The first wave hit her at exactly 8:47 PM.

Evelyn Hart knew the time because she had been staring at the clock for the past four hours, watching the minutes crawl past like wounded animals. She opened it.

Evelyn read the note three times.

Then she walked to the window and watched the candlelight on the terrace until it flickered out, leaving her in complete darkness.
