The Crimson-Eyed Phantom

On the outskirts of a somber village, where the fog curled in tight, silver ribbons and the trees bristled against the perpetual dusk, there lived a solitary man named Elias. His cottage, crumbling and moss-clad, perched on the edge of a twisted wood known for shadows that moved as if alive. The villagers whispered of oddities at its border—strange rustlings, fleeting shapes, and the feeling of always being watched. But Elias, alone for many years, had long since grown accustomed to such things. Or so he believed.

It began on a night when the wind clawed at the shutters and the hearth spat weak embers. Elias sat hunched over his desk, quill scratching, when there came a tap-tap-tapping at the windowpane. He glanced up, heart thudding. There, silhouetted in the gloom, was the faint outline of a bird—a crow, perhaps, or a raven, impossible to tell. Its eyes glowed two pinpricks of furious red, burning through the murk.

He froze, the quill’s tip blotting ink. The bird tilted its head, and the red eyes flared brighter. Elias shuddered, but when he rose and flung back the curtain, the bird was gone. Only the echo of its gaze lingered, an afterimage against his mind.

From that night on, the bird haunted him. Each evening, as dusk bled into night, he would catch glimpses: a shadow on the roof, claws scratching on the stone, those terrible red eyes peering through the glass. Sometimes he would find black feathers—slick, oily things—on his windowsill, though a search of the grounds revealed nothing.

Elias confided in no one. Who would believe him? He barely believed himself. Yet the sense of being watched, weighed, judged, grew each day. He stopped venturing into the woods. He slept with a lamp burning, its flame guttering in the wind. Still, the bird came.

One morning, desperate, Elias sought counsel from the village priest. The old man listened, nodding gravely but offering no comfort. “Not all things that haunt us are real,” he said. “And not all that is unreal is harmless. Sometimes, the mind breeds monsters to fill the silence. Do not feed them.”

Elias returned home, the words gnawing at him. Was the bird real, or was it a conjuration of his loneliness—a projection of guilt or grief he refused to name? Yet, the evidence felt tangible. He saw the eyes, the feathers, heard the tapping. Was he mad?

That night, he resolved to catch the bird. He set a snare on the windowsill and waited, breathing shallowly, every nerve strung taut. Hours passed. The fire died. Outside, the wind howled. Then—tap, tap, tap.

He lunged, drawing the curtain wide.

Nothing. Only darkness.

But then, in the glass, he caught a reflection: his own face, pale and drawn, and behind him—two burning, red eyes.

He spun, heart a hammer in his chest. The room was empty. The eyes faded, replaced by the dancing afterimage of the lamp’s dying glow.

Elias staggered back. The snare lay undisturbed. On the sill, a single black feather glistened.

He began to unravel. Days blurred into nights, and the bird’s presence grew heavier, an oppressive weight. The villagers, seeing his hollow eyes and trembling hands, muttered of curses, of madness. Elias locked himself away, haunted by the bird that would not leave—a bird no one else could see.

And all the while, the bird remained just out of reach, a phantom at the edge of sight. Its red eyes haunted his dreams and waking moments alike, promising nothing but dread.

One final night, as the storm raged and thunder rattled the little cottage, Elias stood before the window, fists clenched. “Show yourself!” he cried. “What do you want from me?”

Lightning split the sky, and for a heartbeat, the bird appeared—enormous, wings unfurled, eyes twin fires. But as Elias blinked, it vanished, leaving only a chill, and the echo of a wicked caw.

The next morning, the cottage was empty. The villagers found black feathers drifting through the open door, and a silence heavier than grief.

Some say Elias followed the bird into the woods and was never seen again. Others whisper that the bird was never real at all, but the shadow of something darker that lived within Elias, red-eyed and waiting.

But on stormy nights, when the wind howls and the trees bend low, there are those who see two red eyes glimmering at the edge of the woods, watching, always watching.

And they remember Elias, and the evil bird that was, perhaps, only ever a ghost in the mind, or perhaps, something far worse.
