Chapter One

The wipe came at 00:47 local time, and Nora watched it the way a doctor watches a code flatline: calm, clinical, a little bored, then quietly furious when the numbers refused to come back. Titan-Vortex had gone into intermission with her heal-over-time stacked three deep, and the tank had walked out of the gold circle like he was sightseeing. The party dropped in a little more than three seconds, body by body, a row of dominoes with names she already hated.

Above the death recap, where the damage breakdown usually loaded, a green window blinked in.

She stared at it. Thirty seconds. In the corner of her second monitor, her stream chat moved at the pace of a dying sloth. three viewers, one of them her own phone.

"Wow," she said, into the muted mic. "Great tank. Big beautiful man." The chat did nothing. She rolled her mouse wheel toward DECLINE, because that was what you did with pop-ups that knew your real name, and the cursor went where her hand told it to go.

The window folded itself into the corner of her screen and sat there, a thin green status bar.

`SYSTEM VERIFIED ▸ OBSERVING`

"Okay," she said, to no one. She pecked her phone with one knuckle: NOT FUNNY, MARCUS. The reply came back with a photograph of a loaf of bread and no words. She resisted the urge to call him a bastard with a caps lock offensive, because she was twenty-six years old and had achieved serenity. The green bar hummed. It had no business humming—it was an overlay, an overlay has no fan—but it hummed anyway, a low electric breath like the back of a refrigerator.

She checked the raid chat. The usual phrase, made of four letters, was cycling. She muted the tab and sat in the warm dark of her apartment with the PC's cooling tower rattling under the desk, and she pressed Play again.

At 02:14 she won an arena match on a healer in a way that would have made a worse player proud. Fourteen people watched. In a lull between cooldowns she said, without looking at the camera, "All right, chat, I'm gonna be honest, this MMR is so inflated I could tie it to a balloon and lose it in the ceiling." No one laughed. That was fine. She was in a rhythm now, the good trance, where her fingers knew where to go before her head did. She pressed the space bar with the side of her thumb, exactly, perfectly, and the match ended on a revive she had no business landing.

A chime sounded. She thought it was her water boiling in the other room.

"C+," she said. Out loud, to an empty room, which was worse. "Who grades a body C+? That's a whole-ass report card." Her water was not boiling. She stood up anyway. Her back made a sound like a tent collapsing, and she went to the bathroom to wash her face.

The bathroom light was the color of an old bandage. She should fix it; she'd been meaning to fix it. She splashed cold water from the tap, pressed both palms flat under her eyes, and looked in the mirror. There was a mole under the outer corner of her left eye.

She knew every inch of this face the way you know a song you hate on the office radio: intimately, without consent. There had never been a mole. She leaned in, tilting her head. It was small, well formed, brown with a depth of pigment like the end of a pencil. Higher on the cheekbone than she liked. In the exact spot where she had once, at sixteen, drawn a star with her mother's makeup pencil and then wiped it off before anyone could see.

She touched it. Her fingertip came away with nothing. It was attached. It had real texture. She squinted at it, and for exactly one second the shape resolved into a five-pointed star, a small bright geometry, and then her focus slipped and it was just a mole again.

"Okay," she said, and her voice scraped a little.

She rubbed the spot until the skin went red, but the mole held. It sat in her face like it had been waiting there forever. She checked the other side of her face. Nothing else had moved. Her teeth were the same crowded teeth, her eyelashes the same pale at the tips, her jaw the same soft unresolved angle that she hated and had learned to hate quietly.

On the way back through the living room, she picked up her mug, put it down, picked it up again. She sat back in her chair. The green bar still hummed.

She moved the mouse. The character select screen loaded: her main healer, long silver braid, the armor she had grinded three weeks for. And at the bottom of the quest log, in letters that had not been there before, a title.

*The Weight of Inventory*

She clicked it.

