The first thing my husband gave me after the vows was not a kiss.

His fingers tightened.

More laughter.

I took the glass.

I lifted the champagne.

"To obedience," I said.

Then I tipped the glass and poured it onto the marble between us.

He stepped toward me.

Marco crouched, smelling of cigar smoke and old cologne. He reached for the veil that had slipped over my shoulder.

His fingers brushed the lace near my collarbone.

I remembered her hands around a teacup.

I remembered her smile.

Then one of the screens that should have been dark flickered back on.

Only comments.

One line appeared.

Then another.

Zoom in on her face.

My breath stayed even.

Adrian's hand tightened around my arm.

The final comment pinned itself at the top of the screen.

The room went silent.

At last, truly silent.

Adrian turned his head slowly toward me.

For the first time since he had put his ring on my finger, my husband looked uncertain.

Not afraid.

Not yet.

But close enough.

I looked up at him and smiled.
