The dress had looked considerably less dramatic on the hanger. That was my first thought as I stood in front of the narrow mirror in the Belladonna's staff dressing room and studied my reflection. Black fabric fell from thin straps over my shoulders, followed the curve of my waist and continued all the way to the floor. A high slit opened along one leg whenever I moved, revealing a flash of skin before the fabric settled neatly back into place. Apparently, when three of Vespera's most powerful families attended the same gala, even the hotel staff had to look as though they belonged among the guests. I leaned closer to the mirror and checked my makeup one last time: deep wine-red lipstick, smoky eyes, dark hair falling in soft waves around my shoulders. Not bad. More importantly, my hands weren't shaking, and considering the atmosphere downstairs, I decided to count that as a victory.

“Cross? Ballroom in two minutes,” my supervisor called through the half-open door, already disappearing again before I could turn around.

“I’m coming,” I answered, smoothing the dress over my hips one final time. I exhaled slowly and reminded myself that this was still just another shift. An unusually elaborate and probably exhausting one, but in a few hours I would change back into my own clothes, go home, kick off my shoes and transfer another small part of my paycheck into the savings account reserved for the BMW I had been obsessing over for months. That was my life: work, coffee, sketching, motorcycles and saving every spare cent for something fast enough to make all of Vespera disappear in the mirrors behind me. Simple. Predictable. Mine.

The Belladonna ballroom made simplicity feel like something that belonged to another universe. Crystal chandeliers hung from a vaulted ceiling and scattered warm light over polished marble, white linen and enough diamonds to finance a small country. A string quartet played near the enormous windows overlooking the city, its music floating beneath hundreds of carefully measured conversations. Beyond the glass, Vespera climbed the hills surrounding the harbor, old stone buildings glowing gold against the darkness while church towers and modern glass offices shared the skyline. From up here, the city looked beautiful, wealthy and almost peaceful. But anyone who had lived here long enough knew there was another Vespera beneath the pretty one—a city of private clubs, back rooms, favors, debts and businesses that never appeared on official balance sheets.

Tonight, both versions of Vespera had gathered beneath the same chandeliers. Politicians shook hands with businessmen, judges drank champagne beside industrialists, and people smiled warmly at men they would probably have crossed the street to avoid anywhere else. Somewhere among them were members of the Moretti, Volkov and De Luca families, three dynasties that controlled more of the city than anyone openly admitted. Their legitimate businesses reached into construction, shipping, hotels and finance; their less legitimate interests were discussed only behind closed doors. The three families had been rivals for generations, held together by fragile agreements and the simple understanding that open war was expensive and bad for business. And for reasons I still didn't entirely understand, the heirs to all three families already knew my name.

I picked up a tray and stepped into the ballroom, repeating the same instructions to myself that had gotten me through countless shifts before. Work. Smile. Carry drinks. Stay out of trouble. Get paid. It should have been easy. Then I felt someone watching me. No—three people. The sensation settled across my skin before I even found them.

Lorenzo was the first. He stood near the marble fireplace, talking to a senator old enough to be his father, one hand resting casually in his pocket while the other held an untouched glass of whiskey. His dark tuxedo was immaculate, as was everything else about him. Lorenzo Moretti seemed incapable of accidental movement; his posture, his expressions and even his silences felt deliberate. The senator was still speaking when Lorenzo's eyes moved past him and found mine across the ballroom. He didn't smile or acknowledge me in any obvious way. He simply held my gaze for two slow heartbeats before calmly returning his attention to the conversation. My stomach did something irritating, so I looked away—and immediately found Maksim.

Maksim Volkov leaned near the main entrance in a black suit that did absolutely nothing to make him look less dangerous. If anything, formal clothing only emphasized how much he didn't belong in it. He looked like someone had dragged him out of a garage, taken away his leather jacket and threatened him into wearing a tie. Unlike Lorenzo, Maksim made no attempt at subtlety. His gaze traveled from my shoulders to my waist, lingered briefly where the slit exposed my leg, continued down to my heels and then slowly returned to my face. I raised an eyebrow at him. Maksim's mouth twitched into the beginning of a smirk, and he looked completely unapologetic. Asshole.

