The dress weighed fifteen pounds. Scarlett knew this because the designer had told her, proudly, as if weight were a virtue. She stood on the small platform behind the venue's main hall, staring at her own reflection in the three-panel mirror, and she could feel every ounce of it pressing into her shoulders, her ribs, the hollow of her throat. The lace was hand-stitched, the train long enough to require two attendants just to manage the folds, and the bodice had been altered three times to achieve what the stylist called "effortless structure."

Nothing about this felt effortless.

Scarlett watched the makeup artist, a young woman named Priya who had been with her since the first dress fitting, lean in with a lip brush. "Just a little more," Scarlett said. "The light in here washes me out."

Priya hesitated. Her hand paused mid-air, brush hovering. "You've been saying that for the last hour. It looks perfect."

"One more time."

Priya obliged, but her eyes flicked to the phone on the vanity table. The screen was dark now, but Scarlett had turned it face-down five minutes ago, after reading the message. She hadn't told Priya what it said. She hadn't told anyone.

The text was still burned into her retinas: *Vivian's having another episode. I'll be thirty minutes late. I'm sorry.*

Thirty minutes. On the fifth attempt. Five years of planning, five venues, five cakes, five guest lists that had to be revised every time because the date changed, because Dominic had to cancel, because Vivian needed him more than Scarlett needed a wedding.

Scarlett pressed her lips together, feeling the fresh layer of rouge transfer to her teeth. She dabbed it off with a tissue, careful not to smudge the rest. Her hands were steady. They had been steady for five years.

Priya stepped back. "You look beautiful. Seriously. He's going to—"

"He's going to be late," Scarlett said. Her voice came out flat, not bitter. She hadn't meant it to sound like a fact, but it was one.

Priya's mouth opened, then closed. She glanced at the door, at the other assistants hovering with bouquets and veil pins, and said nothing.

Scarlett picked up the phone and turned it over. The message was still there. She scrolled up, past the previous texts from this morning—*Vivian woke up dizzy, I'm running a few minutes behind*, then an hour before that, *She couldn't sleep, I stayed with her until 4 a.m., might need coffee before I drive over*. She scrolled further, past the messages from the fourth wedding attempt: *She's in the hospital again. I can't leave her. You understand.*

She had understood. Every time, she had understood.

Five years ago, the first cancellation—the first real one, the one that should have told her everything—Dominic had called her from the airport. He was already on the tarmac, he said. Vivian had called him crying from the parking lot of the hospital where her mother had died, the same door, the same wing, she couldn't breathe, she needed him. Scarlett had been in her apartment, still in her pajamas, holding the wedding invitation samples she'd picked out the day before. She'd said, "Go. She needs you."

Dominic had said, "You're incredible. I'll make it up to you."

He never did. Not really. He came back two weeks later with a new watch for her and a story about how Vivian had finally agreed to see a specialist. Scarlett had smiled and put the watch in her jewelry box. She still had it. She never wore it.

The second cancellation: Vivian's coagulation numbers "fluctuated dangerously." Dominic canceled the honeymoon—not the wedding, just the trip—and spent the week shuttling Vivian to appointments. Scarlett had planned a quiet dinner for them instead, a consolation, but Dominic fell asleep on her couch at 8 p.m. She covered him with a blanket and ate alone.

The third: Vivian cut her wrist. Shallow, superficial, the doctors said. But Dominic spent the night in the emergency room, holding her hand, and when he finally came home the next morning, he looked so exhausted that Scarlett didn't have the heart to bring up the flowers that had wilted in the reception hall.

The fourth: Vivian told Dominic she didn't want to be "a shadow on your wedding day." Dominic postponed the entire event, telling Scarlett, "Let's wait until she's in a better place." Scarlett had asked, "When will that be?" and Dominic had looked at her like she'd asked something cruel.

Now here she was, fifth attempt, standing in a dress that cost more than most people's cars, staring at a text message that told her she was still, after all of it, the second choice.

The door to the back room opened. Scarlett's assistant, Maya, slipped in with a clipboard and a worried expression. "The florist is asking about the centerpieces. They want to know if they should set up the extra arrangements or hold them in the truck."

Scarlett looked at her reflection again. The lipstick was too bright now. She'd overcorrected. "Tell them to hold."

"For how long?"

"I don't know yet."

Maya nodded slowly, then stepped closer and lowered her voice. "Is everything okay? Dominic's not here yet, and the guests are starting to arrive. The photographer wants to do the first look at noon, but—"

"He'll be here." Scarlett said it automatically. The same script she'd used for five years. "He just texted. Traffic."

It wasn't traffic. It was Vivian. It was always Vivian.

Maya didn't push. She was good at that—knowing when not to push. But her eyes said she knew something was wrong.

Scarlett's phone buzzed again. She looked down.

New message from Dominic: *Vivian's not doing well. I don't want to leave her alone to drive to Windcliff. Can you come too? The three of us can go together, and we'll push the wedding to next week. I know it's a lot to ask, but she needs support right now.*

Not thirty minutes late anymore. Not even a delay. A full postponement. The fifth one.

Scarlett read the message twice. Then she set the phone down, face-up this time, and looked at Priya. "Can you help me out of this?"

Priya blinked. "What?"

"The dress. I need it off."

"But—the ceremony—"

"There's no ceremony today." Scarlett said it evenly, as if she were stating the weather. "Can you help me or not?"

Priya exchanged a glance with Maya, then nodded. She stepped behind Scarlett and began working the tiny buttons along the spine. There were forty-seven of them. Scarlett had counted during the first fitting.

