The forest began where cultivated land ended, at a row of boundary stones so old they had forgotten the sun. Gautam’s boots paused there. Morning mist drifted out between the trunks like the forest’s own slow breath, carrying the sour-green scent of cedar and something older—something that tasted of iron on the tongue. He swallowed, wiped damp palms on his coat, and stepped over the nearest stone.

The hush was immediate. No birdcall, no squirrel scold, only the soft crush of needles under his soles. He had walked woods before, yet this silence felt deliberate, as though every branch leaned closer to listen. Gautam forced his breathing to slow and spoke under his breath the way Grandmother Eudanor used to when she hung laundry at twilight.

“Peace to root and branch. I come with open heart.”

The mist thickened, curling ankle-high, then knee-high, until he could barely see the russet sleeves of his own coat. It did not swirl at random; it shaped a narrow path, luminous, beckoning. He followed because turning back would break the only promise he had ever been asked to keep.

Twenty careful paces onward, the fog parted like theatre curtains. A glade opened, no larger than a cottage yard, floored with moss so deep it bounced beneath him. In its centre stood a woman—tall, skin the colour of moonlit river ice, hair black as wet ash. She wore a cloak that seemed cut from bark and shadow. Her eyes glowed the way embers glow when you dare them to burn you.

“Human,” she said, voice low, “state the purpose that drags you past the threshold stone.”

Gautam’s knees threatened to fold, but he kept his spine straight. “My name is Gautam. My family has lived at the forest’s edge for four generations. I was sent to renew the old pact.”

“Words,” she answered. “Words rot faster than leaves.”

She stepped forward; the moss sighed under her bare feet. Gautam noticed the pointed ears only when they twitched at a distant crack of timber. She studied him, head tilted as if reading a scent.

“Your blood reeks of iron ploughs, of fires fed with living wood. Why should I trust iron-children?”

He had rehearsed speeches on the walk here—clever, courtly, persuasive. Under that gaze they crumbled. He dropped to one knee, pressed his bare right hand to the moss. The soil beneath was cold, grainy, humming with tiny movements of life.

“I offer no parchment,” he said. “Only what my grandmother gave me when I was seven.”

He closed his eyes, let the memory rise: her cracked voice at winter hearth, fingers tapping the rhythm on his knee. He repeated the words exactly, syllables awkward on his tongue yet familiar as a lullaby half-remembered.

“Ash na kerna, vel sae lom. Heart to earth, hand to loam. What is taken is given again; what is broken is bound by rain.”

The glade held its breath. Then, between his splayed fingers, a green shoot broke the moss. Another followed, and another—tiny ferns uncurling with impossible speed, brushing his skin like grateful hands. Their fragrance rose, pepper-sweet.

He lifted his hand, startled. The seedlings stayed upright, roots already gripping. When he looked up, the guardian’s glow had softened to silver.

“You speak the old tongue without twisting it,” she murmured. “Few iron-children bother to learn.”

Gautam risked a question. “Does this prove my line?”

“It proves memory,” she replied. “Memory may be stolen. Stand.”

He obeyed. She moved closer; the air around her tasted of storm. From her cloak she drew a thorn the length of his little finger, obsidian black, tip glistening.

“Blood remembers louder than tongue,” she said. “A single drop on this thorn, freely given, will speak truth or falsehood to the roots. Refuse, and you leave now, never to return.”

Gautam stared at the thorn. Grandmother had warned him: the forest sometimes asked for blood, but never more than a person could spare. He had imagined heroics; now his stomach churned. Still, he reached out.

“Take it,” he said.

She pricked the pad of his thumb so swiftly he felt only pressure. A dark bead welled, clung, then slid onto the thorn. She held the thorn level with her eyes. The drop shimmered, then sank into the blackness as water into dry earth. A low sound rose—like wind through hollow bamboo—then silence.

Neyara exhaled. “True line. True vow.” She turned the thorn between slender fingers. “Yet truth of blood does not cleanse debt. Your people felled the Mother Hemlock three winters past. Her hollow still bleeds.”

Guilt punched him; he had joined the men with saws, though only to carry logs. “I remember,” he whispered. “I came to ask how amends may be made.”

“Ask?” Her brows arched. “Most humans demand: timber, game, herbs. You ask?”

“I have no right to demand.”

A long moment she studied him, as if weighing dust. Then she snapped the thorn in two. From each half grew a pale blossom, petals like parchment. She tucked one behind her ear; the other she pressed into his palm.

“Plant this where your heart first listened to the forest,” she instructed. “Tend it seven years. If it lives, the debt thins. If it dies, your line forgets this path forever.”

He closed his fingers gently around the bloom. “And you will guide me out?”

“I will not,” she answered. “The path opens only one way for strangers. Find your own track; the forest will watch.”

Gautam nodded, hiding the tremor in his knees. He turned, took three steps, then halted. Glancing back, he saw her standing motionless, cloak blending with bark.

“May I speak one more question?”

“You may.”

He swallowed. “The Mother Hemlock—did she have a name?”

Something shifted in the guardian’s face—surprise, perhaps sorrow. “Names are given by root-friends. She had many. I called her Ash-of-Dawns.”

“I will remember,” Gautam said.

She inclined her head. “Remembering is a beginning.”

The mist folded around her, erasing glow and glade alike. Gautam found himself alone among ordinary trunks, the blossom cool against his skin. Somewhere a thrush resumed song, tentative, as if testing the morning. He drew breath, chose a direction that smelled of cedar, and walked, each footstep sounding like a promise freshly spoken and not yet broken.
