Synopsis

I was the half-breed bastard sold in a political marriage to the ruthless Alpha Kaelen. To him, I was a duty, not his fated mate.

He forced me to sign a pact that would strip me of my own children. When I told him I was pregnant with his twin heirs, he called it a "complication." And when rogues attacked me, he severed our bond and left me to die.

To save my own soul, I forced him to do what he always wanted: he rejected me in front of his entire pack, shattering the bond and his own heart in the process.

Now he’s back, a broken Alpha begging for a second chance. He thinks a grand gesture can heal the wounds he inflicted.

But he’s about to learn that a rejected Luna protecting her pups is a force more powerful than any Alpha. He started this war. I'm going to end it.

Chapter1

Alpha Kaelen moved through the dense forest of the Blackmoon Pack’s territory with a predator’s economy of motion. Every rustle of leaves, every distant snap of a twig, registered in his mind not as a distraction, but as a data point in the vast, living algorithm of his domain. At twenty-four, he was the youngest Alpha in a century to command a pack of this size and influence, and the weight of that legacy was a constant, familiar pressure on his shoulders. Duty was the air he breathed, power the ground beneath his feet.

His wolf, a massive black beast of pure Alpha lineage, paced restlessly in his mind. The border is secure, the wolf grumbled, its thoughts a low rumble against his own. The patrols are redundant. We should be at the training grounds, sharpening the claws of our warriors.

Kaelen mentally soothed the beast. Patience. An Alpha’s strength isn’t just in his claws, but in his vigilance.

It was then that a scent, alien and yet captivating, cut through the familiar musk of pine and damp earth. It was a fragrance he couldn’t place—wildflowers after a summer storm, clean and sharp, with an underlying sweetness that promised warmth. It was wrong. It didn’t belong to any known member of his pack. It spelled intruder.

He followed the scent, his movements becoming utterly silent. He expected a rogue, a threat to be neutralized. Instead, he found a scene that arrested him.

Crouched near the roots of an ancient oak was a she-wolf, though she was in her human form. She was tending to a grievously injured Omega, an old male whose leg was caught in a rusted hunter’s trap. The air was thick with the coppery tang of the Omega’s fear and pain, but the girl’s scent was a defiant counterpoint of calm and…something else. Compassion. She was murmuring to the old wolf, her voice a low, soothing melody as she worked to pry the metal jaws apart.

She was slender, almost fragile for a were, with dark, wavy hair that fell over her shoulders. When she finally freed the Omega’s leg and looked up, her gaze met the shadows where Kaelen stood concealed. Her eyes were the color of the sky just before dawn, a startling, luminous blue. He felt a faint, almost imperceptible tug deep within his soul, a string being plucked in a forgotten chamber of his heart. It was the whisper of the mate bond, so faint he almost dismissed it as a trick of the light.

A half-breed, his wolf sneered, catching the subtle dilution in her potent scent. Human. The realization was a splash of cold water. She is weak.

Kaelen pushed the thought aside, his focus locking on her actions. She tore a strip from her own worn tunic to bind the old wolf’s wound, her movements gentle and sure. She was no threat. He watched for another moment, the strange scent of her—rain and wildflowers—imprinting itself in his mind, then melted back into the trees, the image of her an unsettling, vibrant intrusion into his orderly world.

That evening, the unwelcome memory of her was forcibly replaced by matters of state. His father, the formidable former Alpha Valerius, summoned him to the great hall. Valerius was a creature of pragmatism, his reign having been defined by strategic alliances rather than brute force.

“Kaelen,” his father began, his voice the sound of grinding stones. “The Crescent Moon Pack to the east has been a thorn in our side for generations. Their Alpha, Tiberius, is old, but his pack is rich in the resources we lack.”

Kaelen stood impassively. “I am aware. Their warriors are undisciplined.”

“But their territory is valuable,” Valerius countered. “Tiberius has made an offer. A treaty. An alliance bound by blood.”

Kaelen’s jaw tightened. “A marriage.”

“Yes.” His father’s gaze was hard, unemotional. “He has a daughter. A bastard, born of a human woman he kept. She is of his blood, but tainted. Her name is Elara. He offers her to you as a mate, and with her, a truce and shared access to the southern hunting grounds for a decade.”

Kaelen felt a cold dread mix with a shocking jolt of recognition. Elara. The girl from the forest. The half-breed. The mate bond, which he had tried to ignore, gave a sudden, violent lurch, as if recognizing its other half in his father’s words.

From her seat by the hearth, his mother, the elegant and severe former Luna Seraphina, spoke for the first time. Her voice was like chilled silver. “Valerius, you cannot be serious. Tying our Alpha line to a half-human? It is an insult. It will dilute our bloodline, weaken our future. The pack will see it as a sign of desperation.”

“The pack will see it as a sign of strength,” Valerius boomed. “We gain territory without spilling a drop of blood. The girl is a footnote. A political tool. Kaelen, your duty is to the pack, not to your pride. You will accept.”

Kaelen’s mind was a maelstrom. The girl—Elara—was his mate. The Moon Goddess, in her infinite and cruel wisdom, had bound him to a creature of inferior blood. He could feel his wolf raging against the insult, yet simultaneously drawn to her by a force of nature he couldn't deny. He looked from his father’s unyielding face to his mother’s disgusted one. His path was clear. It was always clear.

“I will do my duty,” Kaelen said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. “For the pack.”

He would take her. He would bind himself to her. But in his heart, he vowed she would be a Luna in name only—a quiet, background presence, a constant reminder of a duty fulfilled and a pride compromised.
