I had always been good at pretending I belonged.

That was probably why no one looked twice when I stood in the middle of the crowded gallery with a glass of cheap champagne in my hand, smiling at people whose names I forgot the second they walked away. I knew when to laugh. I knew how to tilt my head as if I was listening to every word. I knew how to look like a young artist on the edge of a bright future, not a girl who sometimes woke up at three in the morning with her heart racing, certain she had heard something calling from far away.

The gallery was tucked into a narrow street in Chelsea, all white walls, polished concrete, and people dressed in black pretending they did not care how much everyone else noticed them. My final-year exhibition piece hung near the back, beneath a narrow strip of light. It was a large oil painting of a girl standing at the edge of a dark forest, her bare feet planted in snow, her face turned toward a moon she could not reach.

I had painted it without thinking too much about why.

Chloe said it was haunting. Sophia said it looked expensive, which was her highest form of praise.

I said it was just a study in contrast.

That was another thing I was good at. Giving simple answers.

"Great. Very marketable."

Chloe leaned close and lowered her voice. "Speaking of marketable, that woman in the silver jacket has been looking at your painting for ten minutes. Rich aunt energy. Go talk to her."

I glanced across the room. A woman with silver hair and red lipstick stood in front of my canvas, one hand resting at her throat. She was studying the moon in the painting with an expression I could not read.

My stomach tightened in the familiar way it did whenever opportunity came too close. I wanted my work to be seen. Of course I did. I rolled my eyes, but I crossed the room.

The woman in the silver jacket turned before I reached her, as if she had sensed me coming. Her perfume hit me first.

It was strange. Not bad, exactly. Dark roses, smoke, and something mineral underneath, like rain on stone. It should have been subtle, but the scent seemed to slide under my skin. My fingers tightened around my glass.

"You are Aurora Vale," she said.

Her accent was European, though I could not place it. Smooth, careful, old money without trying.

The words landed too close.

"Not like this."

Chloe watched her go. "Okay. Who was that?"

"I'm not sure."

"That is not a comforting answer."

I handed her the card.

She read it, eyebrows rising. "Lunaris Arts Foundation. Sounds fake. Or rich. Possibly both."

Sophia joined us and plucked the card from Chloe's hand. "No, the paper is too good to be fake. Fake people use glossy cardstock. Real rich people use paper that feels like it was made from endangered trees."

"Sophia."

"What? I'm not endorsing the trees. I'm just saying this is expensive."

Chloe looked at me. The joking left her face. "Are you thinking about it?"

I should have said no. I should have put the card in the nearest trash can and gone back to pretending my life was normal.

Instead, I looked across the room at my painting. The girl at the edge of the forest looked back at the moon, waiting.

"Maybe," I said.

Chloe groaned. "That's your dangerous voice."

"I don't have a dangerous voice."

"You do. It's soft and reasonable right before you make a decision that gives me stress hives."

Sophia handed the card back. "At least research it first. Properly. Not your usual three-minute search while drinking coffee over your laptop."

"I will."

I meant it.

That night, after the gallery closed and the three of us spilled into the cold New York air, I tried to forget the woman in silver. We went for greasy fries at a diner near campus because Chloe said no meaningful life event was complete without potatoes. Sophia flirted with the waiter for extra pickles. I laughed. I ate. I let the warm noise of my friends wrap around me.

A soft knock came at the door.

There was that word again.

The champagne caught the light in pale bubbles. It smelled sweet, with a faint floral note that reminded me of the woman in the silver jacket.

My fingers tightened around the stem.
