The station had thinned to a skeleton.
Last drink-vendor pulled his shutter down; the iron rattled travelled away and left the air colder.
High above the centre track the departure board gave a mechanical cough, the way an old man clears his throat before saying something final.
White bulbs stuttered, then locked on five capitals:

G D A I

He had been standing so long his coat had taken the shape of the pillar against which he leaned.
When the letters appeared he straightened a little, the way a sleeper hears his own name in a dream and tries to answer.

“G,” he muttered, tasting the sound.
It tasted of rust on a gate he had licked as a boy to see if blood and iron were the same thing.
The gate had been at the end of a lane his mother called nowhere, yet she let him walk to it each dusk while she sat on the step smoking into the sleeve of her dress.
He remembered the squeal the hinge made: a small animal stepped on by a heavier boot.
That squeal was inside the letter now, buzzing inside the glass bulb.

A loudspeaker crackled, a woman’s voice recited the delay of the northbound train for the forty-third minute.
The announcement ended with a click, like someone closing a locket.

“D.”
He said it softer, almost polite.
Immediately the smell of diesel returned— not the clean burn of today’s engines but the black cough of the coach that took his class to the sea when he was ten.
Windows stuck shut, boys singing off-key, the teacher at the front pretending not to hear.
He had sat beside a girl who drew a house on the fogged glass and then rubbed it out before he could ask whose house it was.
The smell was so sudden he looked down half-expecting his shoes to be soaked in fuel.

The board hummed, a low electric prayer.

“A.”
This one hurt, though he could not say why.
It was the shape: two leaning sides that met but never embraced.
It reminded him of the way his father stood in the doorway the night he left— silhouette against the hall light, bag in the right hand, the left hand hanging empty.
No wave, no sentence finished.
Just that open triangle of space under the arm where a child’s head might have fitted if invited.
He felt the old ache in his own shoulder, as if the arm remembered being not-raised.

He took a step nearer the tracks.
The platform edge was painted caution yellow but someone’s heel had scraped a small moon of it away.
He focused on that missing chip while the bulbs burned overhead.

“I.”
The narrowest, the one that looked back.
When he lifted his eyes the letter had become a slot in the board and inside the slot he saw a face: his own, but younger, the version that still believed the next train would take him somewhere decisive.
The face stared, waiting for instructions he could no longer give.
He lifted a hand; the reflection did the same but slower, as though time on the other side of the glass had thickened.

A wind moved through the tunnel, pushing the smell of steel and rats ahead of it.
The bulbs flickered once, twice, then the whole board blinked out.
Darkness pooled, then the white returned, rearranged:

I U B D S

He spoke them in order, a child sounding out a curse he does not yet understand.
The sounds felt round in his mouth, marbles of glass.
“U” made him think of a cup his mother kept on the high shelf for guests, the chipped one she never threw away because waste was worse than want.
“B” arrived as a bruise on the knee he got climbing a fence the day they buried the dog.
“D” again, but softer now, a diesel ghost.
“S” hissed like the last breath of the station’s kettle when the janitor pulled the plug.

He became aware of his own breathing, too loud in the empty hall.
Each exhale clouded and vanished, proof he was still allowed to leave warmth in the world.
He tried to shape the five letters into a word but they resisted, happy to stay strangers to each other.
Still, the order felt deliberate, like a hand had sorted them while thinking of him personally.

Overhead a single bulb dimmed, brightened, dimmed again— the way a person tests whether anyone is watching before speaking.
He thought of speaking back: asking the board what delay was coded in those letters, asking whether the northbound train would ever arrive or if arrival was a story told to keep people patient.
His tongue moved but produced only the same five sounds, softer, almost affectionate.

I-U-B-D-S

The loudspeaker woke again, not the woman’s voice but a man’s, older, slower, as if dragged from bed for overtime.
“Passengers are reminded that timetables are provisional and subject to the conditions of the night.”
The sentence ended without the usual click; instead the speaker gave a small sigh, then silence.

He felt the words settle on his skin like cold dust.
Provisional.
Subject to the conditions of the night.
He repeated them under his breath, translating into the simpler tongue of a boy at a gate: maybe yes, maybe no, maybe never.

The bulbs flickered a final time.
One by one they surrendered, the way candles in a long corridor go out when the last servant leaves.
First the “I” vanished, then “U,” each departure gentle, almost courteous.
When only the “S” remained it seemed to tremble, holding on for him.
He lifted two fingers in a wave he had not managed as a child.
The bulb answered with a thin blink and went dark.

Darkness complete.
The board became a black mirror and in it he saw the platform stretch endlessly behind him, empty seats on empty benches, the clock hands stopped at the same rust-yellow twenty-three minutes past.
He listened for the next announcement but the loudspeaker had given up.
Somewhere far off a rat scraped metal against metal, keeping its own timetable.

He stayed where he was, coat collar raised, breathing the five letters like a rosary he could not finish.
No train approached; no wind returned.
Only the faint warmth of the bulbs’ after-image floated in his eyes, five white strokes rearranging themselves against the inside of his lids:

G D A I
becoming
I U B D S
becoming
nothing.

When he finally turned back toward the exit the motion felt borrowed, like a puppet string tugged by someone already walking away.
Behind him the board hung silent, its glass cooling, its message delivered and withdrawn in the same breath.
He did not look again; the letters were inside him now, ticking like a second heart counting down to a departure that had never been announced.
