The apartment smelled like someone else's perfume.

Rory noticed it the moment she stepped through the door—a sweet, floral note that didn't belong to her, didn't belong to the space she'd decorated with such care over the past two years. She'd returned from her business trip two days early, a small brown paper bag of Dorian's favorite pastries still warm in her hand. A surprise. A kindness. A mistake.

She set the bag down on the entryway console, her fingers brushing against the cool marble. The living room was dim, lit only by the city glow bleeding through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Everything looked normal. The throw pillows were perfectly angled. The coffee table held last week's architectural digest. But the bedroom door was slightly ajar, and the perfume—that nauseating sweetness—clung to the air like a second skin.

Rory walked toward the sound.

Her heels made no noise on the carpet, which felt intentional, as though even the universe was holding its breath. Then she heard it. A low moan. A man's voice, rough and breathless. A woman's laugh, high and triumphant.

Rory pushed the door open.

The scene unfolded in slow, deliberate frames, each worse than the last. Dorian on top of someone, his pale back slick with sweat, his hips moving with a rhythm she recognized intimately. The woman beneath him had red hair—familiar red hair, the same shade Rory had watched being brushed a hundred times at the vanity in their shared childhood home. Sera's face tilted up, her eyes finding Rory's in the doorway with a look so deliberate, so knowing, it might have been choreographed.

Sera smiled.

Not a guilty flinch. Not a look of shame. A smile. Slow and wide, like a cat who'd finally caught the mouse it had been stalking.

"Rory," Dorian gasped, scrambling backward. The sheets tangled around his waist, leaving his pale chest exposed and heaving. "Shit. Shit. This isn't—I can explain—"

Rory didn't say anything. She leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, and watched the two of them flail. Sera made no move to cover herself, only shifted onto her elbows, letting the sheet pool at her waist, letting the evidence of what they'd done hang in the air like a confession.

"Explain what?" Rory's voice came out calm. Too calm. The kind of calm that had taken years to cultivate, years of swallowing her own voice while the Sterling family dictated every moment of her life. "That you're fucking my sister in the bed I picked out? On the sheets I bought with my own money? In the apartment whose mortgage I pay?"

Dorian opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again. He looked like a fish gasping for air. Sera, for her part, finally deigned to cover herself, but only slowly, languidly, like she had all the time in the world.

"Rory," Sera said, her voice dripping with false sympathy, "I'm so sorry. We didn't mean for you to find out like this. But we're in love. It just happened."

The words hit Rory somewhere in her chest, but they didn't land the way Sera wanted them to. No tears. No shaking. No screaming. Just a cold, sharp clarity that cut through everything else.

"Let me get this straight," Rory said, pushing off the doorframe. She stepped further into the room. The bedroom. Her bedroom. "You're in love. So you chose my apartment, my bed, and my fiancé to express that love. Did you borrow my lingerie too, or did you draw the line somewhere?"

Sera's smile flickered. Just slightly. But Rory saw it.

Dorian finally found his voice. "You never let me touch you, Rory. You've been keeping me at arm's length for two years. You think I didn't notice? You think I didn't realize you were just using me to escape the Sterlings? At least Sera is a real woman. At least she wants me."

The words hung in the air between them, heavy and absurd. Rory almost laughed. Two years of partnership, two years of building a business together, two years of pretending they were building a life—and this was the explanation he offered. She was too cold. Too distant. Too unavailable.

She'd been waiting for him to leave her first. She'd been waiting for the perfect excuse to sever all ties to the Sterling family's influence. And there it was, naked and panting in her bed, wrapped around her sister.

"I'm using you?" Rory repeated. She pulled her engagement ring off her finger. The diamond caught the dim light as she held it up. "Dorian, I funded your company's expansion. I negotiated your last three contracts. I did your taxes, for God's sake. The only thing you ever gave me was a ring and a promise to be a shield against my family, and you can't even keep that."

She threw the ring. It hit his cheek, bounced off, and landed somewhere on the floor. Dorian flinched like she'd slapped him, which, in a way, she had.

Sera scrambled off the bed, clutching the sheet. "You don't need to be cruel. We were going to tell you. We just needed the right moment."

