I had always been good at pretending I belonged.

That was probably why no one looked twice when I stood in the middle of the crowded gallery with a glass of cheap champagne in my hand, smiling at people whose names I forgot the second they walked away. I knew when to laugh. I knew how to tilt my head as if I was listening to every word. I knew how to look like a young artist on the edge of a bright future, not a girl who sometimes woke up at three in the morning with her heart racing, certain she had heard something calling from far away.

The gallery was tucked into a narrow street in Chelsea, all white walls, polished concrete, and people dressed in black pretending they did not care how much everyone else noticed them. Chloe leaned close and lowered her voice. "Speaking of marketable, that woman in the silver jacket has been looking at your painting for ten minutes. Rich aunt energy. Go talk to her."

I glanced across the room. A woman with silver hair and red lipstick stood in front of my canvas, one hand resting at her throat. She was studying the moon in the painting with an expression I could not read.

My stomach tightened in the familiar way it did whenever opportunity came too close. I wanted my work to be seen. Of course I did. "Sophia."

"What? I'm not endorsing the trees. I'm just saying this is expensive."

Chloe looked at me. The joking left her face. "Are you thinking about it?"

I should have said no. I should have put the card in the nearest trash can and gone back to pretending my life was normal.

Instead, I looked across the room at my painting. The girl at the edge of the forest looked back at the moon, waiting.

"Maybe," I said.

"I don't have a dangerous voice."

"I will."

I meant it.

My fingers tightened around the stem.
