It ran in thin, diluted ribbons between the cobblestones, catching the violent red glow of a broken neon sign above the alley entrance. SAINT LAZARUS flickered against the wet brickwork, half the letters dead, the remaining ones pulsing like a failing heartbeat.

Sera stood beneath the police tape and forgot, for one terrible second, how to breathe.

Adrian lay twenty feet away.

Someone had covered most of him with a dark emergency sheet, but one polished black shoe remained exposed to the rain.

She recognized it.

Adrian hated cheap shoes.

A murder had happened, yet Black Alley continued around it as though death were merely another business open after midnight.

Music throbbed behind the walls of a basement club. Somewhere farther down the street, a woman laughed. A black sedan waited with its engine running beneath an archway. Men beneath umbrellas moved past without once turning their heads toward Adrian.

They were not indifferent.

They were careful.

Sera stepped toward the tape.

Officer Harrow blocked her gently.

“You shouldn’t.”

“That’s my brother.”

“I know.”

“No,” she said. “You know his name.”

Harrow watched her for a moment.

Then he lifted the tape.

Sera walked beneath it.

The rain struck her face, cold enough to feel surgical.

She stopped beside Adrian.

His face looked almost peaceful.

“Where?”

“Chest.”

She looked at Adrian’s coat.

Dark wool. Expensive. Buttoned badly.

Adrian never buttoned a coat badly.

“Was he robbed?”

“Doesn’t look like it.”

His watch remained on his wrist.

Silver case. Black leather strap.

Sera had bought it for him after restoring a nineteenth-century French safe for an eccentric collector who had paid her far too much.

Adrian’s wallet sat inside a transparent evidence pouch on the hood of a patrol car. She could see banknotes through the plastic.

Money untouched.

Watch untouched.

No robbery.

She lowered her gaze.

The rain had saturated Adrian’s shoulders and trousers.

But beneath the lower edge of his coat, near his right hip, the fabric was dry.

“No one decided anything.”

“You said gang execution before I asked.”

Harrow’s jaw tightened.

She had caught him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he moved closer, lowering his voice.

“Miss Vale, whatever your brother was doing here, leave it buried with him.”

No umbrella.

His clothes were too immaculate for the neighborhood and too restrained to be accidental.

Everyone else in Black Alley avoided looking at Adrian.

The stranger looked directly at Sera.

Not at the police.

Not at the body.

At her.

A passing vehicle swept between them, headlights scattering across the rain.

For a moment the stranger’s face appeared.

Sharp lines.

Dark hair.

Stillness where there should have been curiosity or fear.

Then the vehicle passed.

The awning was empty.

Sera stared.

“Who was that?”

Harrow followed her gaze.

“Who?”