"The right moment?" Rory laughed. The sound surprised even her. It was hollow and sharp, like a blade being drawn. "You were going to tell me at the wedding? Maybe during the honeymoon? Or were you planning to keep this going indefinitely and hope I'd just—what? Not notice?"

She turned her back on them. The most powerful dismissal she could offer. She walked to the closet, pulled out the carry-on she'd been too tired to unpack after her flight, and began methodically tossing things into it. She didn't need much. The sentimental things—a photograph of her grandmother Tilly, a small journal, the blue silk scarf her mother had left behind. Everything else could rot.

"Rory," Dorian called after her. His voice had shifted from defensive to pleading. He knew her well enough to understand what this silence meant. It was the sound of a door closing forever. "Wait. Please. Let's talk about this."

"What's there to talk about?" Rory zipped her bag and slung it over her shoulder. "You've already said everything that matters. You're in love. She's a real woman. I'm a liability you've finally found a better excuse to drop."

She walked toward the bedroom door, Sera and Dorian both frozen in the middle of the mess they'd made. Sera's face had lost its smugness now, replaced by something that looked almost like fear. Not of losing Dorian. No, Sera had never wanted him for himself. She'd wanted him because he was Rory's. Because taking something that belonged to her sister was the only currency she understood.

"Give your mother my best," Rory said, not looking back. "Tell her her daughter is exactly what she raised her to be."

She walked out of the apartment. Out of the life she'd been pretending to build. Out of the cage she'd been constructing for herself under the guise of freedom.

The elevator doors slid shut and she looked at her reflection in the chrome panels. No tears. Not yet. She'd learned that skill in childhood, shoving every painful feeling down so far that it became a stone in her chest. She'd cry later, in private, where no one could weaponize her vulnerability.

The taxi was already waiting outside. It was almost as though some part of her had known she'd need to leave in a hurry. She gave the driver a neutral address, an intersection that would take her away from everything, and then she finally let herself fall apart.

For thirty seconds, Rory let the tears come.

She pressed her hand against her mouth to muffle the sounds, counting the seconds because counting was the only thing that had ever stopped the panic from swallowing her whole. Her shoulders shook. Her eyes burned. The past two years unraveled in her mind, every moment of her relationship with Dorian now reframed as a setup, every kindness she'd given him reinterpreted as weakness.

Then thirty seconds passed.

She sat up. Wiped her face with the back of her hand. Took a breath. Then another. The weight of the ring was gone from her finger, but she still felt its ghost, a phantom pressure that reminded her of everything she'd just walked away from.

She pulled out her encrypted phone. The one she'd kept hidden from Dorian, from the Sterlings, from everyone who thought they knew her. Her thumbs moved quickly across the screen.

*Initiate Plan B. Liquidate my shares in Dorian's company. All of them. Divert the proceeds to the dormant accounts. Forty-eight hours.*

She pressed send and watched the message disappear into the secure channel. The shares were her safety net, the one asset Dorian hadn't known about because she'd structured the ownership through multiple shell companies. He thought she'd signed her rights away when they'd gotten engaged. He'd been wrong. She'd been preparing to leave him since the first time she'd caught him looking at her sister like she was something worth taking.

The taxi turned a corner and the neon sign of a bar caught her eye. *Venus*. The name burned in pink and blue across the night sky, and something in Rory's chest loosened.

Venus. She'd bought that place two years ago through a front company. It was one of her few true possessions, a piece of real estate that belonged to no one but her and the anonymous shell she'd created to protect her identity. She'd never set foot inside. She'd made it a rule to never visit her investments, to never look too closely at her own empire, because looking meant acknowledging that she had power, and acknowledging power meant someone might try to take it away.

Tonight, she needed to forget who she was.

"Driver," she said, her voice still a little rough from crying, "drop me here."

She paid in cash and stepped out onto the sidewalk. The night air was cool against her tear-stained cheeks. She could feel the ghost of her mascara, the smudged evidence of her thirty-second breakdown. She straightened her shoulders, wiped her face again, and walked toward the door.

Inside, Venus was everything she'd designed it to be. Dark. Intimate. Anonymous. The bar stretched across the back wall, its shelves lined with bottles that caught the low amber light. Music pulsed from a corner speaker, low and bass-heavy, the kind of sound that wrapped around you and made everything else fade away.

