Chapter One: The Footnote That Burned

The last drop of coffee had gone cold sometime between equation 117 and 117b.

Dr. Mara Ellison noticed only because the cup stuck to her lip when she tried to drink. She set it down, wiped the dark ring from her mouth, and stared at the wall of numbers that crawled across the blackboard like ivy made of chalk. One line remained blank. She had been staring at it for twenty minutes, maybe thirty; the clock in the deserted history faculty clicked loud enough to bruise the silence.

“Come on,” she whispered. “You want to be a door or a joke?”

The blank line did not answer. Outside, a November wind rattled the stained-glass windows of Cambridge; inside, the radiator coughed once and gave up. She felt the same cough inside her ribs. If the proof failed tonight, the grant vanished tomorrow, and the last five years would shrink into a footnote no one would ever read.

She picked up the chalk, weightless as a bird bone, and wrote:

The line looked innocent. It was not. It claimed that a person could step out of 2029 the way one steps out of a room, provided the door was carved from oak and copper and enough electricity to light the eastern seaboard. She had built the door in the sub-cellar beneath King’s College Library, hidden behind shelves of books no one had opened since 1911. The college believed she was cataloguing seventeenth-century trade ledgers. The college was wrong.

Mara capped the chalk, wiped her hands on her jeans, and shut the office light. The corridor smelled of dust and old varnish; her boots counted the boards like a slow metronome. At the stairwell she paused, listening. Nothing—only the hush institutions keep for their ghosts. She descended toward the stacks, key ring jangling like tiny shackles.

The iron gate to the sub-cellar groaned. She stepped through, pulled it closed, and bolted it. Twenty-two stone stairs spiralled into dark. She counted them aloud; she always counted them, ever since she was eight and her father taught her that numbers were prayers you could test. At the bottom she pressed her palm against the oak door she had fitted herself, summer after summer, stealing hours between lectures and conferences and the funeral of the man who had taught her to count.

The laboratory smelled of solder and beeswax. A single bulb hung from a wire, throwing copper gleams onto the cradle that squatted in the centre like a squatting spider. It was part printing press, part orrery, part electric chair. She had drawn the first sketch on the back of a gas bill; the college treasurer still believed the expense was for climate-control upgrades. She had told so many lies she could no longer remember which ones were kind.

She shrugged on the leather harness, buckling chest, waist, thighs. The straps felt friendlier than any embrace she had time for. On the bench lay the chronometer: a pocket-watch the size of a child’s heart, its hands forged from meteoric iron. She had machined the gears herself, filing each tooth until it bit time the way a wolf bites a haunch. She slipped it into the pouch sewn inside her jacket.

“Right,” she said to the empty room. “Trial three. Observer destination: London, 2 September 1666, 03:00 local. Event radius: fifty metres. Intervention: minimal.”

She had written the protocol like a confession she refused to sign.

Her hand hovered over the brass knife-switch. A small voice—sounding annoyingly like her mother—asked what gave her the right. She answered aloud: “No one else will.” Then she slammed the switch home.

The bulb flared white. The cradle spun. The air turned thick, sweet, metallic, the way blood tastes when you bite your tongue. She felt her stomach fold into her throat, her ribs squeeze like a fist, and then—release. The light vanished. The dark smelled of smoke and river mud.

She was standing in an alley no wider than a man’s outstretched arms. Timber walls leaned overhead, blocking the stars. Somewhere a dog barked itself hoarse; farther off, the Thames slapped wooden piles. She touched the wall: real. She smelled tar, yeast, the sourness of close-packed sleep. Her knees shook, but the ground held.

“1666,” she murmured, tasting the digits. They felt sharp, new-minted.

She stepped onto Pudding Lane. The street was a gutter of black water running between overhanging jetties. A single window glowed ahead; candlelight flickered onto the sign of a baker. Farriner, read the painted loaf. The king’s own bread. She remembered the name from every textbook: Thomas Farriner, the man whose oven would ignite the City of London in fourteen hours. She had arrived the night before the Great Fire.

A shape moved in the doorway—thin, quick, barefoot. A boy hugging a roll of printed sheets. He saw her, froze.

“Who’re you?” His voice cracked like green wood.

Mara lifted both hands, palms out. “Lost. Looking for the river.”

The boy’s eyes narrowed. “River’s south. You’re walking north.” He clutched the papers tighter. “You ain’t dressed right.”

