Pinocchio woke before the alarm, the room so cold the radiator clicked like a metronome. He kept his eyes on the cracked ceiling and mouthed the promise he made every morning: “Today I’ll tell the truth all the way through.” The words left a small cloud in the air; even his breath felt borrowed.

He swung his legs off the mattress. Wood knuckles, wood ankles, but the soles of his feet were soft now—worn down from months of walking human sidewalks. He padded to the sink, ran the lukewarm trickle, and shaved the night’s splinters from his chin with a disposable razor he’d bought three Sundays ago. The blade scraped, the timber dust smelled like pencil sharpenings in a schoolroom long ago. He tried not to think about schoolrooms; they made him think about lying to teachers, which made him think about his nose, which made him check the mirror. Same length as yesterday. Good. A fair start.

Coffee came from a jar of brown powder. He measured one flat teaspoon because two cost double. While the kettle burped steam he dressed: grey trousers from the charity bin, sweater the color of old bricks, red woollen cap tugged low enough to hide the small seam where his forehead met temple. Dressed, he looked almost like the boys who queued outside the phone shop on the corner. Almost.

The kettle clicked off. He poured water over the powder, watched the brown bloom swirl, then carried the cup to the window. Outside, the city still wore night, but the streetlights wore tinsel halos. Christmas Eve: he could smell it in the diesel fumes and the pine wreaths tied to the lamp-posts. Somewhere below, a delivery van door slammed. Pinocchio sipped the bitter coffee and rehearsed the plan: buy one small gift for Lila—something, anything—then survive the day without a single lie. How hard could it be?

He rinsed the cup, set it upside-down on the drainer, and left the flat before courage cooled.

The supermarket opened at seven. Pinocchio arrived at six-fifty-five, hands in pockets, counting and re-counting the coins he’d scraped from bus seats and café floors. Eighty-three cents. Inside, warm air hit him like a baker’s sigh. Shoppers grabbed trolleys; a plastic Santa bobbed overhead, ho-hoing on a frayed wire.

Pinocchio joined the shortest queue—baskets only. He held a tiny snow-globe the size of a tennis ball. When he shook it, a plastic reindeer slid on invisible rails. Price tag: one euro. He needed seventeen cents of mercy.

The cashier, a woman with tinsel earrings, scanned the globe. “One twenty.”

Pinocchio’s tongue moved faster than thought. “I have a card.” The lie left his lips and his nose shot forward, bumping the card-reader with a soft thud. The woman blinked. The man behind him snorted. A child pointed and laughed, high bright laughter that stung worse than nettles.

Pinocchio felt the heat crawl up his cheeks. He lifted his cap, scratched his forehead as if that could hide the growth. “Sorry—what I meant is I’ve got coins.” He poured the eighty-three cents onto the rubber belt. They rolled in wobbling circles. The cashier’s eyes softened; she pushed the coins into a neat pile.

“Seventeen cents short, love.”

“I—” He stopped himself before the next lie formed, clenched his jaw so hard he heard a tiny creak. “I don’t have more. I’m sorry.” Truth. The nose stayed put.

The woman glanced at the queue, then at the snow-globe. She popped it into a paper bag anyway. “Merry Christmas,” she said, pressing the bag into his hand. “Next customer, please.”

Pinocchio fled, cheeks burning, nose normal, heart hammering louder than the Santa speaker.

Outside, daylight had finally pried itself over the rooftops. He walked the long way to the office so he could calm down. Snow-globe in pocket, he practiced breathing like humans did—slow, shaky, but good enough. The building lobby smelled of pine disinfectant. He rode the lift with a woman who wore silver bells on her shoes; they jingled every time the lift juddered. Pinocchio stared at the numbers climbing and promised himself again: no lies, not even small white ones.

The open-plan office buzzed with tinsel and low gossip about who’d kissed whom at yesterday’s mini-party. He slipped to his cubicle, booted the computer, and opened the spreadsheet he’d been avoiding since Monday. Numbers swam. He rubbed his eyes. At ten-thirty sharp, Mr. Hoffman appeared, sleeves rolled, coffee breath announcing him before words did.

“Pinocchio, the quarterly summary—done?”

The truthful answer sat in his throat like a stone: No, not even started. But the stone wouldn’t come out. Instead he heard himself say, “Absolutely, sir.” His nose sprang forward, knocking the monitor an inch backward. The screen wobbled; his reflection wobbled with it, elongated nose and all.

A ripple of laughter traveled across the cubicles. Someone clapped. Someone else whistled. Mr. Hoffman’s eyebrows rose, then lowered into a frown that looked almost sorry.

“Son,” he said quietly, “go home. Come back when you’re ready to tell me the truth.” He didn’t shout, didn’t threaten; he simply turned and walked away, shoulders saging under a festive sweater dotted with reindeer.

Pinocchio logged off, packed the snow-globe into his satchel, and left while the laughter died behind him. The lift felt colder going down.

On the street, the morning had turned sharp and bright. He wandered without destination, past shop windows full of star-shaped lights, past buskers strumming “Jingle Bells” with frozen fingers. His stomach growled but lunch money had become snow-globe money. He told himself hunger was a kind of honesty—body admitting need.

At a corner stall selling second-hand junk, he paused. A music-box sat among scratched vinyl and cracked plates. The vendor, an old man with breath fogging like a dragon’s, lifted the lid. Inside, a tiny ballerina wobbled; the tune chimed slow and off-key, like a lullaby remembering itself. The man asked for fifty cents. Pinocchio searched his pockets: forty-three. He showed the coins in his open palm, no lie attached. The man shrugged. “Merry Christmas,” he said, and dropped the box into a paper bag along with a stray peppermint.

Pinocchio found a bench in the park facing the giant municipal tree. Dusk had folded the sky into lavender. Parents snapped photos; children chased each other around the railing. He sat alone, bag on knees, and opened the music-box. The ballerina spun lopsided circles; the broken notes rose, fragile but audible. A little girl in a purple coat stopped mid-run. She leaned closer, eyes wide. “Pretty,” she whispered. Pinocchio offered the box. She took it gently, as if holding a bird, and placed it on her mittens. The tune wobbled on. Two more children drifted over, then a third. They formed a quiet half-circle, eyes reflecting the colored lights. None mentioned the nose; maybe in the half-dark they thought it was a shadow.

The ballerina slowed; the last note hung like a glass ornament, then silence. The children sighed, a small collective sound. One boy looked up. “Play it again?” Pinocchio wound the key; the spring clicked; the song resumed. Parents behind them smiled, phones still in pockets. Snow began to fall—thin dry flakes that melted before touching cloth.

Pinocchio felt something warm move inside his chest, not magic, not redemption, just the simple warmth of being watched without ridicule. He did not think about tomorrow’s rent or the unpaid spreadsheet or the lie he would probably tell again by sunrise. He thought only of the children’s faces, lit alternately red, green, gold, and of the tiny tune that had brought them closer.

When the spring unwound a second time, the girl returned the box. “Thank you, mister,” she said, and ran off after the others. The parents followed, calling gentle warnings about slippery paths. Pinocchio closed the lid. Snow kept falling, softer now, like flour sifted through a sieve. He tucked the box inside his coat, next to the snow-globe, and stayed on the bench while the park emptied and the lights blinked off one circuit at a time.

His nose was its usual length; he had not spoken in half an hour. That was enough of a gift for one night. He stood, brushed flakes from his trousers, and walked home through the hush, the broken lullaby still ticking faintly against his ribs.
