Chapter 1: The Festival of Lanterns

Haneul’s heart raced as the lanterns floated into the night sky, each one carrying the villagers’ wishes to the heavens. Her village, nestled at the foot of the misty Baekdu Mountains, celebrated the Chuseok Moon Festival, honoring the spirits of ancestors. Yet, Haneul felt out of place—different from the others. Her eyes glimmered unnaturally silver, a secret she kept hidden even from her closest friend, Minjae.

As she released her lantern, she whispered, “Guide me to my destiny.” A sudden gust of wind carried the glowing lantern toward the forest, where shadows twisted unnaturally. Curiosity tugged her forward. Among the gnarled trees, a spectral fox appeared, its nine tails shimmering like molten gold. It bowed gracefully before her, speaking in a voice that echoed like wind over mountains: “Haneul, the moon has chosen you. Darkness stirs, and only you can confront it.”

Haneul’s breath caught. Legends spoke of fox spirits, the Gumiho, and their power to grant—or curse. Her pulse quickened, both in fear and a strange thrill. Something deep in her bones whispered that her life would never be ordinary again.
