Part One: THE PERSON I LEAST WANTED TO OWE

The classroom smelled of chalk dust and someone's melon bread — too sweet, a little stale — and Fujisaki Rin was holding court.

It was the way she always sat: sideways in her chair with one leg crossed over the other, elbow propped on the desk, chin resting in her palm, three friends orbiting around her like attentive little planets. Yui. Miho. Sachi. They listened to her the way people listened to someone who had never been wrong about anything that mattered — which was to say with their mouths slightly open and their opinions checked at the door.

"—so goldfish," Rin was saying, spinning her mechanical pencil with practiced ease, "have a three-second memory. Literally three seconds. Every three seconds, their entire world resets."

She snapped her fingers. "Fresh start. No memory, no grudges, no baggage. That's why they look so calm. They can't hold onto anything long enough to suffer."

"That's kind of beautiful," Yui said.

"It's kind of sad," Miho said.

"It's wrong," said a voice.

Rin's pencil stopped mid-spin.

She turned around slowly.

Two rows behind her, by the window, sat the boy who had occupied that seat since the first day of term without making himself memorable in any direction worth noting. He was reading — or had been reading — a thick paperback with a cracked spine, and he hadn't looked up. He wasn't looking up now. He simply turned a page, like someone who had stated something so self-evidently true that it required no further defense.

Kirishima Ren. That was his name, though Rin had spent most of the semester declining to think about it.

"Excuse me?" she said.

He glanced up. Not at her exactly — more in her general direction, with the expression of someone mildly inconvenienced by the need to explain the obvious.

"Goldfish memory," he said. "The three-second thing is a myth. Researchers have trained goldfish to navigate mazes, pull levers for food, and recognize their owners. Their actual retention is closer to several months. The three-second claim has been debunked so many times it's almost impressive that people still repeat it."

He went back to his book.

The classroom was not particularly loud before. Now it was very specifically quiet in the way that means everyone heard something they weren't supposed to hear, and no one is certain what to do with it.

Rin's jaw was doing something unfamiliar. It took her a moment to identify the sensation: it was the feeling of twenty people watching to see what she would do, and the slow, ugly understanding that she had just said something confidently wrong in front of all of them.

She turned back around.

"Well," she said, and laughed. "Someone did their homework."

It came out lighter than it felt. Her friends laughed along. The moment folded itself away.

But Rin was not the kind of person who forgot things in three seconds. Or three months. Or, as it would turn out, in considerably longer.

## II.

She didn't go after him immediately. That was never her style.

What Rin did — what she was genuinely skilled at — was the slow accumulation of small cruelties, each one deniable on its own, each one devastating in aggregate. It was a skill developed the way most skills develop: through practice, and through always having exactly the right kind of audience.

"Has anyone actually seen him talk to someone?" she'd remark, voice carrying easily across the courtyard. "Like, actually talk. Not just correct people."

"I heard he doesn't have any friends," Yui offered.

"I mean. You can kind of see why, right?"

Rin would not have said she was targeting him.

She was simply noticing things out loud. The fact that Kirishima Ren ate lunch alone every day, under the same tree, with the same book. The fact that he walked to class alone. The fact that he existed in a kind of permanent solitude so practiced it had the quality of deliberate choice rather than misfortune — and that, somehow, was the most irritating thing about him.

"Bet he thinks he's better than everyone," she said once, watching him pass a cluster of people outside the main building without glancing their way. "That's the whole thing with guys like that. They can't connect with people so they decide it's everyone else's problem."

None of her friends disagreed. They rarely did.

Kirishima Ren, for his part, appeared not to notice her at all. He walked through their laughter. He sat through their whispers. He was impervious in the way of someone who had simply stopped expecting anything from the people around him — and that made it worse. Rin wanted a reaction, even an angry one. What she received instead was the quiet indignity of being irrelevant.

She told herself she wasn't doing anything wrong. She was just having fun. He had embarrassed her, after all — without softening, without a single *well, I think I might have read somewhere that—*, had simply opened his mouth and corrected her in front of twenty people the way you'd mark an incorrect answer on an exam.