Rory took a seat at the end of the bar, where the shadows were thickest. The bartender raised an eyebrow but didn't ask questions. She ordered the strongest whiskey on the menu, and when it arrived, she let it burn its way down her throat.

She was a stranger here. No one knew her face. No one knew her name.

She let herself be anonymous for the first time in years.

---

The man arrived fifteen minutes later. He sat two seats away, a space between them that felt deliberate, like a buffer zone he'd built to keep the world at arm's length. He wore a black half-mask that covered only his eyes and the bridge of his nose, leaving the rest of his face exposed. His suit was immaculate, cut so precisely that it had to be bespoke. His hands were long and elegant, fingers wrapped around a glass of something dark, and the edge of his watch peeked out from beneath his cuff.

Rory noticed all of this without trying. It was a habit she'd cultivated, this way of cataloging everyone in her orbit. A survival mechanism from a childhood spent surrounded by predators.

He didn't look at her. He didn't try to catch her eye or offer a smile. He just sat there, quiet and contained, sipping his drink like he was perfectly content to be alone in a room full of strangers.

It was that stillness that made her approach.

She slid into the seat beside him, close enough to see the faint lines around his eyes, the way his jaw tightened when he noticed her presence. She was drunk enough to be bold, sober enough to remember every word she was about to say.

"Are you here to get drunk," she asked, "or to observe?"

He turned his head. His eyes were dark, almost black, and they fixed on her with an intensity that would have made a less practiced woman look away. Rory held his gaze. She'd been looked at like that before, by men who thought they could see through her, men who thought her silence was submission.

"Observe," he said. His voice was low, a baritone that carried beneath the music like a second rhythm.

"That's a lonely way to spend an evening."

"Loneliness doesn't bother me." He raised his glass slightly, a gesture that could have been mocking or generous. "Are you here to escape, or to find?"

Rory laughed. It was a bitter sound, more whiskey than humor. "Does it matter?"

"Everything matters." He set his glass down and turned fully toward her. His eyes ran over her face, taking in the smudged mascara, the sharp set of her jaw, the tension in her shoulders. "You look like someone who just burned a bridge and realized the ashes are still smoking."

"I look like someone who's been burning bridges her whole life and still hasn't learned to stop."

She met his eyes again. Something shifted in his expression—an acknowledgment, maybe even recognition. Not of her face, not of her name, but of the kind of person she was. Someone who had been hurt enough to stop trusting, but not enough to stop hoping.

"You've been watching me," she said.

"Everyone's watching you. You're too striking not to notice." He paused. "But I'm not watching you the way the others are."

"How are you watching me?"

"I'm trying to figure out what you're running from."

The question hung between them. Rory felt her pulse quicken, but not from fear. It was something else. Something she hadn't felt in a long time. She leaned closer, close enough to see the mask's edge, to see the skin it concealed.

"Are you always this direct?" she asked.

"Only with people I think can handle it."

She reached for her glass, but her hand felt heavy, her limbs thick with whiskey. "I'm not running from anything," she said. "I'm walking away from everything. There's a difference."

"Slow and deliberate destruction. That's worse. That's the kind that leaves nothing behind."

"Is that what you do?" she asked. "Destroy things so thoroughly they can't be rebuilt?"

"No." His mask shifted as his gaze moved over her mouth. "I destroy things that deserve to be destroyed. Then I build something better on the ruin."

The words landed somewhere deep in her chest. She didn't know why. Maybe it was the whiskey. Maybe it was the long flight and the raw anger and the tears she'd only allowed herself to shed for thirty seconds. Maybe it was him, this stranger who saw her clearly without knowing her name.

"Do you want to take me home?" she asked.

The words came out before she could stop them. She didn't take them back. She wasn't the kind of woman who took things back.

He was silent for three seconds. Three long heartbeats that stretched into an eternity. In those seconds, Rory realized that she'd rather be rejected than pitied. She'd rather hear a direct no than a careful maybe.

Then he stood.

His full height was impressive—taller than Dorian, broader in the shoulders. He extended a hand, palm up, not waiting for her to take it.

"Your room," he said, "or mine?"

It wasn't a question. It was a choice.