Adrian was at the bar. Of course he was. He held a whiskey in one hand, his suit flawless, his dark-framed glasses catching the chandelier light when he turned toward me. The instant he recognized me, a small, knowing smile appeared on his face. There was no shameless inspection like Maksim's and none of Lorenzo's unreadable intensity. Adrian De Luca simply looked at me as though we'd arranged to meet here and I'd arrived exactly when expected. He lifted his glass slightly in greeting. I shook my head at him and continued walking, trying not to think about the absurdity of it. Three men. Three rival families. Three completely different kinds of trouble.

For the next hour, I tried to forget all three of them existed. It didn't work. The ballroom settled into the repetitive rhythm of a long shift—empty glasses, fresh champagne, polite smiles and guests asking questions they didn't really care about. Men wearing watches worth more than my yearly salary complained about trivial inconveniences, while women in couture dresses kissed cheeks and complimented people they clearly despised. Normal rich-people behavior. I might even have relaxed if I hadn't kept feeling those three pairs of eyes. Once, while collecting glasses near the fireplace, I looked up and found Lorenzo watching me over the shoulder of a man speaking to him. Neither of us looked away immediately. Later, I passed Maksim near the balcony doors and caught him watching me again.

“You're staring,” I muttered as I walked past him, keeping my eyes on the glasses balanced across my tray.

“So are you,” Maksim replied in his rough voice, one corner of his mouth lifting as he glanced at me.

I turned my head to give him a look, but he had already shifted his attention toward the ballroom as though the exchange had never happened. I hated that I nearly smiled. Adrian was worse because he barely had to do anything at all. He simply appeared in different parts of the room, always talking to someone, always listening, and somehow always seeming to know exactly where I was.

By eleven, my feet hurt. By midnight, I had silently imagined throwing three different guests through the ballroom windows. The fourth one gave me an actual reason.

“Come on. Just one dance,” a man in his forties insisted as he stepped into my path. His suit was expensive, his cheeks flushed, and the wedding ring on his hand caught the light as he reached toward me. Enough whiskey hung on his breath to disinfect half the hotel.

“I'm working, sir,” I replied, giving him the same professional smile I'd already used several hundred times that evening as I tried to step around him.

“One dance,” he repeated, moving with me and blocking my way again.

“No, thank you,” I said more firmly this time, but before I could pass him, his hand closed around my wrist.

My entire body went still. His fingers were warm and slightly damp, tightening just enough to make the gesture unmistakable. I looked down at his hand before slowly raising my eyes to his face. “Let go,” I told him, and there was no customer-service smile left in my voice.

“Don't be like that,” the man said with a drunken grin, apparently mistaking my restraint for uncertainty.

“I said no,” I repeated, pulling against his grip.

For a moment, he seemed amused. Then his eyes shifted past me and the amusement disappeared so quickly it was almost comical. His fingers loosened around my wrist.

“She said no,” Adrian said from somewhere behind me, his voice so calm and polite that it took a second for the threat beneath it to register.

I turned and discovered that all three of them had somehow appeared without my noticing. Lorenzo stood several feet behind the man, one hand still in his pocket and absolutely nothing visible in his expression. Somehow, that made him the most intimidating of them. Maksim was beside me, close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from him, his hands buried in his pockets while a muscle worked violently in his jaw. Adrian stood slightly farther back, adjusting one cuff beneath his jacket. The courteous smile remained on his face, but behind his glasses his eyes had gone cold.

“I—I didn't mean anything,” the man stammered as his hand dropped completely from my wrist and he glanced nervously between them.

“Of course not,” Adrian replied mildly, raising his whiskey glass to his lips without taking his eyes off him.

Maksim looked down at the hand that had touched me, and for one uncomfortable second I had the distinct impression he was calculating exactly how many bones it contained. The man apparently had the same thought because he turned toward Lorenzo instead. That was probably a mistake.

“You were leaving,” Lorenzo said quietly, his expression never changing.

Four words. No raised voice, no explicit threat, nothing hotel security could object to. The man nodded anyway. Actually nodded. Then he turned and disappeared into the crowd so quickly he nearly walked into a waiter.

“Well,” I murmured, watching him retreat while rubbing my wrist with my free hand. “That was dramatic.”

“You okay?” Maksim asked immediately, shifting closer as his gaze dropped to the faint red marks already appearing on my skin.

“I'm fine,” I assured him, but Lorenzo had noticed the marks too. He stepped toward me, his eyes fixed on my wrist.

“Did he hurt you?” Lorenzo asked, his voice quieter now.

“No,” I answered automatically.

“Kik,” he said, and something in the way he used my name made me look up.

