I woke one morning and reached for the notebook where I always kept my daily schedule. It had become a habit so ordinary that I never questioned it. Every morning seemed destined to resemble the one before it. I believed that this day, too, would pass quietly, carrying nothing more remarkable than the familiar rhythm of home. I had no way of knowing that it would become the morning that divided my life into two separate worlds—the life before that dawn, and everything that came after it.

Just before dawn, I stepped outside. The air was cool, carrying the faint scent of damp earth left behind by the night. The entire neighborhood was wrapped in silence, the kind that belongs only to the final moments before sunrise, when even the birds have not yet begun to sing. The houses stood motionless beneath the fading darkness, and the streets looked almost peaceful.

Then I heard someone calling my name.

At first the voice seemed impossibly distant, as though it belonged to a dream rather than reality. I paused, wondering whether I had imagined it. A moment later it came again, louder this time, drifting through the stillness until there could be no mistake.

Someone was calling me.

I lifted my head and looked toward the rooftop.

There stood my sister, Grace, at the top of the staircase, her figure outlined against the pale light of dawn. Even from where I stood, I could see something unusual in her posture. She wasn't smiling. She wasn't waving. She simply looked at me with unusual urgency.

"Wake everyone," she called.

There was something in her voice that made me obey before asking any questions.

I hurried through the house, knocking gently on doors, calling my brothers and sisters one after another. None of us understood why we were suddenly awake before sunrise, yet everyone sensed that something invisible had entered the house before any explanation could.

When I finished, silence settled over us.

Not the comfortable silence of an ordinary morning...

but the heavy silence of people waiting for words they already fear.

A few moments later Grace rushed downstairs.

Her breathing was uneven, as though she had run much farther than a single flight of stairs. Her face had lost its color, and when she tried to speak, the words seemed reluctant to leave her lips.

"There are soldiers everywhere," she whispered.

She swallowed before finishing the sentence.

"All over the neighborhood."

For one brief heartbeat...

my own heart seemed to stop.

I stared at her, unable to understand.

"Why?" I asked.

"How?"

Neither of us had an answer.

Soldiers were not entirely unfamiliar to us. We had seen them before, spoken about them before, watched them come and go as though they belonged to another reality that occasionally brushed against ours.

But this morning felt different.

The atmosphere itself had changed.

The air felt heavier.

Even the silence carried fear.

It no longer felt like another ordinary visit.

It felt like the beginning of something we could neither stop nor escape.

Perhaps...

it was the first day of the end.

Outside, we began hearing doors being struck one after another.

Heavy knocks echoed through the neighborhood.

One house.

Then another.

Every sound sent another wave of anxiety through the walls of our home.

No one spoke.

Even the youngest among us seemed to understand that silence was safer than questions.

Time slowed strangely.

Each minute stretched into what felt like an hour.

Every heartbeat sounded louder than the last.

I found myself listening for footsteps outside our own door, wondering if the next knock would belong to us.

But eventually...

the sounds began moving farther away.

The soldiers continued through the neighborhood until, little by little, everything became quiet again.

Only then did we allow ourselves to breathe.

The morning resumed as though nothing had happened.

My youngest sister, Liana, prepared her schoolbag and left for school, trying to preserve the illusion of an ordinary day. I watched her disappear down the street, wondering how a child could still walk toward school while the entire neighborhood seemed to hold its breath.

Inside the house, however, no one returned to normal.

We spent the entire day talking about what had happened.

Someone remembered the soldier who had spoken harshly to one of the neighbors.

Someone else spoke about the little girl whose frightened cries had echoed through the street.

Each family seemed to have witnessed something different.

Each story sounded only slightly different from the one before it.

Yet together they formed a single truth that none of us wanted to admit.

Something had changed.

And deep inside, although I refused to say it aloud...

I knew nothing would ever feel quite the same again.

بالتأكيد. سأواصل بنفس الأسلوب الأدبي، مع إضافة الوصف والمشاعر دون تغيير الأحداث أو إضافة حبكة جديدة.

The days that followed slipped past us in a silence unlike any silence I had ever known.

It was not peaceful.

It was not comforting.

It was the silence of people waiting for something they could not see, yet somehow knew was coming.

Morning followed morning with unsettling sameness. The sun continued to rise above the mountains as though nothing had changed. Birds still crossed the pale sky. The breeze still carried the familiar scent of dust and olive trees through the neighborhood.

Everything looked ordinary.

Yet nothing truly was.