So he could stand a little of the same.

That was what she told herself.

## III.

It was a fountain pen.

Rin hadn't registered this at first — she'd seen something on his desk, slim and dark, the kind of object that sits apart from the things around it the way significant things sometimes do.

She'd picked it up during the five minutes between classes while Kirishima Ren was out of the room, meaning to do something low-stakes and irritating. Hide it under his notebook. Move it slightly. Something stupid and small.

The pen felt old in her hand. Heavier than expected, with the particular weight of things that have been held thousands of times. The lacquer was worn at the grip, smooth the way objects get when they have been loved by someone's fingers over a long time. The clip bore a small, careful dent — the mark of something that had been dropped once and then never put down carelessly again.

She was examining the nib when it snapped.

Not the nib. The body itself, at the joint between the section and barrel — a hairline fracture that must have been there already; she had barely pressed at all. But it was a very old pen and very brittle, and now there was a soft, sickening *crack* and two pieces in her hands.

The sound was small. Smaller than anything that should matter.

Rin stared at them.

She had not meant to do this. She had come in here for something stupid and forgettable, and this — this was not —

She heard the door.

Three seconds to decide. What she decided, without quite deciding, was to put the pen back on his desk. Both pieces, arranged so it might have been found this way. Then she sat in her own seat, opened her notebook, and arranged her expression somewhere between bored and unbothered, and she waited.

Kirishima Ren came back. He sat down. He reached for the pen.

From the corner of her eye, she watched the exact moment he understood what he was holding.

He didn't speak immediately. He set both pieces on the desk. Stared at them. Even from across the room, Rin could feel the quality of that stillness — the way it was different from his usual stillness, the way water looks different when something heavy moves beneath its surface.

Then he stood up.

He crossed the room in five steps.

His hand closed around the front of her collar — not violently, not quite, but with enough force that her chair scraped back across the floor and her friends scattered and every other sound in the classroom ceased.

Rin had not been physically startled in a long time. She had forgotten how *large* real shock was — how it reached into the chest and found something animal and afraid. Kirishima Ren's face was very close to hers, wearing the kind of controlled fury that was somehow worse than shouting: the kind that has been patient for a long time and has quietly found its reason.

She did not let herself show what she felt.

"It's a pen," she said. Her voice came out slightly higher than she intended. "I'll replace it.

Whatever brand it is, I'll replace it. There's no need to—"

"You can't replace it."

His voice was low. Quiet in a way that silenced the room more thoroughly than any shout.

"It was the only thing my grandfather left me."

Simple words. Said the way you say things that are simply, irreducibly true — without decoration, without appeal.

*The only thing.*

*Left me.*

*My grandfather.*

Past tense.

Rin processed this in a silence that felt longer than it was. The worn lacquer. The dent in the clip. Something carried in a pocket every day for years — for decades — passed from one set of hands to another and then carried in turn.

Something that could not be bought in any store because it had existed in only one place in the world, and that place was between his hands, and now it was not.

She understood the exact shape and weight of what she had done.

But.

She had never backed down in her life — not since she was very young and had learned, very early, that backing down was the fastest way to be swallowed whole — and some part of her that ran deeper than thought kicked in before she could stop it.

"How was I supposed to know?" she said.

Kirishima Ren looked at her.

"You don't leave something like that sitting on a desk," she said. Her voice was doing something embarrassing. She pushed past it. "That's on you, for not — " The rest wouldn't arrange itself correctly. "I didn't even mean to, so you can't just — I wasn't even—"

He let go of her collar.

He picked up the pen — both pieces — and held them in his palm for one moment. Then he placed them carefully into his bag. He picked up his bag. And without looking at her again, without another word, he walked to the door and through it.

The door swung shut.

The classroom was perfectly, horribly silent.

Rin's back hit the wall. She wasn't sure when she'd stood up. Now her knees made a slow, unfamiliar decision, and she slid down until she was sitting on the floor, bag dumped sideways beside her, the back of her hand pressed hard against her mouth.

Her eyes were burning.

