Chapter1
The emergency board meeting had been a maelstrom of inflated egos and thinly veiled threats, a tempest Pepper Potts had navigated with the steely calm that defined her tenure as CEO of Stark Industries. She had just sunk back into the buttery leather of her office chair, the panoramic view of Manhattan a silent, glittering accomplice to her brief moment of peace, when the composed voice of F.R.I.D.A.Y. sliced through the quiet.
“Ms. Potts, I apologize for the interruption, but I feel obligated to remind you that Mr. Stark’s press conference regarding the new energy initiative is scheduled to begin in precisely five minutes.”
The data on her tablet blurred. Five minutes. Pepper’s heart gave a violent lurch, a sudden, frantic drumbeat against her ribs. The conference—a massive publicity event she had spent weeks orchestrating—had been completely wiped from her mind by the boardroom battle. A string of curses, colorful and inventive enough to make a sailor blush, echoed in her head. She shot to her feet, her meticulously chosen Jimmy Choos a liability on the polished marble floor as she sprinted from her office. The only thought ricocheting through her skull was a frantic chant of *Tony, Tony, Tony*. She bypassed the public elevators, her keycard granting her access to the express lift that plunged directly to the heart of the tower: Tony’s personal lair.
The doors slid open to a controlled chaos of gleaming chrome and holographic blueprints. And there he was, oblivious, a grease smudge on his cheek, completely absorbed in calibrating the repulsor of an iron gauntlet. The low hum of machinery was the only sound, a stark contrast to the storm raging within Pepper.
"Tony!" she called out, her voice sharp with a breathless edge that betrayed her sprint.
He glanced up, his expression shifting from focused intensity to a slow, appreciative grin that always managed to simultaneously infuriate and disarm her. “Pepper. To what do I owe the pleasure? Did you miss me already?”
“The press conference,” she managed, leaning against the doorframe to catch her breath. “The one for the arc reactor technology that’s happening in—F.R.I.D.A.Y., time check!”
“Three minutes and forty-two seconds, Ms. Potts,” the AI replied, its placid tone almost mocking.
“You have to go. Now.” She strode forward, her CEO authority in full effect, and snatched the gauntlet from his workbench, placing it carefully aside before grabbing his arm. “Come on. You can play with your toys later.”
“Hey, careful with that,” Tony protested, though he made no move to resist as she practically dragged him towards the elevator. “That’s a multi-million dollar toy. And besides,” he added, his voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial murmur as the elevator doors closed, encasing them in a small, private world of brushed steel and soft lighting, “I was just getting to the good part.” He leaned against the wall, his eyes tracing the frantic rise and fall of her chest. “You’re out of breath. Did you run all the way down here for me? I’m flattered.”
Pepper ignored the jibe, her fingers flying as she jabbed the button for the conference hall floor. “You’re wearing a Black Sabbath t-shirt and jeans, Tony. For a press conference that’s being broadcast globally.”
“It’s a classic,” he defended, plucking at the worn cotton. “It shows I’m a man of the people.” A stray strand of her strawberry-blonde hair had escaped her usually perfect chignon, clinging to her damp temple. Without thinking, he reached out, his thumb gently brushing it back into place. His touch was light, fleeting, but it sent a spark across her skin. “Besides, you look a little… frazzled. It’s a good look for you. Very ‘damsel in distress,’ though I know you’d sooner rescue yourself.”
The warmth of his fingers lingered on her skin long after his hand had dropped away. The confined space of the elevator suddenly felt a hundred degrees warmer, charged with an energy that had nothing to do with arc reactors. The light, flirtatious tone was their native language, a constant back-and-forth that blurred the lines between boss and employee, friend and… something else.
The elevator chimed, opening to the frantic buzz of backstage. A harried-looking assistant rushed forward with a suit jacket and a tie. “Mr. Stark, Ms. Potts, you’re on in sixty seconds.”
“See? Perfectly on time,” Tony said with a triumphant smirk, shrugging off his t-shirt without a hint of shame and pulling on the crisp white shirt waiting for him.
Pepper took the jacket and tie, falling into a familiar, practiced rhythm. It was a dance they had done a thousand times. She held the dark Armani jacket for him as he slid his arms in, her fingers brushing the warm skin of his neck. Then came the tie. As he lifted his chin, her hands moved with an expert’s precision, looping the silk, tucking, and tightening. It was a moment of pure, focused intimacy amidst the chaos. The muffled roar of the expectant press corps outside was a world away. Here, there was only the scent of his cologne, the whisper of fabric, and the steady beat of his heart beneath her hands.
“You know,” Tony murmured, his gaze fixed on her face, “if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you enjoy taking care of me.” His eyes twinkled. “Careful, Potts. People might think you’re falling for me.”
Her hands stilled for a fraction of a second. She didn’t look up, instead focusing intently on perfecting the dimple in his tie. It was a defense mechanism she’d honed over years—when his teasing hit too close to home, she retreated into professionalism. But her body betrayed her. In that moment of intense concentration, a small, unconscious gesture gave her away: she caught her bottom lip between her teeth. It was a habit from childhood, one that only appeared when she was deeply focused or flustered.
And he saw it. Of course, he saw it. A flicker of something unreadable crossed his face, a shift from playful teasing to genuine tenderness. The smirk softened into a real smile.
“All done,” she said, her voice a little too crisp as she smoothed down the lapels of his jacket, her hands patting his chest one last time. She finally met his eyes, ready with a sharp retort, but the words died on her lips. The look in his eyes wasn’t teasing anymore. It was open, appreciative, and intensely focused on her.
“You’re breathtakingly beautiful, you know that?” he said, his voice a low rumble. He leaned in, and for a wild second, she thought he was going to kiss her, right there in front of a dozen crew members. Instead, his lips brushed against her ear, his warm breath sending a shiver down her spine as he whispered two words in a language she didn’t understand, but whose meaning she felt in the very marrow of her bones.
*“Cara mea.”*
Before she could process it, before she could even ask what it meant, he pulled back slightly, his expression turning serious. The roar of the crowd intensified as the stage doors began to open.
“Pepper,” he said, his voice firm, cutting through the noise. “After this… we have something important to talk about.”
