The clock above the dish station read 4:03 a.m.

Sera plunged her hands into the gray water for the hundredth time that shift, and the sting was so familiar now that she barely flinched. The bleach solution had eaten through the last layer of skin on her knuckles two weeks ago. Now she worked with raw flesh sealed under strips of beige Band-Aids, the edges curling from constant wetness. She scraped a butter knife against a ceramic plate, watching chunks of congealed gravy sluice into the sink strainer, and tried not to think about how the pinkish-gray water looked exactly like the stuff that came out of the meat grinder when it jammed.

The Red Fox diner had three things going for it: it was open twenty-four hours, it paid in cash, and no one who worked there asked questions. The cook, a man named Earl who smelled like cigarettes and old fryer oil, had hired her on sight six months ago. He didn't ask for ID. He didn't ask where she was from. He just pointed at the stack of bus tubs and said, "You wash, you get forty a shift. You show up late, you get thirty."

She showed up early. Every time.

The diner's back door was propped open with a cinder block to let out the steam, and through the gap she could see the parking lot's single flickering light pole. It buzzed and stuttered like a dying insect, throwing jagged shadows across the cracked asphalt. Every time it cut out—every two or three minutes—her neck would tighten. She'd look up from the sink, hands still submerged, and count the seconds until the light came back on. One. Two. Three. If it went past five, she'd move to the door and check the lot.

It went out three times that hour. Never past four seconds.

She was fine. She was still fine.

A busboy named Leo pushed through the swinging kitchen door with another bin of dirty plates—the late-night trucker crowd had finally cleared out, leaving behind coffee cups with lipstick smears and plates scraped clean except for the crusts of toast. He set the bin on the counter and gave her that look he always gave her, the one that said he'd figured her out and was just waiting for her to admit it.

"Your hands look like shit," he said.

"They work," she said.

"You ever think about gloves?"

"I ever think about your opinion? No."

He laughed, short and flat, and pushed back through the door. She heard him say something to Earl, something she couldn't catch, and Earl's gruff reply: "Leave her alone. She's the only one who stays past two."

That was the thing about the Red Fox. Everyone knew she was running from something, but no one cared enough to ask. In a town like Gritting—population 1,200, most of them related to each other or married to someone who was—a quiet stranger was a blessing. She didn't drink with them after shift. She didn't share stories. She didn't even have a last name on the schedule. Just *Sera*.

Which was not her real name. But it was the one she'd chosen, and after nine years, it felt more real than the other one ever had.

She finished the last plate and pulled the drain plug. The water sucked down with a gurgle that sounded, to her ears, exactly like a man clearing his throat. She flinched. Then she cursed herself for flinching and reached for the spray hose to rinse the sink.

The back door rattled in its frame. Wind. Just wind.

She turned off the sprayer and listened.

Nothing. The diner was quiet now—the last trucker had paid and left ten minutes ago, and Leo was out front wiping down tables. Earl had stepped out for a smoke. Through the pass-through window, she could see the empty red vinyl booths and the jukebox that hadn't worked since 1999.

She dried her hands on a rag that was more grease than cotton and checked the clock again. 4:17. She could clock out in thirteen minutes, walk the nine blocks to her apartment, feed the cat if it showed up, and try to sleep before the sun was fully up.

The cat.

She hadn't meant to let it in. A stray, orange and scruffy, with a torn ear and a habit of sitting on her fire escape like it owned the place. She'd ignored it for two weeks. Then one night—a night when the light pole outside her building had gone out for a full minute and she'd spent that minute pressed against the wall with a butter knife in her hand—the cat had meowed through the window.

She'd opened it. It had jumped in. It had slept on her pillow, purring, and she'd slept too.

She'd named it Cream, because that was the color of the one thing in her life that didn't hurt.

She gathered her things—a thin jacket, her car keys (the car was a 1998 Corolla that died in the cold and screamed in the heat), and a crumpled twenty she'd tucked in her sock. Not her mattress money. That stayed home. That was sacred.

