The candles had burned down to nubs.

Clara Vance stood at the kitchen counter, her hands braced against the marble edge, watching the last of the wax pool into a silver puddle. She had lit them at seven—forty-five minutes ago, which felt like a small eternity when you were counting it in melted wax and cooling duck breast.

The duck was ruined. She knew that without checking. The skin would be flabby, the flesh dry, the sauce congealed into something that looked less like a reduction and more like a regret. She had spent three hours on it, following a recipe she'd printed from a French food blog and annotated in the margins with her own notes—*lower heat, add salt earlier, Dominic hates thyme*. That last one made her smile when she wrote it. Now it just made her jaw tight.

She had set the table with the good linen. The ones her mother had sent her from Ireland, cream-colored with a faint embroidered edge that Ruth had done by hand. Clara had always kept them for special occasions. Five years with Dominic, and she'd used them exactly twice. Once when he got his first board seat. Once when she got her first solo architecture commission. Tonight was supposed to be the third.

The fifth anniversary of the night they met.

She pulled the cork from the wine—a Barolo he'd mentioned liking at a restaurant last spring, and she'd remembered because she remembered everything about him, even the things he forgot about her—and poured herself half a glass. She didn't sit. She stood at the window of their apartment, the one that faced the East River, and watched the lights flicker on the bridges.

Her phone sat silent on the counter.

He'd said *I'll be home by six*. That was at seven. Then *Sienna's having a rough night, give me thirty*. That was at seven-thirty. Then *she's really not doing well, I'm taking her to urgent care*. That was at eight.

Now it was eight-fifteen, and the candles were dead, and Clara was still standing in heels that were starting to pinch because she'd worn them for him even though she hated them, and she'd put on the green dress he'd once said made her look like "something out of a painting," and she'd curled her hair the way he liked even though the curl took forty minutes and always fell out by the end of the night anyway.

She was so tired of doing things she didn't want to do for a man who didn't seem to notice the effort.

The phone buzzed.

She didn't look at it immediately. She let it buzz twice, three times, four. Then she walked over slowly, picked it up, and saw his name on the screen.

*Dominic.*

She answered. "Hey."

"Clara." His voice was low, rushed. She could hear background noise—fluorescent hum, distant beeping, the kind of thin air that only existed in hospital corridors. "I'm so sorry. I know I said I'd be there by now."

"You said six."

"I know. I know. But Sienna—" He exhaled. "She's got this thing, they think it might be appendicitis, they're running tests. She's scared. She keeps asking for me."

Clara closed her eyes. The word *keeps* sat in her chest like a stone. *Keeps* meant he'd been there for a while. *Keeps* meant he'd been in that hospital room while she was here, at this table, alone.

"Appendicitis," she repeated. "That's serious."

"It could be. They don't know yet. They're doing a CT."

"Then stay." She said it flatly, not like a gift but like a surrender. "You should stay if it's that serious."

He paused. She could picture the exact shape of his hesitation—the slight tilt of his head, the way he ran his hand over his jaw when he was trying to figure out what she really meant. He'd done that a thousand times. She'd memorized it like she memorized everything about him.

"You sound upset," he said.

"I sound exactly how I feel."

"Clara—"

"Dominic." She opened her eyes. She was looking at the table now, at the two place settings, at the wilted centerpiece she'd arranged herself because he'd forgotten to pick up flowers on his way home. Like he'd forgotten to pick up flowers on Valentine's Day. Like he'd forgotten to pick up her dry cleaning. Like he'd forgotten her mother's birthday. Like he'd forgotten, month after month, that she existed as anything more than the person who waited for him. "It's our anniversary."

"I know. I didn't forget."

"Then what are you doing at a hospital with her?"

"She needed me."

"She always needs you." Clara heard her own voice go thin, the way it did when she was trying not to cry. "Every time. Birthdays, my award ceremony, the night I had the flu and couldn't get out of bed. She always needs you, and I always—" She stopped. Swallowed. "I always wait."

"Clara, that's not fair. Sienna doesn't have anyone else. She's alone. Her parents are overseas, her friends—"

"Her friends are plenty. I've seen her Instagram."

"That's not real life and you know it."

Clara laughed. It came out dry and wrong, like paper tearing. "I know what real life looks like, Dominic. Real life is me standing in my own kitchen with a cold dinner I made for a man who isn't here. Real life is the lights of this apartment that I pay for, the table I set, the years I've spent being understanding and patient and—" She stopped again. She was shaking. She hadn't realized she was shaking until she saw her own hand trembling against the phone. "I can't do this conversation again. You know what? Stay with her. Stay as long as she needs. I'll—" She looked at the table, at the ruin of the meal, at the ruins of five years. "I'll be here. I'm always here."

"Clara. Please don't hang up."

"I'm not hanging up. I'm just—" She pressed her palm to her forehead. "I'm just telling you I understand. So you don't have to come back feeling guilty. You made your choice. I got it."

