painful one being the ghost of a girl with eyes the color of dawn.
I stumble out of that hotel, a prince stripped of his kingdom, a son stripped of his name. I have nothing left. Nothing but the memory of her scream and the searing, all-consuming vow taking root in the ashes of my heart.
They say Bianca Falcone died in the massacre.
I don't believe them.
I will find the men who took her. I will find the traitor who orchestrated this. And I will burn their world to the ground. It is the only truth I have left.