`QUEST ▸ ACCEPTED`

`Requirements: Carry no less than 6,842 lbs of inventory. Do not discard, trade, or sell any item, of any quality, for the duration of the quest.`

`Objective: Walk to the Sorrowgate in full burden.`

`Reward: [REDACTED]`

She knew her inventory weight by heart the way some people know their cholesterol: it was fourteen pounds lower than that. She had junk in there from three expansions ago, cracked onyx fragments, a thousand copper nails, forty-seven necklaces that had dropped and never sold because she could not be bothered to open the auction house. She sat forward. She opened her bag and felt an unfamiliar, queer tenderness for the hoard she had been dragging around like a snail's house for sixteen months.

She did not sell the copper nails. She rode her flight path, encumbered, at a crawl, drinking the whole thing slowly like medicine.

The next morning, between alphabetizing the paperback fiction returns, she looked up her stream stats on the phone. The VOD from two a.m. had 212 views. The clip with the hidden quest in it—one random minute, no caption, no thumbnail—had nine hundred. She put the phone in her apron pocket and ate a protein bar she didn't taste. It didn't mean anything. Nine hundred was a rounding error. The game had a bug. She clocked out and went home and sat in front of the PC with the green bar humming in the corner of her screen, and she queued for another match.

At 05:31 the system delivered a second deposit.

The gray morning light came in through the one window she owned. She went to the kitchen for water, because her mouth was dry, and she avoided the bathroom mirror completely. She did not want to know what B- looked like. She filled the glass, drank it standing up, and on the way back the dark screen of her phone showed her the shape of her own collarbone, a new shadow under it, a hollow that had been smooth the day before. She looked away. The corridor was short. There was nowhere else to put her eyes.

The second quest was stranger: a tavern in the drowned district, a door that had never opened in two hundred hours of play, now standing ajar. She walked through it. Behind the door, the floor was darker, the wrong kind of black, and a single window at the far end let in a square of light that did not belong to any moon or sun the game had. She took three screenshots. She whispered, "That's not in the map files."

Her stream was growing. Forty-three watchers by the time she went to work. The chat had gone from one an hour to a coiling, darting current: *what is that window,* *turn around,* *go back,* *where are you,* *nora what is that.* She fed them small dry jokes, calling the window Marcellus, and something in the back of her skull hummed along with the green bar, a new and useful engine.

She stopped checking the mirror. She checked the game instead. The quest chain deepened. The inventory title demanded she keep every piece of trash she picked up, and she complied, and the weight of her hoard climbed like a fundraising thermometer, and the Sorrowgate, when she reached it at week's end, was open.

She had expected a gate. The road simply ended in a shore of black sand and a sea that moved wrong, in slabs, like a sleeping thing turning over.

The quest text ran:

`You have carried everything. Now carry the one thing you will not need.`

`Reward: The Weight of Carrying (title)`

The title installed itself at the top of her nameplate. Her stream chat lost its collective mind. The clip hit forty thousand views in three days. Somewhere in the algorithm, a door she had never known existed was also ajar.

On the eighth night, after a match she had won without noticing, she went to the bathroom because she could not put it off any longer. The light was still the color of a bandage. She looked at her own face the way a stranger would: expectantly, without apology.

The mole was still there, under her eye, star-shaped now in the direct light of the bulb. Her face had narrowed. A certain softness under the chin had gone back to somewhere it had been hiding, leaving a jawline she had only ever seen on girls in advertisements, drawn in light and erased. Her lashes had gotten longer; she could feel them on her upper lid when she blinked. She looked serious, almost. She looked like someone who had twenty thousand followers on a video site and a quest chain no one else on the server could complete.

She said, "Oh," and then she said it again, quieter.

The green status bar had a new message waiting.

She stood in the small bandaged light, breathing through her mouth. Her reflection looked back at her, patient. Waiting for her to decide.

From the other room, her PC made the small sound a client makes when a queue pops. Not a notification. A question.

She answered.

When she sat back down, her fingers found the keys before she did, a rhythm older than habit. The black screen of the monitor caught her face, outlined in the blue of the room, and she watched it for a moment—the shape in the glass, the star she had drawn and wiped off and then lost sixteen years.

She put on the headset and queued again. Under the desk, the green bar's hum was the only thing in the apartment that sounded alive at that hour. It ran through her, a low current.

In the game, her avatar stood on the black shore, silver braid lifting in a wind that had no origin in weather or map. She pressed W.

The sea turned over, dreaming, and the screen filled with light.