She would not cry. She absolutely would not.

"That was so out of line," Yui said immediately, crouching beside her, hand on her shoulder. "Over a *pen*? Grabbing you like that? He could get expelled for that, we all saw it—"

Rin wasn't listening.

She was looking at the spot on the desk where the pen had been.

Yui was still talking. Miho said something about filing a complaint. Someone agreed. The voices layered over each other with the particular warmth of people who have found a common enemy and are offering shared outrage as comfort, and Rin sat on the floor with her burning eyes and her pressed-tight mouth and understood, without wanting to, exactly who the common enemy should be.

## IV.

She stopped looking for him after that.

Not a deliberate decision. More like a door closing somewhere without a name. When she thought about Kirishima Ren — which she did, more than she wanted to — it wasn't with the old impulse to needle or provoke. It was something else. Something she couldn't identify, and so she didn't try.

She went back to her life. He went back to his. The distance between their desks felt approximately fifty meters wider.

She didn't realize she was watching him until she caught herself doing it: across the courtyard, in the library, passing in the hallway. Not following. Just noticing. The way he moved through the world alone and seemed to have made some kind of peace with it — a peace she couldn't look at directly without feeling something sharp at the back of her throat.

He ate under the same tree every day. He always had a book. He was never waiting for anyone.

She looked away. Hated herself for having looked.

Three weeks after the pen, a phone went missing.

Yamamoto Kana described the disappearance with the particular dramatic energy of someone who had been building toward this moment all morning: her birthday phone, barely two months old, vanished from her bag — stolen, clearly, because the bag had been left in the classroom during morning break and she'd been away barely ten minutes —

"Call it," someone said.

Someone did.

The ringtone materialized, faint but unmistakable, from the direction of Rin's bag.

The silence that followed had a specific quality.

Every head turned.

Rin stared at her bag. Then she stood and opened it — not quickly, not the way guilt moves, but with the careful patience of someone who cannot believe what is happening to them — and there it was. Kana's phone, nestled among her things as if it had always lived there.

"I didn't—" She looked up. "I didn't touch it. I don't know how this — I didn't—"

"We all heard it ring," Kana said.

"I *know* we heard it ring, but I didn't — I was at the vending machine the whole break, Yui was with me, she can tell you—"

Yui nodded, but with the unfortunate quality of someone who was very loyal and not entirely convincing.

"I saw it."

The room turned.

Kirishima Ren had his book closed. He was looking at the room with more animation than he'd shown the class in aggregate — not excited, exactly, more like someone who had made a decision and was proceeding with it calmly.

"I came back early. My seminar was cancelled. I was at my desk for about eight minutes before anyone else returned." He nodded once toward a girl in the third row whose name Rin had never bothered to learn. "I saw Shimizu put the phone in Fujisaki's bag."

Shimizu was staring at the floor with a very specific quality of stillness.

"Shimizu sits next to Nakamura," Kirishima Ren continued, with the flat precision of someone laying out pieces that don't need arrangement. "Nakamura is who Yamamoto lent money to last month. It hasn't been paid back."

The silence shifted. Shimizu's face went through several colors.

The matter resolved itself — loudly, chaotically, with contributions from many directions — and eventually Rin found herself back at her desk with the business largely settled. She turned and looked at Kirishima Ren.

He was already reading again, as if the whole thing had been a minor interruption in a day planned around other things.

He had not looked at her once.

She approached his desk as the classroom thinned.

"Hey." She stopped a careful distance away.

"Why did you do that?"

He turned a page.

"I just live the way I've always lived," he said, to the page rather than to her. "What I would do and what I wouldn't do hasn't changed because of anything between us." He glanced up briefly, then back down. "Don't misunderstand it."

Rin opened her mouth. Closed it. Left.

That night she lay flat on her back, ceiling fan turning overhead, eyes wide open. She pressed her lips together and told herself very firmly that she was not thinking about anything.

Not about worn lacquer and a small dent in a clip.

Not about *the only thing* and what those two words contained.