He was quiet for a long moment. She could hear the hospital PA announce something in the background, garbled and distant.

"I love you," he said finally.

"Then why aren't you here?"

"I told you. She needs—"

"I know." Clara cut him off gently. "She needs you. And I need you to stop telling me that like it's supposed to make me feel better."

The silence stretched. She felt the shape of it, the weight of everything unsaid between them—all the nights she'd swallowed her disappointment, all the birthdays she'd celebrated alone, all the times she'd looked at his face and seen Sienna's shadow over his shoulder.

"Come home when you can," she said. "The food's cold anyway."

She hung up before he could answer.

For a long moment, she stood perfectly still. The kitchen hummed—the refrigerator's low drone, the drip of the faucet she'd been meaning to fix for weeks. The apartment was too quiet. It was always too quiet when he wasn't there, but tonight the quiet felt loud, felt like accusation.

She looked down at her hand.

The ring was still there. Not an engagement ring—they'd never gotten that far, not officially, but he'd given it to her two years ago on Christmas morning, a platinum band with a tiny diamond set into the metal, and he'd said *this is a promise. Not a forever one yet, but a promise that I'm heading that way*. She'd worn it every day since.

Now she looked at it and felt nothing. Not love, not anger, not sadness. Just a dull, hollow recognition that she'd been wearing a promise he'd been breaking for the better part of twenty-four months.

She pulled it off.

It came away easily. Too easily. Like her finger had been waiting for her to do it.

She walked to the bedroom, opened the top drawer of her vanity, and placed the ring inside. Next to it lay a velvet box he'd given her with earrings she never wore, and a concert ticket stub from a show he'd taken her to in the first year—the first year, when he'd still remembered her favorite band, when he'd still remembered anything about her at all.

She closed the drawer.

In the bathroom mirror, she looked at her own face. The makeup was still intact—she'd done it carefully, deliberately, with the precise intention of making him look at her and remember why he'd fallen in love with her in the first place. She'd wanted to look like the woman he'd met at that industry gala five years ago.

The woman he'd seen giving a presentation on "Light and Space." The woman who'd stood in front of a hundred architects and spoken about how buildings should breathe, how they should hold the people inside them without crushing them. He'd come up to her afterward, not as a Sterling heir—she hadn't known he was a Sterling heir then—but as a man with a slightly crooked smile and a glass of champagne in his hand.

*"You said buildings should leave room for people's fragility,"* he'd said. *"That's the most romantic thing I've ever heard an architect say."*

And she'd laughed. She'd actually laughed, because she'd thought he was joking. But he wasn't. He'd stood there, earnest and open, and told her that most people didn't think about architecture that way, and that she was probably the most interesting person in this entire room.

They'd talked until the gala ended. They'd walked along the river and watched the sunrise together. He'd kissed her on a bench near the Brooklyn Bridge, and she'd thought, *this is it. This is the person who sees me.*

Five years later, she was looking at a stranger in the mirror. Same face, same hair, same green dress. But the woman who'd stood on that stage had believed in something. The woman in this mirror just believed in getting through the night without crying.

She reapplied her lipstick.

She didn't know why she did it. Maybe because she was too stubborn to let a cold dinner and a phone call undo her entirely. Maybe because she'd spent so many years being the person who stayed that she'd forgotten how to be the person who left. Maybe because she was still, somewhere deep and stupid inside her, hoping he'd walk through the door.

She went back to the table.

She picked up the wine glass and drank it in one long swallow. The Barolo was good. Of course it was good. She'd spent forty dollars on it and she didn't even like red wine, but he did, and that was the kind of person she was: the kind of person who bought wine she didn't like and cooked food she'd never eaten and wore dresses that pinched, all for a man who couldn't even remember to bring her flowers.

She grabbed her phone and opened her messages.

There was nothing from Dominic. But there was a text from Sienna, sent twenty minutes ago.

It was a photo. Clara clicked it open before she could stop herself.

The photo showed a hospital bed. White sheets, blue curtain, the pale glow of a monitor. And there, in the corner, half in frame, was Dominic's back. He was sitting in a chair next to the bed, leaning forward, his hand resting on the railing. His sleeve was rolled up. Clara could see the watch she'd given him for his birthday—the vintage Omega he'd said he'd always wanted.

The photo was captioned: *"He won't leave my side. What a keeper."*

Clara stared at the screen.

She zoomed in. Not on Dominic—she already knew what he looked like. She zoomed in on the hospital room itself. The clock on the wall. The time read 8:22 PM. The same time she'd been standing in her kitchen, telling him she understood, telling him she'd be there, telling him *I'm always here.*

She zoomed in on his face.

He wasn't looking at Sienna. He wasn't looking at the camera. He was looking at his phone. His jaw was tight, his brow furrowed, and there was something in his expression that looked almost like—guilt.

*Almost.*

Clara set the phone down. Face up. So she could see the message whenever she looked at the table.

She sat down at her place setting.