She pushed through the front door of the diner, and the bell above it chimed.

She froze.

The bell was a cheap string of brass wind chimes that the owner had hung there because she thought it looked "rustic." Every time Sera walked through that door, every single time, the hollow clink-clink-clink of metal against metal sent a spike of ice down her spine.

She knew why.

In the Sanctuary of the Forsaken—the name Damien Cross had given his little compound of concrete and prayer and pain—there were chimes on every door. Not for decoration. For warning. So the faithful could hear when someone entered. So the children could learn to stop talking the second they heard the sound.

She had learned.

She stood there, one hand on the doorframe, until the chimes fell silent. Then she breathed out, slow and deliberate, and stepped onto the sidewalk.

The air was cold and wet, the kind of dawn that never really broke, just turned from black to gray. She walked with her head down, hands in her pockets, pace steady but not hurried. She didn't run. Running attracted attention. Running said *I'm afraid of something behind me*. She walked like she belonged exactly where she was, even though every nerve in her body was screaming *wrong way, wrong street, wrong life*.

Her apartment was in a building that had once been a motel. The sign out front still said "MOTEL" with the "E" burnt out, so it read "MOT L." She climbed the exterior staircase to the second floor, key already in hand, and unlocked the door in one fluid motion.

Inside, she locked it. Deadbolt. Chain. The chair she'd wedged under the knob before she left was still there. She slid it back into place.

She didn't turn on the light. She never turned on the light.

She crossed the room in the dark, navigating by memory—three steps to the bed, two to the left to avoid the loose floorboard, one more to the bathroom door. She went in, flicked on the bathroom light (she couldn't shower in the dark, she'd tried, she'd fallen and cracked her elbow), and turned on the water.

She didn't lock the bathroom door. She never locked any door. If she needed to run, she couldn't afford to fumble with a latch.

The shower was quick and utilitarian. She washed the bleach smell off her hands, flinching as the hot water opened the cuts again, and scrubbed her hair with the cheapest shampoo the drugstore sold. She didn't look at herself in the mirror. She never looked. She knew what she'd see—hollow cheeks, shadows under her eyes, and that stillness in her gaze that made people look away.

She dressed in the same clothes she'd slept in the night before, because she only owned two sets, and the second was in the laundry bag she'd been meaning to take to the laundromat for a week.

Then she sat on the edge of her mattress—just a mattress, no frame, no sheets that fit right—and reached under it.

Her hand found the shoebox.

She pulled it out, set it on her lap, and lifted the lid. Inside were stacks of twenties and tens, banded with rubber bands. $3,740. She counted it three times a week. It was all she had, all she'd saved since the day she'd clawed her way out of the compound and run until her feet bled.

She didn't know where she was running to. She just knew she had to keep running. Because Damien Cross had found people before. He'd found them in other states, other names, other lives. He had a network. He had money. He had the kind of patience that came from believing God had given you the right to own souls.

She'd been one of those souls. For nine years.

She closed the box and slid it back under the mattress. Then she lay down, still fully dressed, shoes on, and stared at the ceiling.

The window faced the street. The light pole outside flickered. She watched it, counting.

One. Two. Three. Four.

It stayed on.

She closed her eyes.

She didn't sleep. She never really slept. She dropped into a kind of shallow unconsciousness where every sound registered and every shadow was a threat. But her body, exhausted from twelve hours of scrubbing and lifting and bending, took what it could get.

She woke to a scratch at the window.

She was off the mattress and on her feet before she'd processed the sound, her hand reaching for the butter knife she kept taped to the bedframe. But then she saw the shape through the glass—small, orange, one ear torn—and her heart stuttered back to something like normal.

She opened the window. Cream jumped in, landed on the floor, and immediately began winding between her ankles.

"You're late," she whispered. "I was worried."

The cat meowed, which was not an apology, but she took it as one.