As the bodice loosened, Scarlett breathed deeper than she had all morning. The corset of lace and bone had been holding her ribs in place, her posture rigid, her shoulders back. Now she felt her spine curve slightly, felt the weight settle differently.

She didn't cry. She hadn't cried during any of the previous four cancellations either. She'd learned, early on, that crying didn't change anything. It just made her eyes puffy and gave her a headache, and then Dominic would feel guilty, and she'd end up comforting him for feeling guilty, and nothing would actually change.

She stepped out of the dress, leaving it pooled on the floor like a ghost of something she'd almost become. Priya picked it up carefully, reverently, as if it were still sacred. Scarlett pulled on her own clothes—a simple navy wrap dress, flat shoes, no jewelry—and tucked her phone into her pocket.

"What should I tell the guests?" Maya asked, her voice tight.

"Tell them there's been a delay. I'll handle the rest later." Scarlett grabbed her bag. "I'm going to Windcliff."

"Windcliff? That's three hours away."

"I know. Dominic wants me there." She paused at the door. "He wants all three of us there."

Maya opened her mouth, closed it, then said, "Scarlett, are you sure you're okay?"

Scarlett looked back at the dress on the floor. The train was spread out like a white river, the lace catching the overhead light. She'd chosen it because it was classic, timeless, the kind of dress a woman wore once and passed down to her daughter. She'd imagined herself walking down the aisle in it, imagined Dominic's face when he saw her.

She didn't feel any of that now. She felt tired. Bone-tired, the kind of tired that came from five years of being understanding.

"I'm fine," she said. "I'll be fine."

She walked out of the room without looking back.

---

The car ride was exactly what she expected.

Dominic drove. He always drove, because Vivian didn't like being in the back seat—she got motion sickness, she said. So Scarlett sat behind Dominic, in the rear passenger seat, while Vivian rode shotgun in Dominic's jacket, the sleeves rolled up three times to fit her smaller frame.

"I'm really sorry, Scarlett." Vivian turned in her seat to look back. Her face was pale—probably makeup, but it could have been genuine; Scarlett had stopped trying to guess. "I know I keep ruining things. I just—this morning I woke up and I couldn't move. I felt like my chest was caving in. I had to call Adrian. I didn't know what else to do."

"It's fine." Scarlett said the words without thinking. They came out hollow.

Dominic glanced at her in the rearview mirror. "Thank you for understanding. I know this is—"

"I said it's fine."

Silence. Vivian touched Dominic's arm, a light gesture, and he immediately slowed the car and reached over to feel her forehead. "You're warm," he said.

"I'm okay. Just tired." Vivian smiled weakly. "Scarlett, have you been to Windcliff before? It's really beautiful. Adrian took me there last year when I was at my worst. The air is so clean, it helps me breathe."

Scarlett watched the way Dominic's hand lingered on Vivian's shoulder before he put it back on the wheel. "No," she said. "I haven't been."

"You'd like it. It's quiet. Private." Vivian turned forward again. "Take the second right up ahead."

Dominic turned without hesitation.

Scarlett noted that: the familiarity. Vivian had given directions before, multiple times. She knew the route by heart. And Dominic never questioned it—he just obeyed, the same way he obeyed when Vivian called in the middle of the night or canceled a wedding or demanded his attention at any hour.

Scarlett remembered the time she'd had a fever of 102, three years ago. She'd texted Dominic—she rarely did that, rarely asked for anything—and he'd replied forty minutes later: *Drink water and rest. I'm in a meeting.*

She'd drunk water. She'd rested. She'd gotten better. And when she told him about it weeks later, he'd said, "You should have called. I would have come."

But he didn't. He didn't call either.

"Scarlett?" Vivian's voice pulled her back. "Are you okay back there? You're very quiet."

"I'm thinking." Scarlett met her eyes in the side mirror. Vivian's gaze was sharp, despite the pallor. Sharp and assessing, the way a predator watches prey.

"About what?"

Scarlett didn't answer. She was thinking about the route. About how Vivian had known exactly which turn to take. About how she'd said "Adrian took me" in that proprietary way, as if he belonged to her and Scarlett was just borrowing him.

She was thinking about the five years. The five cancellations. The five times she'd smiled and said *I understand* when what she really meant was *I'm counting*.

The car turned onto a narrow road. Trees closed in on both sides, blocking the sun. The pavement was cracked, uneven, not a road for tourists or weekend getaways.

Scarlett leaned forward. "Where exactly is this place?"

"Just ahead," Vivian said. "There's a private entrance. Adrian knows it."

Dominic nodded. "We've used it before. Quieter."

Scarlett sat back. Something felt wrong—not dramatic, not the kind of wrong that screamed danger. It was quieter than that. A wrongness in her gut, the same one she'd felt the fourth time Dominic canceled. The same one she'd ignored.

She looked at the back of Vivian's head, at the perfect waves of dark hair, at the way Vivian's hand rested casually on Dominic's arm.

*She knows this road too well*, Scarlett thought. *She chose this road.*

And then, ahead, a black SUV pulled across the lane, blocking the road entirely.

Dominic hit the brakes. The car skidded slightly on loose gravel. "What the hell—"

Before he could finish, the rear door flew open. A hand grabbed Scarlett's arm, yanked her out. She hit the ground hard, her knees scraping against stone, and then a cloth was pressed over her mouth.

The last thing she heard, before the world went dark, was Vivian screaming.

But Scarlett had heard Vivian scream before. Five years of it.

And in that moment, through the haze of chemicals and fear, she realized she'd never heard Vivian scream like someone who was truly afraid.

She'd always heard it like someone who knew they'd be heard.

Then nothing.
