Adrian came home at 1:43 in the morning with another woman's perfume on his coat.

I knew the time because I had stopped sleeping by then. The apartment had gone quiet hours ago, the kind of quiet that made every small sound feel deliberate. The refrigerator hummed. The old pipes clicked once inside the wall. From Leo's room came the soft, uneven breathing of a child who had cried himself tired and tried to hide it from his mother.

Adrian's key turned in the lock.

Adrian looked away first.

"Vivienne called," he said. "Milo had a panic episode in the parking lot. He saw other fathers and broke down. Ethan's death still affects him. You know that."

Ethan Ward had been Adrian's friend. He had died two years ago in a car accident that left Vivienne widowed and Milo fatherless. I had mourned him too. "Who?"

"Good," I said. "Then we won't waste time being scared."

"No. I think a judge will care that our son has learned to apologize for needing his father."

The words struck. He masked it quickly, but not before I saw.

I picked up my glass of water and took a sip. My hand was steady now.

"And what exactly am I doing?"

"Replacing us in public and asking us to stay quiet in private."

His nostrils flared. "That's an ugly accusation."

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

Small feet on hardwood.

Adrian turned first. I followed his gaze and saw Leo standing outside his bedroom door in striped pajamas, hair flattened on one side, his favorite stuffed tiger hanging from one hand by the tail. His face was pale with sleep, but his eyes were wide.

He had heard enough. I did not know how much. Enough was already too much.

"Leo," Adrian said, and the name came out with real warmth, real guilt. He took a step toward him. "Buddy, why are you awake?"

Leo did not move closer.

He looked at Adrian's shirt, then at the laptop, then at me.

Children notice what adults pray they won't. They may not understand perfume, court petitions, or emotional affairs, but they understand the shape of a room when love has been mishandled.

I went to him and crouched, smoothing his hair back from his forehead. "Hey. Did the door wake you?"

He nodded, but his eyes stayed on his father.

Leo's mouth trembled. He pressed the tiger to his chest.

"Were you with Milo?" he asked.

Adrian stopped.

"Milo needed help today," he said. "But that doesn't mean I forgot you."

Leo absorbed that. His little fingers tightened around the tiger's worn plush neck.

"Then why didn't you come?"

There it was. The whole marriage, reduced to six words by an eight-year-old boy.

Adrian's face shifted again. He opened his mouth, but for once, nothing came out immediately.

I wished he would kneel. I wished he would say, I was wrong. I wished he would cross the hallway, hold his son, and let the world burn outside our door. The wish rose in me so fiercely it almost felt like hope.

Then his phone rang.

Vivienne's name flashed across the table.

Leo saw it.

So did Adrian.

So did I.

The ringing filled the apartment, polite and relentless.