There was no anger directed at me and no accusation in his face, only a quiet seriousness that made dismissing the question harder than it should have been. “No,” I repeated more softly, lowering my hand. “Really. He didn't hurt me. He was just being an idiot.”

“Some people don't understand courtesy until it's translated into a language they're capable of understanding,” Adrian remarked as he straightened his jacket, the pleasant smile slowly returning to his face.

“Was that the polite version?” I asked, glancing toward him.

“Yes,” Adrian replied smoothly, adjusting his glasses with one finger.

“And the impolite one?”

“He wouldn't have hands,” Maksim answered before Adrian could speak, his expression so completely serious that I stared at him.

Adrian sighed and looked toward the ceiling. “And that would be why Maksim is rarely responsible for diplomacy.”

“I get results,” Maksim muttered, finally taking his eyes off my wrist.

“You create paperwork,” Adrian corrected him.

A laugh escaped me before I could stop it, breaking the tension enough that I finally managed a proper breath. “Thank you,” I said, looking between all three men. “Seriously. But I'm okay.”

Lorenzo still didn't look entirely convinced. Around us, the gala continued as though nothing had happened. Couples danced beneath the chandeliers, glasses clinked, laughter rose above the music. Maybe nobody had noticed. Or maybe everyone in Vespera had learned that when men named Moretti, Volkov and De Luca gathered around something, staring was rarely a healthy habit.

“When does your shift end?” Lorenzo asked after a moment, his attention remaining on me.

“Why?” I replied suspiciously.

“What time, Kik?” he repeated, ignoring the question.

“One.”

“One of us will take you home,” Lorenzo said, his tone making the statement sound far less optional than it should have.

I blinked at him. “That sounded suspiciously like an order.”

“It was a suggestion,” he replied calmly.

“No, it wasn't,” I said, and something amused flickered behind Adrian's glasses as I shifted the tray against my hip. “It's very nice of you, but unnecessary. I go home alone every night.”

“Tonight isn't every night,” Maksim pointed out, folding his arms across his chest.

“That sounded ominous,” I told him.

“It wasn't supposed to,” Maksim said with a slight frown.

“That makes it worse.”

Adrian hid a smile behind his whiskey glass while Lorenzo remained infuriatingly composed. “Think about it,” he said.

“I already did.”

“Think longer,” Lorenzo replied, and for several seconds we simply stared at each other before he finally stepped back. “We'll still be here when your shift ends.”

He returned toward the fireplace before I could answer. Maksim stayed for another moment, his expression turning more serious as he glanced once more at my wrist. “He's annoying, but he's not wrong,” he said quietly.

“Don't start,” I warned him.

“Wasn't planning to.” Maksim pushed his hands into his pockets and gave me one last look. “Just think about it.”

Then he left too, which naturally meant Adrian was the last one standing there. He inclined his head with exaggerated elegance and smiled. “Good evening, Miss Cross.”

“Go away, Adrian,” I said, fighting another smile.

“As you wish,” Adrian replied, his eyes bright with amusement behind his glasses before he turned and strolled back toward the bar.

I watched him leave, then looked down at the champagne glasses on my tray. “What the hell is happening to my life?” I muttered under my breath. The champagne offered no useful answer.

By one o'clock, most of the guests had left. Staff moved quietly between the tables, collecting glasses and extinguishing candles while the last music of the night drifted through the nearly empty ballroom. My feet were begging for mercy when I finally placed my tray on the service station and exhaled. Done. My bed was calling, so was a hot shower, and if I never saw another champagne flute again, I could have lived happily with that.

“Miss Cross,” a deep voice said behind me.

I closed my eyes for half a second before turning. Lorenzo stood several feet away, alone this time. No senator, no whiskey and no entourage. Just him beneath the warm chandelier light, still looking irritatingly immaculate after spending hours in a room full of people.

“You're still here,” I observed, reaching down to adjust the fabric of my dress.

“So are you,” Lorenzo replied as he approached.

“I work here,” I reminded him, raising an eyebrow.

“And I said I'd wait,” he answered simply.

Right. I glanced toward the entrance before looking back at him. “No Maksim?”

“Outside,” Lorenzo said, following my glance.

“Adrian?”

“Somewhere he believes nobody notices him,” Lorenzo replied, and the corner of his mouth moved slightly.

“That sounds like Adrian,” I admitted with a quiet laugh.

Lorenzo stopped in front of me. “Earlier tonight, I asked you to dance,” he reminded me.