She glanced at her own clothes: wool coat, canvas trousers, leather boots laced to the knee. In 2029 they marked her as eccentric; here they marked her as foreign coin. She improvised: “Shipwreck. Dutch merchantman. I swam ashore with what I wore.”

“Dutchies wear petticoats,” the boy said, but his tone wavered. He was perhaps seventeen, freckles drowned in soot. “You got coin?”

She fished a silver penny from her pouch—one of ten she had minted from melted twentieth-century currency, edges clipped, date worn smooth. She tossed it. He caught left-handed, bit it, nodded.

“Daniel,” he said, jerking his thumb at his own chest. “Apprentice to the King’s Printer. These’s broadsheets for tomorrow. Proclamation against papists.” He spat the last word like gristle. “You want work? They’re hiring watermen to haul goods. Fire’s been burning warehouses all week—small ones. Folk are spooked.”

Mara’s stomach lurched. Minor fires before the main conflagration—records mentioned them, but they had never seemed important. Now they felt like rehearsals. She swallowed. “I’m no good with boats.”

Daniel shrugged. “Suit yourself.” He turned, then paused. “Stay clear of the baker’s chimney after dark. Master says sparks been flying.” He disappeared into the lane, bare feet silent on the cobbles.

She exhaled fog. The boy would live or die by how fast he ran tomorrow. She could warn him. She could warn Farriner. She could—what?—buy every bucket in the ward, bribe the watch, sabotage the ovens. Textbooks called the fire a tragedy; they also called it the reset that ended the plague’s grip. Change one, perhaps change both. The equation had no ethical constant.

A church bell tolled three times. The sound felt heavy, real, like a rope thrown across centuries. She walked on, counting doorways, mapping exits, noting wells. Each step left a wet print; the lane bled refuse. Somewhere a baby cried, sudden, thin. She tasted smoke that was not yet smoke.

At the lane’s end she stopped beneath the baker’s shutter. Light leaked through knotholes. Inside, a man coughed; wood creaked. She pictured embers nestling in straw, the first tongue of orange licking flour dust. She raised her hand, meaning to knock, meaning—she did not know what she meant.

The chronometer in her pouch quivered, then burned cold against her hip. A warning: the return window opened in four minutes, stayed open for ninety seconds. She had calibrated it like a mother setting a lullaby, afraid of oversleep.

She backed away. One step. Two. The harness beneath her coat hummed, wires trembling like anxious veins. She turned, walked faster, then ran. Alley mouths yawned; the river stink grew stronger. She needed open ground, a place where the spin of the world could find her.

She reached the wharf. Lanterns bobbed on moored barges. Water slapped wood; ropes creaked. She pulled the chronometer free. Its hands were spinning, wild, drunken. The display—Roman numerals she had etched with a jeweller’s loupe—showed 03:11, then 03:07, then 03:00, then nothing. The glass fogged. Inside, the meteoric iron gears screamed.

“No,” she said. “No, you don’t.” She shook the watch the way her father once shook a radio that refused news of the moon landing. The hands slowed, stopped, ran backward.

The air behind her warmed, as if someone had opened a furnace door. She turned. A spark—orange, no larger than a candle’s—floated out of an upper window on Pudding Lane. It rose, paused, and settled onto the thatch of the house opposite. The straw caught with a soft sound: a sigh too late to take back.

She stared, every equation erased from her mind. The flame crawled, curious, then leapt. Timber answered with crackling laughter. A shout lifted inside the baker’s house. Doors slammed. Feet pounded. The night began to split.

The chronometer’s hands locked on 03:14. The return circuit closed. She felt the tug, the iron taste, the folding bones—but weaker, frayed. She glimpsed Daniel darting toward the river, arms full of broadsheets, hair already bright with reflected fire. He was shouting something she could not hear.

The world blurred. She reached for the knife-switch in her memory, slammed it. Darkness swallowed the river, the fire, the boy.

She hit the cradle gasping. The laboratory bulb flickered, steadied. The smell of solder was gone; instead, ozone and smoke. She tore at the harness, buckles clattering like dropped coins. Her coat sleeve was singed. She stared at the black rim, touched it, felt heat.

On the bench, the logbook lay open. The page she had left blank now carried a single scrawl, not in her handwriting:

The fire remembers you.

She slammed the book shut, but the words had already escaped into the room, into her lungs, into time.

Outside, somewhere above the stone ceiling, a church bell began to toll—three times, then four, then too many to count.
