Oliver lifted his chin. Leo—big, broad-shouldered, with a jaw that looked like it had been carved from the same limestone as the building—gave a small nod. Sasha, who had the sharp, angular beauty of someone who would grow up to be either a model or a CEO, simply said, "Sit."

Lyra sat.

Then Leo reached across the table and stole a grape from her tray.

"Why'd you get expelled?" Lyra asked, and then immediately wished she hadn't.

Leo shrugged. "Fighting."

"A lot of fighting," Isla added.

"Only when people deserved it."

Isla turned to Lyra, her expression unreadable. "He *is* actually very gentle. He just has a temper."

"I don't have a temper. I have a thermostat. It runs hot."

"That's the same thing, Leo."

"It's *not*."

Lyra laughed. It came out before she could stop it, a small, breathless sound, and the table went quiet. She felt her face heat up, but Isla was looking at her with something like approval.

"She laughs," Isla said. "Good. We were worried you were a robot."

"I'm not a robot."

"You stood in the middle of the cafeteria for four minutes without moving," Oliver said. "We timed it."

"You *timed* me?"

"Four minutes and twelve seconds," Leo confirmed. "That's a long time to stand still."

"I was looking for a seat."

"You could have asked."

The statement landed with a soft weight. *You could have asked.* As if it were that simple. As if asking were something she was allowed to do.

She didn't know how to respond, so she didn't.

That afternoon, after the final bell, she walked toward the front doors with her head down, replaying the day in fragments—the marble floors, the silver pen, the grapes Leo had stolen, the way Isla had said *you could have asked*.

"Lyra."

She turned. Isla was standing at the bottom of the staircase, arms crossed, coat unbuttoned. Behind her, the stained-glass window cast a blue patch across her shoulder.

"You're taking the bus?"

"The city bus, yeah."

"I don't—" Lyra started, and stopped. "I don't want to be a burden."

Isla tilted her head. The blue light slid across her cheek. "You're not a burden. You're a person. People help each other. It's not complicated."

But it *was* complicated, Lyra thought. It was complicated because she didn't know how to accept help without feeling like she was accruing a debt she couldn't repay. Her mother had raised her on self-sufficiency, on the careful management of expectations, on the understanding that no one owed you anything.

But Isla was still looking at her, patient, waiting.

"Okay," Lyra said. "Thank you."

Isla nodded once. Then she turned and walked back into the building, her footsteps echoing against the marble, sure and certain and unapologetic.

Lyra stood in the doorway for a moment, watching the blue light fade from Isla's shoulder, feeling the cold air curl around her ankles. She thought about the way Leo had stolen her grapes, the way Mira had smiled, the way Sasha had said *sit* like it was an order and an invitation all at once.

She thought about the hollow space inside her, the one that had been there for as long as she could remember, and how today it had felt—just barely, just at the edges—a little less empty.

The bus came. She got on. She sat by the window.

And for the first time all day, her hands were still.