Not about the expression on his face when she'd said *how was I supposed to know* — the way it had looked like something going very still inside a very controlled person, something that had stopped expecting anything from the world and was not surprised to find itself right.

She bit down on her lower lip.

She wasn't thinking about any of it.

## V.

The spring regional academic competition was held on the second Saturday of May, and the university selected its top six students to travel to Osaka.

Rin was not among them.

This was not surprising, and she had not expected it to be, and she told herself she didn't care, and mostly meant it. She spent the Saturday in question in the city with Yui and Miho — takoyaki and crepes and a small vintage market with the kind of things you don't need and inevitably carry home. A good afternoon. Rin bought a hairpin. Miho found a bag she'd been hunting for months. Yui nearly adopted a street dog.

By early evening they were full and tired and separating at the station with the half-reluctant cheerfulness of people who have had a genuinely good day and know that ending it is necessary but slightly sad. Rin put in her earbuds and opened Maps.

The route it suggested was shorter than the way she usually went — about fifteen minutes on foot down a road she didn't recognize. Her feet were sore. Shorter seemed reasonable.

The street was quiet. Residential on one side, a drainage canal glinting dully on the other. The kind of street that was perfectly harmless and felt faintly isolated the way all quiet streets do after dark. Her music was something slow and slightly melancholy, and she was thinking about nothing in particular — the hairpin, her feet, whether one too many crepes had been a mistake — when she turned a corner and stopped walking.

It took her a moment to understand what she was looking at.

The motorcycle was in the middle of the road, or what remained of a motorcycle. The frame had been folded into a shape that was no longer a straight line — a vicious, crumpled angle that spoke plainly of tremendous force applied very suddenly. The front wheel had separated from where it should have been. Wide black arcs on the asphalt marked the rest: tires locking, dragging, leaving.

The car was gone.

Rin stood for exactly one second.

Then she stepped forward, and that was when she saw the figure on the road — away from the bike, because that was how these things worked when the impact was bad enough, person going one way and machine going another — lying on his side, one arm stretched forward. Blood on the asphalt. Too much blood, catching the lamplight in a dark and specific way she was going to see again later when she closed her eyes.

She had crossed half the distance before she knew she was running.

She dropped to her knees.

She knew it was him before she saw his face.

She couldn't have explained how. The shape of him, maybe. The school bag still half across his back. His ID card that had slipped out and lay face-up on the road two feet away, his photo looking back at her from the asphalt.

"Kirishima Ren."

No answer.

Her phone was in her hand. Her hands were doing something involuntary — a fine, uncontrollable trembling — and she focused, with the particular clarity that only came when she was genuinely frightened, on the numbers. One-one-nine. The call connected and she spoke and did not sound like herself — she sounded flat and precise, which was not how she usually sounded about anything. Street name from the canal marker. Motorcycle accident. Victim unconscious. Severe bleeding. No other vehicle at the scene.

She stayed on the line while the dispatcher instructed her. She stayed on the line after that.

She didn't touch him — the dispatcher had said not to, and she understood why, and she obeyed — but she knelt on the road with her hand hovering just above his shoulder, and she talked.

She didn't know why she talked. It was probably useless. She did it anyway.

"You're going to be fine," she said, to the road, to the dark, to him. "Don't be dramatic about it.

You're going to be fine."

The ambulance took eight minutes.

She rode with him.

## VI.

The hospital was a large municipal complex north of the station — fluorescent corridors, linoleum floors, a waiting room that smelled of antiseptic and old coffee from a machine in the corner that looked like it had been there since the previous century. Rin spent three hours in a plastic chair while people in scrubs moved around her with the practiced non-eye-contact of staff who have learned that people in waiting rooms are not typically there because things have gone well.

At two in the morning a doctor emerged and told her the patient was stable. Multiple fractures — collarbone, two ribs, left radius.

Significant blood loss. Mild head trauma; the helmet had done part of its job. Unconscious for the foreseeable future, but the prognosis was for full recovery. Good that the ambulance had arrived when it had.

"Are you family?" the doctor asked.

"No," Rin said.

"Is there family we should contact?"