Rory took his hand. His palm was warm and dry, and his grip was firm enough to make her feel steady for the first time all night. She stood, her legs trembling only slightly, and looked up at him.

"Yours," she said. "I never bring anyone back to my place."

"Smart." He led her toward the exit, his hand still around hers. "You never know who might be waiting for you there."

The night air hit her face as they stepped outside. She saw a black car at the curb, low and sleek, and she knew without asking that this was the kind of man who had things waiting for him. Reservations. Plans. A life that didn't involve drinking alone in bars.

She didn't care. Tonight, she was no one. Tonight, he was no one. They were just two bodies moving through the dark.

In the car, she sat close enough to feel his body heat. She let her eyes fall on his profile, on the sharp line of his jaw, on the small muscle that twitched at his temple. He was thinking about something. Calculating something.

She didn't ask what.

The hotel room was clean and impersonal, the kind of anonymous space that could have been anywhere in the world. He took her hand and led her through the door. The room was dimly lit, moonlight spilling through the uncurtained windows.

Rory turned to face him. She reached for his mask, her fingers brushing the edge.

"I need to see you," she said.

He caught her wrist. "You're drunk."

"I'm sober enough to know what I want."

He released her wrist and lifted the mask himself. Her breath caught as the fabric pulled away, revealing a face that was almost too beautiful to be real. High cheekbones. Dark eyes. A mouth that was carved with precision, the lower lip slightly fuller than the upper.

Something about him struck her as familiar. Not in a way she could name, but in a way that sat at the back of her mind like a half-remembered dream.

"Have we met before?" she asked.

He paused. His expression flickered, just for a second.

"Maybe," he said. "But tonight, you only know the mask."

He kissed her.

The kiss was deep and thorough, like he was memorizing her mouth, like he was cataloging every taste and texture. Rory let herself fall into it, let herself stop thinking for the first time all night. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back, making it clear she wasn't the passive participant in this arrangement.

Then he stopped.

His hands moved to her shoulders, pushing her back just enough to break the kiss. His eyes opened and the heat in them was gone, replaced by something cold. Something sharp.

"Lorraine Sterling," he said.

The sound of her full name hit her like a slap. Every trace of heat vanished from the room. The air between them turned glacial.

"Who are you?" she demanded.

He stepped back and pulled off the rest of his mask.

His face changed. No, it was the same face. But the expression had shifted, the softness that had been there minutes earlier replaced by an unmistakable hatred.

"You shouldn't be here," he said. "And you certainly shouldn't be here to escape your fiancé."

She stepped back, her hand covering her mouth as though she could undo what had just passed between them. "You know me?"

"Everyone knows you." He shook his head, his eyes flicking over her with disgust. "That's the problem. You're the adopted girl who clawed her way up, the fiancée of a man who's been fucking her sister behind her back. And now you're here, in another man's hotel room, doing the same thing."

The words landed like blows. Each one sharper than the last. Anger surged through her, hot and bright.

"You've been stalking me," she said. "How else would you know about my life?"

"Your reputation has been crawling around these circles for years. You don't need to be an expert to know you are a predator."

A predator. The word hung in the air between them, dripping with insult. Rory felt heat flood her cheeks, not from shame, but from the sheer injustice of his accusation.

She had done everything right. She had survived a family that tried to break her. She had earned everything. And this stranger, this man who'd kissed her like he owned her, was looking at her as though she'd walked into the room with the express purpose of corrupting him.

"Get out," she said. Her voice was cold now, colder than she'd ever heard herself speak.

The man looked at her with contempt. "You're the one who walked into my bar and my hotel room. Maybe you should get out."

She grabbed her coat and shoes, shoving her feet into the heels without stopping to lace them properly. She turned to leave, then paused at the door.

"I don't know who you are," she said. "And I don't care. But you don't know anything about me. You don't know who I really am. You don't know what I've survived. And you definitely don't know why I'm here."

The man stood in the middle of the room, watching her go.

"You're right," he said softly. "But I know more than you think."

She didn't pause to ask what he meant. She threw open the door and walked out, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Halfway down the hall, she heard his voice again, too quiet to be intended for her ears.

"I know exactly who you are, Aurora."

But she was already gone.
