“Deal.”

She busied herself at the tiny stove, kettle rattling. Behind her the spinet tried small phrases, each aborted, like birds testing a branch. Silence pooled, thick as wax. Then Daniel reached for his violin. “Play something with me,” he said quietly. “One tune. Let the house remember what it’s for.”