She thought about what she knew of Kirishima Ren's family. The general shape of the answer was not encouraging. She thought about what she had observed, and what you could tell about a person from the things they didn't have and the things they didn't say. She thought about an old pen passed from a grandfather to a grandson, and what it meant that it had been the *only* thing.

"Contacting them probably wouldn't help," she said.

The doctor gave her a look containing several questions she had no answers to, and excused himself.

Rin sat in the plastic chair for another hour. Then she went home.

Then she came back the next morning with a box of onigiri she didn't eat, and sat in the same chair, and told herself she was there because if something went wrong she needed to be able to say that someone had been present.

She came back the day after. And the day after that.

On the fourth day she found herself in the hospital gift shop holding a basket that had become — at some point while she was walking the aisles not quite paying attention — very full.

Vitamins in three different forms. Four protein drinks. Energy supplement jelly. Fortified crackers in two flavors. A herbal tonic in a small glass bottle sitting beside a tube of electrolyte powder as if they belonged together. Mineral supplements. She had gone down there for something to eat and had ended up in front of a shelf labeled *nutritional support* and had started putting things in the basket because she didn't know which ones mattered and buying all of them seemed like adequately covering the problem.

She arranged them on the bedside table.

The nurses had started recognizing her by the third day. One of them — an older woman with a kind, tired face and reading glasses pushed up on her forehead — asked if she was his girlfriend.

"No," Rin said.

"Classmate?"

"...Yes."

"You've been here every day."

Rin looked at her. "He doesn't have anyone else."

The nurse nodded in the way of people who have heard something like this before and know better than to say so, and it was the most quietly depressing acknowledgment Rin had received in recent memory.

On the fifth day the attending physician told her the patient's neurological indicators were strong, the prognosis had improved considerably, and full recovery was not just possible but likely — *excellent* recovery, actually, given the patient's baseline physical condition, which was, the physician noted with professional satisfaction, quite remarkable.

Rin sat with this information for a long while.

Then she made what she would later call a rational calculation: she was no longer needed here. She had fulfilled the purpose she had come for, which was to make sure he didn't die, which he was not going to do. Nothing further required her presence.

She stopped at the billing desk on her way out.

She emptied the card she'd been using — her monthly allowance, loaded at the start of every month — and paid the initial administrative processing fee that had to be settled before insurance coverage could begin its work. She told herself it was an inconvenience she would deal with.

She left.

She told no one.

She did not examine why she had done any of it. She had learned, over the years, that there were questions better not asked directly.

## VII.

Kirishima Ren opened his eyes on the seventh day.

Ceiling first. Then the smell of antiseptic. Then the particular disorientation of waking in an unfamiliar place with no memory of why, followed by the slower, grinding return of *why* as his body offered its report: the collarbone, the ribs, the arm, the head — each injury announcing itself in careful order, like entries on a form.

He spent some time simply existing in this condition before he looked around the room.

He was alone. This didn't surprise him.

What surprised him was the bedside table.

He looked at this collection for a long time.

He pressed the call button.

The nurse explained things calmly and in order. The date. The nature and extent of his injuries. The course of treatment. The prognosis. The projected recovery timeline, which was notably ahead of standard — *substantially* ahead, the physician would later tell him with visible professional pleasure.

Kirishima Ren absorbed all of this. Then he said:

"Seven days."

"Yes."

He lay back and looked at the ceiling and did the arithmetic on what seven days meant. The competition had been the day of the accident. He had been preparing since October — reading lists, research sets, early mornings, the undergraduate academic forum that accepted ten submissions from across the country and had accepted his, the presentation that was now never going to happen. Months of work organized toward a single day, and the day had come and gone while he lay unconscious in a hospital bed.

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he looked at the bedside table again.

"A girl brought those," the nurse said, in the careful tone of someone who has been waiting for the right moment. "She was the one who called the ambulance. She came to visit for several days afterward."

"What did she look like?"

The nurse described someone. Young, probably around his age. She'd seemed —

"Did she leave contact information?"

"No. She left after we told her you would make a full recovery. She bought those before she went.