Every conversation inside the house seemed to end before it had properly begun. Words had become cautious. Even laughter sounded unfamiliar, disappearing almost as soon as it appeared.

It felt as though every member of my family was listening for something beyond the walls.

Waiting.

Always waiting.

Then, one afternoon, another unfamiliar group entered the neighborhood.

This time they weren't soldiers.

Their vehicles moved slowly between the houses, stopping briefly before each one. Men stepped out carrying tools and paperwork, speaking quietly among themselves while moving from home to home.

I watched them through the window.

My brother stood beside me.

"They're from the utility company," he said in a low voice.

"They're removing the neighborhood's water equipment."

No one argued.

No one protested.

People simply watched.

Workers entered each property, disconnected pipes, removed water meters, loaded them into trucks, and continued toward the next house.

House after house.

Street after street.

The sound of metal striking metal echoed through the empty afternoon.

For some reason...

that sound frightened me even more than the soldiers had.

Soldiers eventually leave.

But people do not dismantle a place unless they believe no one will remain to use it.

Once again, silence settled over our home.

There were no questions left to ask.

Words had begun to lose their purpose.

I looked around the room.

One of my sisters quietly wiped tears from her face without realizing anyone had noticed.

Another sat with her arms folded, staring through the window as though refusing to accept what she was seeing.

My mother remained seated for a long time without speaking.

Even my brother, who usually tried to appear strong, looked strangely exhausted.

Yet I...

felt nothing.

Or perhaps I simply hadn't learned how to feel it yet.

That frightened me.

Everyone around me seemed to understand the danger approaching.

Everyone reacted differently.

But I remained suspended somewhere between denial and disbelief.

It was as though my heart refused to acknowledge what my eyes had already witnessed.

Days continued passing.

With each sunrise, another family disappeared from the neighborhood.

One morning a truck stood outside a familiar house.

The next day its windows were empty.

Curtains gone.

Furniture gone.

Children gone.

A few days later another family left.

Then another.

The familiar sounds of daily life slowly vanished.

The cheerful voices that once echoed through the narrow streets became memories.

The laughter of children playing football outside disappeared.

The old shopkeeper who greeted everyone each morning closed his tiny store.

Even the stray cats seemed confused by the sudden quiet.

Every evening I stood beside the same window.

It became part of my routine.

I would rest my hands against the frame and simply watch.

Sometimes I searched for movement.

Sometimes I searched for hope.

Most days...

I found neither.

Only a handful of people still walked the streets.

The sidewalks that had once been crowded now stretched endlessly empty beneath the afternoon sun.

The silence had become so complete that even the sound of footsteps carried across the entire neighborhood.

Our house remained.

The house opposite ours remained.

Everything else seemed to be slowly disappearing.

Sometimes I wondered if I was watching the neighborhood die.

Or if it had already died without anyone realizing it.

I didn't know what emotion I was supposed to feel.

Fear?

Anger?

Sadness?

Disbelief?

Every feeling seemed incomplete.

Every explanation seemed too small for what was happening around us.

There were moments when I wanted to cry.

But no tears came.

I remember that clearly.

Not once.

Not then.

Instead, I simply watched.

Watched another curtain disappear.

Another gate close.

Another family drive away carrying an entire lifetime in the back of a truck.

I often imagined the memories they were leaving behind.

The walls where children had measured their height year after year.

The kitchens filled with old conversations.

The rooftops where families once gathered beneath the stars.

Did memories remain inside empty houses after people left?

Or did they leave together?

I never found an answer.

The days continued moving forward.

Painfully.

Relentlessly.

As though time itself no longer cared whether we were ready.

One evening, just before sunset, my family climbed to the rooftop together.

It had always been our favorite place.

From there we could see almost everything.

The neighborhood stretched below us.

Beyond it stood the mountains that had watched over our childhood for as long as I could remember.

The sky glowed with soft shades of orange and gold, beautiful enough to make someone forget the sorrow beneath it.

We stood quietly along the edge of the roof.

No one spoke at first.

There was nothing left to say.

Instead, we simply looked.

One empty house.

Then another.

I tried to remember who had once lived behind each door.

The family with the cheerful children.

The elderly couple who always watered their flowers before sunset.

The neighbor who loved feeding stray cats.

Faces appeared in my memory more easily than names.

Some homes I could no longer recognize at all.

Their windows stared back at us like empty eyes.

After all those years...

After an entire childhood lived among these streets...

I had never imagined that one day I would struggle to remember who had once filled them with life.
