Now, a devastating tragedy has forced her home, only to find her pack ruled by a new leader: the infamous Alpha Kael.
She only wants to mourn in peace, but Kael's gaze ignites a searing, unexpected bond she is terrified to feel. After fate so cruelly betrayed her, can she trust it again—especially when it comes in the form of a ruthless new Alpha?
Chapter1
The black dress clung to my skin like a second shadow, soft and sleek, the fabric whispering against my thighs as I moved. I'd chosen it carefully...rebelliously...knowing Caleb would hate it. But tonight was different. Tonight was his nineteenth birthday, the night when Alphas felt the mate bond awaken. The night when everything would finally, finally make sense.
I smoothed the skirt one last time, heart hammering against my ribs.
'You look ridiculous,' Lyra, my wolf, grumbled in my head. 'Like you're trying too hard.'
I ignored her. Lyra had been moody for weeks now, snapping at shadows and growling at nothing. Wolves got restless before the bond snapped into place...everyone knew that. It was just nerves.
Headlights swept across my bedroom window. My pulse spiked.
He's here.
I grabbed my clutch and bolted downstairs, practically flying past my dad in the hallway.
"Elara, wait..." he started, but I was already out the door.
The wild cherry Mustang idled in the driveway, its engine purring like a satisfied predator. Caleb leaned against the driver's side door, arms crossed, his expression unreadable in the dim porch light. Tall, broad-shouldered, with that effortless confidence that came from knowing he'd inherit the Alpha title. Every girl in the pack wanted him.
And he was mine.
"Hey," I breathed, stopping in front of him.
His eyes raked over me...cold, assessing. His jaw tightened.
"What the hell are you wearing?"
The words hit me like a slap. I blinked.
"I...what?"
"Black?" His lip curled. "I told you to wear the blue dress. The one I bought you."
Heat flooded my cheeks. "I thought..."
"You thought wrong." He pushed off the car and opened the passenger door with more force than necessary. "Get in. We're already late."
Shame coiled in my stomach as I slid into the seat. The leather was cold against my bare legs. Caleb slammed the door shut and walked around to the driver's side, his movements sharp, angry.
The car roared to life. We pulled out of the driveway in silence.
"Caleb, I'm sorry, I just..."
"Forget it." His knuckles were white on the steering wheel. "You never listen anyway."
I swallowed hard, staring at my hands. The streetlights flickered past, casting erratic shadows across his face.
"Did you hear about the Crescent Pack?" he said suddenly.
I glanced at him. "What about them?"
"They're moving closer to our territory. My dad says they're looking for trouble." He snorted. "Bunch of savages. No structure, no discipline. Their Alpha's probably some roided-out brute who can't even control his own pack."
"I thought the Crescent Pack was supposed to be... powerful?"
Caleb shot me a look. "Powerful? They're animals, Elara. Real Alphas don't need to throw their weight around like that. They lead with strategy, not brute force." His eyes flicked back to the road. "When I take over, I'll make sure they know their place."
I nodded, even though something about his tone made my stomach twist.
'He talks too much,' Lyra muttered.
Not now.

The parking lot outside the club was packed. Bass thundered through the walls, vibrating the pavement under my feet. Caleb killed the engine and turned to me, his expression softening just a fraction.
"Come here."
I leaned toward him, and he cupped the back of my neck, pulling me into a kiss. It was rough, possessive, his teeth grazing my lower lip. When he pulled back, his eyes were dark.
"You know what tonight is, right?"
My heart stuttered. "Your birthday."
"And?" His thumb traced the line of my jaw. "What else?"
Heat rushed to my face. "The... the mate bond."
"Exactly." His voice dropped, low and rough. "So I need to know. Are you ready?"
I stared at him, my breath catching. "Ready for what?"
"For us." His hand slid down to rest against my collarbone, his fingers warm against my skin. "To make this official. To give yourself to me. Completely."
Oh.
Oh.
My pulse roared in my ears. This was it. The moment I'd been waiting for. The moment when he'd finally claim me as his, when the bond would snap into place and we'd be tethered for life.
"Yes," I whispered. "I'm ready."
His smile was slow, satisfied. "Good girl."
Then he was out of the car, leaving me trembling in the passenger seat.
---
Inside, the club was a chaos of bodies and music. Strobe lights cut through the darkness, illuminating flashes of skin and teeth. Caleb's hand was firm on my lower back as he steered me toward the VIP section, where his friends were already sprawled across the leather booths.
"Ayy, there's the birthday boy!" Jasper called, raising his drink. He was all lazy charm and dangerous eyes, the kind of guy who'd sleep with you and never call.
Sloane sat beside him, legs crossed, her gaze sliding over me like I was something she'd scraped off her shoe. "Elara! You actually came."
"Of course I came," I said, forcing a smile.
"Well, aren't you sweet." She leaned forward, her voice dropping conspiratorially. "So, Caleb. Big night, huh? You finally gonna figure out who your mate is?"
Caleb pulled me onto his lap, his arm wrapping possessively around my waist. "I already know who it is."
My heart soared.
Sloane's smile didn't reach her eyes. "Mmm. Well, if it turns out to be me, I hope you won't mind, Elara."
I laughed...sharp, brittle. "Oh, don't worry. It won't be you."
Silas, sitting quietly in the corner, caught my eye and offered a small, almost apologetic smile. He was the only one who didn't seem to enjoy watching me squirm.
Jasper leaned back, grinning. "Damn, El. You've got claws tonight."
"She's just confident," Caleb said, his hand tightening on my hip. "She knows what's hers."
Sloane's eyes glittered. "We'll see."
---
An hour passed. Maybe two. The music pounded, drinks flowed, and I tried to ignore the way Sloane kept touching Caleb's arm, the way Jasper's gaze lingered too long on my legs.
Then Caleb went still.
His entire body tensed beneath me, his grip on my waist suddenly vise-like.
"Caleb?" I twisted to look at him.
His eyes were distant, unfocused. His nostrils flared.
"Do you smell that?" he murmured.
"Smell what?"
He didn't answer. Slowly, almost mechanically, he stood, setting me aside like I was a piece of furniture. His gaze swept the room, searching, hunting.
And then he saw her.
A girl emerged from the women's restroom. Tall, long-legged, dark hair spilling over her shoulders. She froze when her eyes met his.
The world slowed.
Caleb moved.
She moved.
They collided in the middle of the dance floor, arms wrapping around each other like they'd been separated for a thousand years. His hands were in her hair, her face buried in his neck, and they were both crying...sobbing with joy, with relief, with something I'd never seen on Caleb's face before.
Love.
I stood there, frozen.
Around me, the room spun. Jasper was laughing, his voice distant and warped. Sloane's smirk was a knife twisting in my gut. Silas looked away, jaw tight.
And Caleb...
Caleb didn't even remember I existed.
My vision blurred. My chest cracked open, spilling something raw and broken onto the floor.
No.
No no no no no...
I ran.
Shoved through the crowd, stumbled out into the parking lot, the cold night air burning my lungs. My wolf howled in my head, a sound of pure, animal rage.
'I told you!' Lyra snarled. 'I told you he wasn't ours!'
I didn't stop running.
I didn't stop until the pavement turned to dirt, the buildings to trees, and my legs gave out beneath me.
Then I shifted.
Fur erupted from my skin, bones snapping and reforming in a blur of agony. Lyra took over, her fury pouring through my veins like liquid fire.
And we ran.
We ran until the moon was high and the forest was silent.
We ran until there was nothing left.
