“Or for people who need remembering.” His fingers stilled. “I’m starving,” he admitted, “but I’d trade a meal for a duet.”

She almost smiled; the muscles felt rusty. “There’s bread, and tea that isn’t entirely stale.”

“Deal.”

She busied herself at the tiny stove, kettle rattling. Behind her the spinet tried small phrases, each aborted, like birds testing a branch. Steam rose, carrying the scent of bergamot from leaves she could not recall buying. “Could they send me back?”

“Maybe. If they decide you’re worth the risk.” She stared into her tea. “Mostly they seal the tear and forget what fell through.”

Silence pooled, thick as wax. Then Daniel reached for his violin. “Play something with me,” he said quietly. “One tune. Let the house remember what it’s for.”

Lira’s stomach tightened. She pictured the sheets on the walls, mute witnesses. “I haven’t—” Her voice cracked. She tried again. “My hands might not obey.”

Daniel lowered the bow. “Not heroes,” he said. “Just people. But the house remembers now.”

Outside, a canal barge horn moaned—curfew warning. Lira straightened. “You can stay till morning,” she said, surprising them both. “After that, the council will sniff you out.”

He nodded, sudden fatigue dragging at his shoulders. “Thank you, Lira.” He glanced at the empty wall beside the spinet, bare except for a single nail. “May I hang my coat there?”

She swallowed. “Yes.”

Across the garret Daniel’s breathing evened. The watch-chain glinted on the windowsill, its broken clasp a tiny mouth forever mid-sentence. Somewhere below, water lapped against stone, counting hours that did not belong to either of them.

She realized she had not told him the second rule of seams: once something crosses, the tear remembers the shape. It tugs. It wants to close, but it also wants to finish what it started.

The question lay between them, unspoken: whether a song could mend a rip in the world, or widen it.

Lira closed her eyes, palms resting on the blanket. In the hollow beneath her ribs a single note lingered, warm, uncertain, still vibrating.