He was quiet for a while.

A stranger, even a kind one, did not behave this way. Four days of visits. A careful arrangement of provisions assembled without any evident nutritional knowledge but with what was unmistakably sincere intent. He tried to think of who he knew who might have done any of this.

The inventory was brief. He reached the end of it quickly and found nothing that fit. The nothing at the end was familiar in the way of things that have been there long enough to stop hurting.

But it nagged at him.

*Several days.* He turned this over. A stranger didn't sustain that kind of effort for someone they didn't know.

He looked at the supplements again — all labeled *nutritional*, none comprising a coherent dietary strategy, every single one clearly purchased by someone who had decided that thoroughness was a substitute for expertise and had committed to this principle with complete conviction.

Something moved at the edge of his expression. Not quite a smile. Very close to it.

He stopped thinking about the unknown benefactor, and he got to work on recovering.

He was discharged four weeks later.

"Three months ahead of the projected timeline," the attending physician told him, with the visible satisfaction of someone professionally pleased by an anomaly. "Your baseline physical condition is quite remarkable, honestly—"

"Thank you," Kirishima Ren said, put on his jacket carefully around the collarbone, and left.

He owed the bank money now. He had one part-time job — tutoring, Tuesday and Thursday evenings — but the numbers didn't balance. He looked for a second position over the following weekend.

A café near his apartment posted a listing two days later. Weekend shifts, recently opened, some distance from campus but close to his building. He applied Saturday morning, was contacted by afternoon, interviewed Sunday, and was told to start the coming weekend.

He arrived early. Put on the apron. Began learning the register.

He was ten minutes into his first shift when the back door opened and Fujisaki Rin walked in.

## IX.

She almost didn't see him at first.

Rin came through the back entrance with her apron strings in her hands and the slightly distracted energy of someone running half a minute behind on something they weren't entirely enthusiastic about being on time for. She was thinking about the three tables she needed to set and whether the morning coffee had been worth the price, and then she looked up.

And stopped.

Her hands stilled on the apron strings.

The sequence of thoughts that followed was very fast and not entirely linear. First: *him.* Second: *here.* Third, arriving with a cold and specific clarity — *he was unconscious the whole time I was there. The nurse said he woke up after I left. He doesn't know. He can't know. Unless the nurse said something — but she didn't have my name, and the bill desk didn't either, and I never told anyone—*

He hadn't looked up yet. He was studying the register with his back mostly to her, giving it the same focused attention he gave everything, and in the three seconds before he turned around, Rin made a decision that wasn't quite a decision — more like the automatic deployment of the only armor she had ever been reliably good at.

The thing was, she didn't know what her face was doing right now. And she needed to know what her face was doing. If it was doing something readable — something with guilt or recognition in it — then the first moment their eyes met would already say too much. And once something was said, it couldn't be unsaid.

So when Kirishima Ren turned and their eyes met, what he saw was Rin with one eyebrow slightly raised, wearing the expression of someone who has encountered a mildly amusing piece of trivia.

"Oh," she said. She tilted her head. "You're alive."

He looked at her.

"You say that like you're surprised."

"Mm." She came the rest of the way through the door, tying the apron with practiced efficiency. "A little bit, honestly." "Well." She capped the subject with a bright, performative smile — the one she used when she was closing off a topic — and turned toward the floor. "Tables won't set themselves."

Kirishima Ren's voice came from behind her, flat and even.

Rin stopped walking.

The back of her neck did something.

She turned around slowly.

He was looking at the register. Not at her.

Pressing buttons with the same focused expression he'd been wearing when she walked in, as if he had said something no more significant than a weather observation.

"What," she said, very carefully, "did you just say."

"I'm learning the register."

"I was commenting on the general pattern of people who create problems and then have to solve them financially." He found a button. "Not about anyone specific."

"You were *clearly*—"

"I'm learning the register." He glanced up. "The register."

The deliberate, maddening calm of it — repeating the line as if she might need the translation — lit something behind her sternum.

"Ungrateful," she said, and the word came out before she could frame it properly, raw and a little too sharp for the situation she was supposedly not having. "You — ungrateful — if it weren't for me who—"

She stopped.

