The first thing my husband gave me after the vows was not a kiss.

For one second, something flickered in his eyes.

Then his hand closed around my chin.

He was not gentle, but he did not hurt me. That mattered, though I hated that I noticed. His thumb rested just beneath my lower lip, warm against the powder I had carefully laid over my skin.

"You are here because your father's debts needed a body attached to them," he said.

A useful lie.

Everyone in the room knew the story Adrian had paid for. Elena Vale, orphaned, pretty, desperate, bought into the De Luca family to settle an old account. No past worth discussing. No relatives with enough power to ask questions. No one to mourn her if she disappeared.

It was almost perfect.

His fingers tightened.

The room went quiet in that strange way powerful rooms did. No one gasped. No one moved. They simply listened harder.

"Careful, wife."

The word should have sounded absurd between us. It should have meant nothing. A legal trick. A bloodless contract signed in a private chapel under the De Luca crest.

"Bring the glass," he said.

A waiter appeared at once, holding a silver tray with a single flute of champagne. The liquid inside was pale gold. Pretty. Poison could look pretty too.

Adrian took it and held it down to me.

"Drink," he said. "A toast to obedience."

More laughter.

I took the glass.

My fingers were steady. That always surprised people. They expected shaking hands from women in white dresses surrounded by wolves. They forgot women learned steadiness in places where shaking got them killed.

I lifted the champagne.

"To obedience," I said.

Then I tipped the glass and poured it onto the marble between us.

Gasps this time.

The champagne spread in a bright puddle over the floor, reaching the edge of Adrian's shoe.

His jaw flexed.

Behind him, an older man with silver hair and a thick gold ring laughed under his breath.

His name was Marco Bellini, one of the family elders. I knew his face from the files I had spent three years building. He liked girls who looked scared. He liked them young. He liked them indebted.

He stepped toward me.

Adrian did not move.

Marco crouched, smelling of cigar smoke and old cologne. He reached for the veil that had slipped over my shoulder.

"No need to waste a wife with spirit, Adrian. Let us teach her properly."

His fingers brushed the lace near my collarbone.

I did not flinch.

Adrian released Marco, who stumbled backward into the arms of another man.

"Stand up."

I stayed where I was.

His eyes narrowed.

"Elena."

My name in his mouth sounded like a warning.

I placed one palm on the marble to push myself up. My left knee gave a sharp pulse of pain. I ignored it. The dress had been designed to look delicate, not to let a woman move. The fabric caught under my heel.

The screens around the room shifted. Comments ran up the side of the encrypted feed in white text. I had known there would be cameras, but seeing my face multiplied across the Red Room still made something tight coil under my ribs.

Not panic.

Memory.

The De Lucas liked rooms underground. They liked red lights. They liked witnesses who paid to watch pain.

Four years ago, there had been no cameras.

Adrian's mother had been silent for most of the evening. She sat with her back straight, her dark hair pinned perfectly, her pearls resting against her throat. She looked like a woman carved from money and discipline.

I remembered her hands around a teacup.

I remembered her smile.

My stomach did not turn. I had trained it not to.

Adrian glanced at her, then back at me.

"Walk," he said.

I took one step.

For a second, no one spoke.

Then one of the screens that should have been dark flickered back on.

Not the video feed.

Only comments.

White text on black.

One line appeared.

Then another.

That's not Elena Vale.

Zoom in on her face.

Look at the knee.

My breath stayed even.

Adrian's hand tightened around my arm.

The final comment pinned itself at the top of the screen.

She looks like Sofia Rosewood.

The room went silent.

At last, truly silent.

Adrian turned his head slowly toward me.

For the first time since he had put his ring on my finger, my husband looked uncertain.

Not afraid.

Not yet.

But close enough.

I looked up at him and smiled.

Because the dead girl had finally entered the room.
