“What?!” the word burst from Maya and David in unison. They gaped at each other as though the other had just suggested setting the building on fire.

“Or tear each other apart,” David added dryly. “I can't work in an environment where every idea must pass through a three-tier approval committee before it can breathe.”

Pendelton put down his coffee mug and rested his hands flat on the table. His expression grew serious, though a hint of amusement lingered in his eyes. “Two things, my young leaders. First: the client demands a holistic concept. Second: to refine this concept without office distractions, I have reserved the company’s retreat cottage for you starting Monday. For one full week. Just the two of you, the project materials, and nature.”

Maya felt the color drain from her face. “The retreat cottage? You mean the old thatched-roof house on the Hallig? In the Wadden Sea?”

“Precisely,” Pendelton said brightly. “No client calls, no city noise. Just fresh North Sea air and focused collaboration. The client pitch is next Friday. If you return with a world-class presentation, senior partnership awaits you both. If not... well, we will have to restructure our department hierarchy entirely.”