The sentence hung in the air, unfinished, its missing half visible to anyone paying attention.

*If it weren't for me who—*

Rin heard herself. Heard exactly what was still attached to the end of that sentence, dangling in plain sight, and felt the floor shift slightly beneath her.

Kirishima Ren had gone very still.

He was looking at her now — not the way he usually looked at things, measured and processing from a remove — but with a particular quality of attention that was different in a way she couldn't name and did not want to examine.

"If it weren't for you," he said, slowly, "who what."

"Nothing."

"You were going to say something."

"I was going to say you should be grateful to *exist* in a world where people are better than you deserve." She delivered this with more momentum than she had, riding the bluster of someone buying thirty seconds to rearrange her footing. "Which is what I was saying. Ungrateful. That's the whole point. Completely ungrateful attitude, which, if you knew anything about—"

"Fujisaki."

"—basic human decency you would understand that people who go around implying that their colleagues are somehow—"

"Fujisaki."

"*What.*"

The speed of her own answer betrayed her. She heard it the moment it left her mouth — too fast, too sharp, the timing of someone who has been listening very hard rather than speaking very fluently.

Kirishima Ren studied her for three seconds.

"Okay, both of you—" The manager materialized in the kitchen doorway with the impeccable timing of someone whose professional instincts had been calibrated by years of exactly this kind of situation. She looked at both of them with the pleasant, unambiguous expression of someone who was only pleasant when she intended to be firm. "Tables. Register. *Working. Please.*"

Rin turned on her heel and walked to the floor.

She set up table three with a precision that was slightly too focused for a task that didn't require it. Her jaw was set. Her hands were steady. She was absolutely not replaying the last two minutes, and the warmth creeping up the back of her neck was from the morning sun through the front windows.

From across the room, she could feel him not looking at her.

Which was somehow worse than him looking.

*If it weren't for me—*

She had said it. She had actually said it. Not all of it — she had stopped in time, technically, she had caught herself — but the shape of the sentence was visible even half-finished, like a sheet thrown over something that was obviously still there. He was not a person who missed shapes.

She moved to table four. She kept her shoulders level, her expression arranged into something approximating the bored competence of a person who had places to be and was simply here first.

Inside, she was very quietly recalculating.

The park at eight in the evening was empty except for pigeons on the lamp posts and distant traffic from the main road. Lamplight made yellow circles on the footpath. Somewhere in the trees something rustled and went quiet.

Kirishima Ren stood rather than sat. Sitting felt wrong for this.

He was not, generally, someone who showed anger easily — he had long since identified this about himself and found it useful. But there was a specific type of frustration that had been building since eight o'clock that morning, and it had a shape he was fairly certain he recognized, and it had been sitting in his chest all day with nowhere to go.

Rin stood five feet away with her arms crossed and the expression of someone who had prepared several responses and was waiting to see which prompt would apply.

"Explain what you said this morning," he said.

"Which part. I say a lot of things."

"You know which part."

"I say a *lot* of things. You'll have to be specific." She examined a point somewhere above his left shoulder. "I'm a very verbose person."

"Fujisaki."

"*Very* verbose."

"If it weren't for you," he said. "Who what."

She looked at the pigeons.

He waited.

Rin had the quality of someone assembling something — not a lie, exactly, but a version of the truth trimmed down to the size she could afford to hand over. He could watch it happening. She was faster at it than most people. She'd had more practice.

"I was passing by," she said at last. "Your accident. I happened to be on that road — Google Maps, shorter route, completely irrelevant detail — the point is I came across the scene. You were there. There was a lot of blood." She said the last part slightly faster, the way you push through something. "So I called one-one-nine.

That's it."

"You were in the ambulance."

"I was already in it before I could — you can't exactly get off in the middle of a highway."

"You came back. For several days."

A brief pause.

"Who told you that."

"The nurse."

Another pause. She looked at the canal railing. Then back.