The duck was cold. She cut a piece anyway, put it in her mouth, and chewed. It was as bad as she'd expected. Dry, tough, the sauce congealed into something gluey. She ate three bites before she couldn't take any more.

Then she sat there, in the green dress and the pinched heels, in the silence of the apartment she'd furnished with his taste in mind—neutral tones, modern lines, nothing too colorful because he said bright colors made him feel anxious—and she thought about the last five years.

The first year had been magic. The second year, easier. The third year, she started noticing the small absences. A missed dinner. A forgotten call. A birthday where he showed up two hours late with a store-bought cake and a look of genuine apology that she'd believed because she wanted to believe it.

The fourth year, he started missing her mother's calls. Started forgetting to ask about her projects. Started saying things like *"you're so strong, Clara, you can handle this"* while he ran off to Sienna's latest crisis.

The fifth year—this year—she'd stopped counting the absences. She'd stopped asking him to stay. She'd stopped believing he'd ever choose her first.

And still, somehow, she'd dressed up and cooked a duck and lit candles like it would be different.

*Fool me once*, she thought. *Fool me forty-seven times, and I'm not a fool anymore. I'm just someone who refuses to see what's in front of her.*

She pushed back from the table.

She walked to the window and looked out at the city. The lights of Manhattan glittered in the distance—cold, indifferent, beautiful. Somewhere out there, people were having dinner with people who loved them. Somewhere out there, someone was laughing, holding hands, feeling seen.

She wasn't jealous of them. She was jealous of the version of herself who'd believed she could have that.

Her phone buzzed again.

She looked down.

Dominic. *"I'm on my way. She's stable. I'll be there in thirty."*

Thirty minutes. He'd be home in thirty minutes, and she'd have to decide whether to greet him at the door or pretend to be asleep, whether to accept his apology or finally tell him the truth—that she was tired of being the strong one, the patient one, the one who understood.

But she didn't feel strong tonight. She felt hollowed out, scraped clean, like she'd been holding everything together for so long that there was nothing left to hold.

She typed a reply: *"Don't rush. I'm going to bed."*

Then she turned off her phone, walked to the bedroom, and took off the green dress.

She hung it back in the closet. Next to the other dresses she'd bought for events he'd missed. Next to the shoes he'd never noticed. Next to the person she'd been trying to be for five years.

She pulled on her oldest sweatshirt—faded, soft, one she'd had since college—and crawled into bed.

She didn't cry. She was too tired for crying. She just lay there, staring at the ceiling, listening to the silence, and wondering when the woman she used to be had disappeared.

When the key turned in the lock at 9:17 PM, she didn't move.

She heard him come in. Heard him pause in the foyer. Heard his footsteps approach the bedroom, stop at the door. He stood there for a long time—she could feel him standing there, could feel the weight of his gaze on her back.

"Clara?" His voice was soft. Careful. The voice of a man who knew he'd done something wrong but didn't quite know how to fix it.

She didn't answer.

"I'm sorry," he said.

She listened.

"I know I screwed up. I should've been there. I should've—" He stopped. Sighed. "Sienna's fine, by the way. It wasn't appendicitis. Just a stomach thing. They sent her home."

Clara closed her eyes.

*Just a stomach thing.*

He'd missed their anniversary for a stomach thing.

"I brought you something," he said. "From that bakery you like. The one with the—" He paused. "The one with the lemon—"

She waited.

"—the blueberry tarts. I think that's the one you mentioned."

She opened her eyes. Stared at the wall.

*Blueberry.* He'd brought her blueberry tarts. Sienna's favorite. The one Sienna always posted about on her stories. The one Sienna had once said was "the only thing that gets me through a bad day."

Clara had never liked blueberry. She'd told him that. She'd told him a hundred times, in a hundred ways, that she loved lemon, loved the sharpness of it, the brightness, the way it cut through sweetness.

But he'd brought her blueberry.

Because he'd never really listened.

She didn't turn around. She just lay there, very still, and said: "Put it in the kitchen."

"Are you okay?"

"I'm fine. I'm just tired."

He hovered. She could feel him hovering. She could feel him wanting to come in, wanting to fix this with a hug or a kiss or the kind of apology that always came too late.

"I love you," he said.

"I know," she said. "I know you do."

He waited a few more seconds. Then he walked away.

She heard him in the kitchen, setting something down. The rustle of a paper bag. The click of the refrigerator opening and closing.

And then, she heard him sit down alone at the table. In the dark. At the place she'd set for him.

He didn't come to bed that night.

She didn't sleep.

At 4:47 AM, when the first gray light started creeping through the curtains, she got up and walked to the kitchen. The blueberry tarts sat on the counter in a white paper box. She picked them up, walked to the trash, and dropped them in.

Then she opened the drawer where she'd put the ring.

She looked at it for a long moment.

Then she closed the drawer, walked back to the bedroom, and lay down again beside the hollow space where he used to sleep.

Tomorrow, she would think about what to do.

Tonight, she just let herself be empty.