“You did,” I replied, watching him cautiously.

“You refused because you were working.”

“I did that too.”

Without another word, Lorenzo extended his hand toward me. There was no demand in the gesture and no attempt to touch me before I chose to move. His hand simply remained there between us, steady and patient. Somehow, patience suited Lorenzo more dangerously than aggression ever could.

“Are you still working?” he asked, his dark eyes remaining on mine.

I looked past him. The ballroom was almost empty now. A few guests remained near the bar, the staff had retreated toward the edges of the room, and a slow waltz still played beneath the fading noise. Every sensible part of me said I should collect my bag and go home. Instead, I looked back into his eyes.

“No,” I admitted. “I'm not.”

“Good,” Lorenzo murmured, and that tiny almost-smile appeared again. His hand remained extended. “One dance, Miss Cross.”

“Just one?” I asked, narrowing my eyes slightly.

“Just one,” he promised.

I didn't entirely believe him, but I placed my hand in his anyway.

His fingers closed around mine, warm and firm, and his other hand settled carefully at my waist before he guided me toward the center of the dance floor. Lorenzo danced exactly the way he seemed to do everything else—with complete control. He never pulled too hard or moved too quickly; he simply guided, and within moments I stopped consciously thinking about where my feet were supposed to go.

“Relax,” Lorenzo murmured as he turned us slowly beneath the chandeliers.

“I am relaxed,” I protested, looking up at him.

“You're counting your steps,” he said, amusement warming his otherwise controlled voice.

I frowned. “How do you know that?”

“Your lips move slightly every fourth beat,” Lorenzo explained, his eyes briefly dropping to my mouth.

I immediately stopped.

His smile deepened.

“You're annoying,” I muttered.

“I've been told,” he replied as he guided me into another turn.

“Frequently?”

“Tonight especially.”

I laughed under my breath, and something in his expression softened. For a few moments, with the chandeliers moving above us and the ballroom nearly empty, he didn't seem like Lorenzo Moretti, heir to one of the most feared families in Vespera. He was simply a man dancing with me after my shift. Then his eyes settled on mine again, dark and unreadable, and the illusion disappeared. There was too much behind that gaze. Too much I didn't know.

Over Lorenzo's shoulder, I noticed Adrian at the bar. His whiskey glass rested forgotten in one hand, his glasses reflecting the warm light while he watched us without his usual amused expression. Maksim stood near the entrance with his arms folded, his gaze fixed just as firmly on me. Three men who should have hated one another. Three heirs to families that had spent years circling each other like predators. And somehow, I stood in the middle of them.

Lorenzo followed my glance and noticed both men immediately. Of course he did.

“Does that bother you?” I asked as we continued moving.

“What?” Lorenzo asked, though I suspected he already knew.

“Them watching,” I replied, tilting my head slightly toward Adrian and Maksim.

“No,” Lorenzo said without looking away from me.

“Why?”

His hand shifted almost imperceptibly at my waist. “Should it?”

I didn't have an answer.

The music softened around us until our movements slowed and eventually stopped. Lorenzo's hand remained at my waist, mine still rested in his, and neither of us stepped away. I could hear my own breathing in the sudden quiet. His thumb shifted once against the fabric at my back, barely a movement at all, yet warmth spread beneath my skin as though he'd done something far more intimate. For the first time that night, Lorenzo seemed almost uncertain. Not afraid—never that—but waiting. Giving me the choice to move away.

I didn't.

One heartbeat passed, then another. Finally, his fingers loosened around mine.

“Good night, Kik,” Lorenzo said softly.

No Miss Cross this time. Just Kik.

“Good night, Lorenzo,” I replied, and even his first name felt different on my tongue now.

I stepped away. Across the ballroom, Adrian lifted his whiskey glass toward me while Maksim pushed himself away from the wall. Looking at the three of them, I finally understood something that should have frightened me much more than it did. This wasn't about a dance, and it wasn't about three powerful men being unusually polite to the same hotel employee. Something had shifted tonight. I could feel it in Lorenzo's lingering gaze, in Maksim's clenched jaw and in the knowing smile slowly returning to Adrian's face.

Three families. Three men. Three shadows beginning to stretch across a life that, until now, had been beautifully ordinary.

I picked up my bag and headed toward the exit, still believing I could simply walk away from them whenever I wanted.

I didn't know that somewhere else in Vespera, someone had already started watching me.