"Well." She recrossed her arms. "I was already in the ambulance. It made sense to follow through. Make sure you didn't die of negligence on my watch — that would have been a very inconvenient thing to have associated with me."

"The supplements."

"What about them."

"The table full of things when I woke up."

She shrugged, practiced and loose. "I'd already been there multiple days. Leaving empty-handed seemed wasteful. I wanted the nurses to have a favorable impression — long-term investment. Professional networking." She said this with the complete conviction of someone who has committed fully to an explanation. "In case I ever need a hospital again."

"*Networking,*" he said.

"Broadly construed."

"With nurses."

"*Yes*, with nurses. People underestimate nurses. I take the long view." She straightened. "You're welcome, by the way."

"The bill," he said.

The air shifted.

"A portion of the initial payment was made by someone who didn't leave a name," he said. "I checked with the billing desk."

"Small world."

"Was that you."

She held his gaze for approximately two seconds.

"Basically nothing. Change at the bottom of a bag. Don't make it into something."

"Was it you."

"...yes. Fine. But it was nothing—"

"Tell me," he said, with very careful, very specific quietness, "that you didn't take this job because of that."

The sentence landed the way certain sentences do — without force, without drama, but with a weight that had nowhere to go but straight down.

Rin opened her mouth.

She always had responses. She carried them the way other people carried keys — sorted by situation, ready. She reached for the first one. It wasn't there. The second. Also gone. She went through several more and found, at the back of the collection where the convincing ones usually lived, an empty space where something should have been.

She looked at him.

He was standing in the lamplight with his hands in his jacket pockets, wearing an expression that was patient and tired and not unkind, which was somehow harder to look at than anger would have been.

"My own reasons," she said, "are my own reasons."

He said her name. Her given name, not Fujisaki — the name he had never used, that nobody in their year used without invitation. He said it in the lamplight in an empty park at eight in the evening with no particular inflection, and something about the plainness of it landed somewhere she didn't have a word for and didn't try to find one.

She looked at his shoulder instead. The slight tension in it, the compensation in the opposite side — the collarbone still not entirely healed, still being worked around. The way a body incorporated damage and kept moving anyway.

She had sat in a plastic chair for four days watching a door that didn't open.

She had bought supplements from a shelf labeled *nutritional* because she didn't know which ones actually mattered, and buying all of them felt like at least doing something.

She had told her parents she'd spent her allowance on something stupid and endured her mother's voice on the phone at the particular frequency of disappointment that Rin had been disappointing her way through for two decades.

She was working weekends at a café she'd had no reason to work at, on the other side of the city from campus, and she was standing in a park at night with no explanations left.

"I don't know what you want me to say," she said. It came out smaller than she intended.

Kirishima Ren pressed two fingers to his forehead. He exhaled slowly, in the particular way of someone holding something together from the outside.

"Of all the people," he said quietly. Not quite to her — more to the air, to the lamplight, to the evening in general. With the quality of someone absorbing something they would have genuinely preferred not to have to absorb. "Of all the people it turned out to be."

Rin said nothing.

The lamplight sat between them. The pigeons shifted. Somewhere on the road a car passed with its windows down playing something she didn't recognize.

"The person I owe the most to," he said, still quietly, "is the last person I ever wanted to owe anything to."

He picked up his bag. He settled it carefully over the shoulder that didn't still ache.

"Get home safely," he said.

He walked away through the lamplight, and the dark folded around him, and the park was very quiet after he left.

Rin stood in the yellow circle of the streetlamp for a long time with her arms at her sides — not crossed, not guarded, just at her sides, which was not a position she was used to — and looked at the path where he had gone without following.

She bit the inside of her cheek.

She was not thinking about anything.

She was absolutely, categorically not thinking about a dark road and eight minutes that had felt like an hour, or the weight of someone's silence when they were unconscious and she was kneeling on asphalt trying to keep her voice from doing something embarrassing. Not about a bedside table arranged by someone who didn't know what she was doing but kept showing up anyway. Not about the way he had said her name just now, in a park, with no particular inflection, and where exactly it had landed.

She had a shift next Saturday.

She picked up her bag and walked home.
