Synopsis

The Goddess Algorithm follows Han Seoyeon, an ordinary 23-year-old cosmetics store associate in Seoul who dies saving a child on a rainy night in Myeongdong — and is brought back to life bonded to the Beauty Transcendence System, an ancient, sentient framework that has been selecting hosts for three hundred years.

Starting with a score of 23 out of 2000 and a rank of F — Unremarkable, Seoyeon must climb through six ranks — F, E, D, C, B, A, and the legendary SS — Celestial — using a combination of real skill, genuine effort, and the System's guidance. She is not a reincarnated princess or a hidden genius. She is a woman who has spent her entire life being invisible, who happens to know more about beauty than almost anyone around her, and who has never once applied that knowledge to herself.

That changes now.

CHAPTER 2: THE SYSTEM SPEAKS

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Han Seoyeon did not sleep that night.

This was not unusual for her. She had always been a poor sleeper, the

kind of person whose brain treated bedtime as an invitation to replay

every mildly embarrassing thing that had happened since the age of

seven. But tonight the insomnia had a different texture. Tonight there

was a softly glowing interface hovering at the edge of her vision

every time she closed her eyes, patient and luminous, like a

smartphone screen that refused to dim.

She lived alone in a 9-pyeong studio apartment in Mapo, which was to

say she lived in a space approximately the size of a generous walk-in

closet, in a building that smelled of instant ramen and someone else's

laundry, on the fourth floor of a staircase that had been threatening

to collapse since at least 2019. It was hers. She had chosen it

herself, furnished it with items from the neighborhood secondhand

market and one extremely good mirror she had found on the street, and

she loved it with the fierce territorial love of someone who had never

had space that was entirely their own before.

She sat cross-legged on her sleeping mat at 2 AM, back against the

wall, and opened the System interface with a thought.

[BEAUTY TRANSCENDENCE SYSTEM]

[Host: Han Seoyeon | Rank: F | Score:

23/1000]

[Available SP (Skill Points): 0]

[Active Quests: 1]

"Show me my stats," she said quietly.

A full panel materialized, more detailed than what she'd seen on the

street:

[HOST PROFILE — HAN SEOYEON]

Skin Clarity: 31/100

Feature Harmony:

28/100

Hair Vitality: 25/100

Body Proportion: 34/100

Aura/Presence:

18/100

Grooming Mastery: 40/100 — HIGHEST STAT

Style Coordination:

22/100

Charisma Influence: 15/100

OVERALL: 23/1000 (F-Rank: Unremarkable)

Seoyeon stared at the numbers for a long time.

They were brutal. She had always suspected, in the abstract way one

suspects things one would prefer not to examine closely, that she was

not particularly attractive. Seeing it quantified was something else.

Skin Clarity: 31. Feature Harmony: 28. Charisma Influence: 15, which

seemed almost personally offensive.

"Is Charisma Influence really fifteen?" she asked.

[Correct. Charisma Influence measures the subconscious impact a host's

presence has on others — the involuntary attention, positive

associations, and social magnetism that beauty generates. A score of

15 indicates minimal effect. Most people's eyes slide past the host

without registering her presence.]

"Most people's eyes slide past me," Seoyeon repeated.

[This is an accurate description of your current social visibility,

yes.]

"You could be more diplomatic about it."

[The System provides accurate assessments. Diplomatic inaccuracy would

undermine the host's ability to progress effectively.]

She pulled her knees to her chest and looked at the one good mirror

across the room. From this distance, in the darkness with only the

ambient glow of the city coming through the window, she could see

herself as a general impression rather than a collection of specific

features — a slight figure, dark hair pulled up messily, an

unremarkable face. Comfortable, as her mother had said. Like

furniture.

"What do I do first?" she asked.

[The System recommends beginning with accessible improvements that

will generate Score points quickly. Your highest current stat is

Grooming Mastery at 40, reflecting your professional knowledge of

cosmetics and application technique. However, you have not been

applying this knowledge to yourself consistently.]

Seoyeon opened her mouth and then closed it. This was true. She was

extremely good at making other people beautiful. She bought her own

makeup erratically, applied it minimally, and had never spent more

than four minutes on her own face in the morning because the effort

had always seemed disproportionate to the result.

[Suggested Initial Actions:]

[1. Establish a consistent skincare

routine — estimated Score impact: +3 to +5 points over 30 days]

[2.

Apply makeup daily using full professional technique — estimated Score

impact: +4 to +6 points]

[3. Upgrade hair care — current Hair Vitality

is 25, suggesting damage and neglect — estimated Score impact: +3 to

+4 points]

[4. Begin reviewing Style Coordination — current wardrobe

analysis indicates 78% of clothing items are either ill-fitting or

past optimal condition]

"Seventy-eight percent," Seoyeon said.

[The gray hoodie you are currently wearing has a small hole near the

left cuff. You have been wearing it as sleepwear for approximately

fourteen months.]

"It's comfortable."

[The System does not dispute this. The System notes that comfort and

attractiveness are not mutually exclusive but that optimizing for only

one at all times limits overall progress.]

Seoyeon looked at the gray hoodie. Then she looked at the System

interface. Then she looked back at the hoodie. It was, she admitted

privately, extremely old. She had bought it during her first year of

university because it was on sale and had never stopped wearing it

because stopping would have required noticing it.

"All right," she said. "Show me the Skill Shop."

[Basic Skill Shop is locked. Unlocked upon completion of Quest 1:

First Impression. Current Score: 23/1000. Target Score: 50/1000.]

"So I have to earn it."

[Correct. The System operates on a progression model. Resources are

unlocked through demonstrated effort and achievement.]

She nodded slowly. This was fine. She understood progression models.

She had spent two years learning the cosmetic industry from the ground

up — stocking shelves, watching makeup artists work, reading every

product description on every bottle that came through the store,

studying tutorial videos on her phone during lunch breaks. She knew

how to learn. She knew how to work. She had just never, before

tonight, had a reason to direct any of that capacity toward herself.

Outside the window, Seoul hummed its endless nighttime hum. Somewhere

across the city, a girl with a score of 23 out of 1000 was sitting on

a sleeping mat with a ghost-light interface in front of her eyes,

making a decision that she would only understand the full weight of

much later.

She opened her phone and ordered a basic skincare set, a protein hair

mask, and a vitamin C serum. Three-day delivery. Then she lay down,

closed her eyes, and let the System's soft glow wash over the inside

of her eyelids like a second heartbeat.

[Rest now, Host. Tomorrow, we begin.]

For the first time in years, Han Seoyeon slept immediately and

completely, and did not dream of being overlooked.