She sat back down on the mattress, and Cream climbed into her lap. She stroked its back, feeling the ridge of its spine and the warmth of its small body. It was the only creature on earth that touched her without wanting something she couldn't give.

"You smell like outside," she said. "Dumpster diving again?"

Cream purred.

She lay back down, the cat on her chest, and watched the window. The sky was turning a dirty orange over the horizon. Another day. Another shift tonight.

She thought about the shoebox. $3,740. Not enough. Not nearly enough. She needed a car that would get her across state lines. She needed a new identity, or at least a new town. She needed—

The chimes.

She heard them. The wind chimes at the diner's front door. She wasn't there. She was in her apartment. But she heard them anyway. She always heard them.

She pressed her palm against her left shoulder blade, under her shirt, where the skin was raised and scarred in the shape of a curled brand. It was the only mark Damien had left that she couldn't hide. The others—the stripes from the whip, the circles from the cigarettes, the thin white lines from the knife—they'd faded to pale whispers on her ribs and thighs. But the brand. The brand was a claim. A proof of ownership.

She'd had it for eight years. She'd had it since the night she'd tried to run the first time, and they'd caught her, and Damien had held her down while the iron pressed into her skin.

She remembered the smell.

She remembered his voice.

*"You belong to me, Sera. You'll always belong to me. The mark is just so you don't forget."*

She hadn't forgotten.

She never would.

Cream shifted, pressing its head under her chin, and she let the weight anchor her. She let the purr fill her ears so she couldn't hear the chimes anymore.

Outside, the light pole flickered.

One. Two. Three.

It went out.

She counted.

One. Two. Three. Four.

Five.

She sat up, Cream falling from her lap with an indignant mew, and moved to the window. She pressed herself against the wall, peering through the slit in the curtain.

The street was empty. The pole was dark. But at the far end of the block, at the corner where her street met the main road, a car sat with its headlights off.

She stared at it.

She stared for a full minute, counting heartbeats instead of seconds. Sixty. The car didn't move. It didn't start. It just sat there, a dark shape in the gray dawn.

She reached for her jacket.

Then the pole's light sputtered back on, and in that sudden glow, she saw the car clearly. It was a pickup truck with a rusted bed and a camper shell. She'd seen it before. It belonged to the man who lived three houses down, the one who ran a lawn care business out of his garage.

She exhaled. Her hands were shaking.

She sat back down on the mattress, and Cream crept back into her lap, forgiving her for the sudden disruption. She stroked its fur and waited for her pulse to slow.

She couldn't keep doing this. The vigilance, the fear, the way her body treated every shadow like a threat. It was exhausting in a way that sleep couldn't fix. But she didn't know how to stop.

She'd learned to survive by being afraid. Fear had kept her alive. Fear had made her small and invisible. Fear had been the only tool she had.

But fear was also the thing that kept her from ever building anything. Fear was why she had no photographs, no journals, no mementos. Fear was why she'd thrown away her old name and buried her past under silence and cheap shampoo and thirty dollars a shift.

Fear was why she was still running, even though she'd already run as far as she could.

Cream licked her thumb.

She looked down at the cat, at its one torn ear and its battered, scruffy face, and thought about how it had walked into her life like it belonged there. No hesitation. No fear.

She wanted to be that.

She didn't know how.

The clock on the nightstand—a digital thing she'd found at a garage sale for two dollars—read 7:34. She had until 10:00 before she needed to get up and do it all over again. She could sleep, if she could call it that. Or she could count her money again. Or she could just sit here, with the cat, and wait for the sun to climb high enough that the chimes in her head would finally go quiet.

She chose the cat.

She lay back down, Cream pressed against her sternum, and stared at the ceiling until the orange light turned yellow and the sounds of Gritting waking up filtered through the thin walls. A dog barking. A truck starting. A woman's voice yelling at a child.

Normal sounds.

Safe sounds.

She closed her eyes and tried to remember what it felt like to not be waiting for the door to break down.

She couldn't remember.

But she could feel the cat breathing. And that was something.

That was enough for now.
