Synopsis

For high school nobody Leo Martinez, star quarterback Chad Kingsley is a problem he solves by being invisible. But when a simple shove in the hallway results in Chad humiliating himself, a strange new reality emerges.

Every act of malice aimed at Leo somehow boomerangs back onto Chad, each time with more spectacularly disastrous and public results.

Chapter1

The four minutes between classes at Northwood High were a contact sport. Leo Martinez just tried not to get hit. His strategy was simple: hug the wall, keep his head down, and pray. His goal wasn’t to be popular; it was to be invisible.

He was almost at his trigonometry class when the crowd in front of him parted like the Red Sea. Leo didn’t need to look up. He knew that specific ripple in the school’s social fabric. It was Chad Kingsley, the star quarterback, walking down the middle of the hall like he owned it. He was flanked by his usual two shadows, both built like refrigerators.

Leo pressed himself against the lockers, trying to look as interesting as a patch of beige paint. But Chad was looking in his direction. No, not at him. Past him.

Maya Chen was at her locker a few feet away. She was pulling out a book, completely ignoring the king and his court. Chad hated being ignored.

Leo was in the blast radius.

Chad’s voice cut through the noise.

A heavy hand slammed into Leo’s shoulder. It wasn't a tap, it was a shove, meant to send him and his books flying. Leo stumbled, his feet tangling as he fought for balance. This was it, the classic hallway takedown. He braced himself for the fall and the wave of laughter that would follow.

But the laughter that came wasn't for him.

He caught his balance and looked back. Chad was on the floor.

It happened so fast it was hard to process. Chad had shoved him, but as he pulled his arm back, the huge, chunky championship ring on his finger had snagged on a strap of his own backpack.

The simple, stupid snag threw him completely off balance. He tripped over his own feet, arms flailing, and went down hard. To make matters worse, he had landed face-first on a bright yellow  sign the janitor had left out.

The hallway, which had been a river of noise, went quiet for a second. Then it erupted. It started with a few snickers, then grew into open laughter. Phones were out, cameras flashing, recording the king of Northwood High groaning on the dirty linoleum.

“Whoa, you okay?”

Leo turned. Maya was standing right there, her hand hovering near his arm. She had seen the whole thing. There was a spark of amusement in her eyes.

Leo said, his voice barely a whisper.

she said, nodding at Chad, who was now scrambling to his feet, his face red with fury. He looked around, trying to find someone to blame, but all he saw was a sea of laughing faces. His eyes finally locked onto Leo.

he started to yell.

The late bell rang, its loud shriek cutting him off. It was the sound of salvation. The crowd started moving again, eager to share the gossip in their next class.

Maya said.

Leo didn't need to be told twice. He gave her a quick nod and disappeared into the flow of students. He slid into his seat at the back of his trig class just as the door closed. He sat there, his heart pounding, replaying the moment in his head.

Chad had shoved him.

And somehow, Chad had ended up on the floor.

It made no sense. It was a freak accident. It had to be.

But as he stared at the whiteboard, he couldn't shake the image of Chad’s furious, humiliated face. It was an accident, for sure.

A really, really lucky accident.
