Eve
The scent of pine and damp earth clings to the air, a wild, clean smell that was a world away from the city smog I had left behind. For a week, I’d been a guest—or perhaps a charity case—of the Black Moon Pack. They had offered me sanctuary when my car broke down on their remote territory border, a lone human stumbling into a world of myth. They gave me a small, clean cabin and a simple job: helping care for the sick and injured in their infirmary cave.
It was the pack’s youngest members, the cubs, who captured my heart. Today, it was little Leo, his leg poorly set after a fall, who was whimpering in his cot. He wasn't crying from pain, but from loneliness. His mother was on patrol, and he missed his companion, a tiny fawn he’d befriended in the woods before his accident.
“He needs his friend, Eve,” Leo’s caretaker, an older she-wolf named Elara, whispered to me. “The Alpha would have my hide, but the boy’s spirit is fading.”
The Alpha. Kain Blackwood. I’d only seen him from a distance, a terrifying titan of a man who moved with the fluid grace of a predator. His presence was a physical weight, a pressure that made the air crackle. The pack revered and feared him in equal measure. Breaking his rules was unthinkable.
But looking at Leo’s tear-streaked face, I made a decision. A reckless, stupid decision.
“I’ll do it,” I whispered back. “Keep watch.”
Sneaking the fawn, with its spindly legs and wide, frightened eyes, into the heart of the pack’s territory was the most terrifying thing I’d ever done. The infirmary cave was a sacred space, meant for wolves alone. The scent of an outside creature here was a profound violation.
The moment Leo saw the fawn, his face lit up with a joy so pure it stole my breath. He hugged its neck, burying his face in its soft fur. The fawn, recognizing its friend, bleated softly and licked his cheek. It was a perfect, forbidden moment of happiness.
That’s when the air changed.
The warmth of the cave was instantly leeched away, replaced by an arctic chill. The low hum of conversations stopped. Every wolf in the cave went unnaturally still, their heads bowed. A presence filled the entrance, a shadow that blotted out the light.
Alpha Kain Blackwood stepped inside.
He was even larger up close, a monolith of muscle and menacing power packed into a deceptively human frame. His hair was the color of a raven’s wing, his eyes the searing, molten gold of a predator. He wore simple black cargo pants and a tight-fitting shirt that did nothing to hide the brutal topography of his physique. His gaze swept the room, cold and imperious, and I felt my blood turn to ice.
Then his eyes landed on the fawns.
The temperature dropped another ten degrees. A low, guttural growl rumbled in his chest, a sound that vibrated through the stone floor and up my spine. It wasn't just anger; it was the sound of violated sovereignty.
His golden eyes, burning with a terrifying fire, lifted from the fawn and locked onto me. I was the only one standing tall, the only one not of his pack, the source of this desecration. He didn't have to say a word. In that singular, devastating gaze, I was tried, judged, and condemned.
He took a step towards me. The world narrowed to the space between us. I couldn't breathe. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. But beneath the terror, something else sparked to life—a strange, electric hum, a dizzying pull towards the very thing I should be running from.
He stopped a foot away. He was so close I could feel the heat rolling off his body. He inhaled, a sharp, almost imperceptible intake of breath. His nostrils flared. For a split second, the rage in his eyes was eclipsed by something else. Something wild, shocked, and utterly possessive.
It was as if he was seeing me—truly seeing me—for the first time. And in that moment, I knew I had done more than just break a rule. I had trespassed on something far more sacred, something that belonged only to him.
