By the time I get to the alley, the rain has washed most of the blood away.

London does that. Chews things up, spits them out, lets the weather clean the rest.

Blue-and-white tape sags across the mouth of the side street, heavy with water. A uniform lifts it for me without asking my name. He doesn't know what I do, not really-just that DI Mercer told him to let me through.

"Evening, Ms Whitlock," he says.

"It's not evening," I mutter, ducking under. "It's stupid o'clock."

The alley is a slim seam between two old brick buildings, the kind that still pretend this used to be an industrial city and not a film set with Deliveroo. Sodium lights smear everything orange. Puddles glow with reflected blue flashes from the main road.

Two detectives huddle near the far wall, coats pulled up against the rain. I recognise one of them-Mercer, mid-forties, beard grown just past professional-not because of the badge, but because I grew up seeing him at the kitchen table, drinking tea with my dad and talking about "the job" in low voices.

He spots me and waves me over. "Whitlock. Sorry for dragging you out."

"You're never sorry," I say, and because it's him, I almost smile when I say it.

There's no body now, just the blank outline where it was. SOCO have done their sweep; only chalk markers and little numbered tents remain, shivering in the wind.

But the wall-

The wall is wrong.

Black spiderwebs of char snake across the brick, a burst pattern radiating from a patch about the size of my torso. At first glance it looks like an explosion scorch. At second, you see the order inside the chaos.

Lines. Hooks. Curves that want to be symbols.

The shards inside me wake up like someone just flicked a breaker.

A thin hum rises under my ribs, vibrating in time with the patter of rain on my hood. To everyone else, I'm just standing there, staring at brick. Inside, it feels like someone turned up the volume on a station only I can hear.

Mercer watches my face instead of the wall. "Well?" he says quietly. "Is it one of… yours?"

There's no "yours". There's no name for this. Not one I'll say out loud.

"Probably," I say automatically. My voice sounds normal. That's something. "Talk me through it."

He nods at the scorched brick. "CCTV glitched at twenty-three seventeen. Cameras on the street froze for eleven seconds exactly, then came back. Neighbours heard a scream, saw a flash. Patrol found a male, twenties, unconscious. Severe burns, heart stopped at the scene. He made it to St Thomas', but…" He tilts his head. "Four twelve a.m."

I swallow. "And this?"

"Wasn't here before," Mercer says. "Forensics say burn plus… unknown deposits. They've ruled out accelerant, fireworks, your basic idiocy. One of them mumbled something about 'exotic compounds' and then went for a lie down."

The hum in my chest crescendos, a sympathetic ache that makes my hands want to tremble. I shove them deeper into my coat pockets.

"Any drugs on him?" I ask.

"No. No obvious enemies, no witnesses who saw anyone else go in or out." His jaw tightens. "Just a kid walking home and then… this."

Rain runs in thin threads over the black lines, refusing to wash them away.

Of course it does.

I step closer.

"Aya." Mercer's voice is low. He knows how this looks. "You don't have to touch it."

We've had this conversation before. In hospitals. In my parents' kitchen. On nights when the hum got so loud I could barely hear him.

"Yes," I say, still looking at the wall, "I do."

Because this is the only part that ever makes any sense: contact. Pattern. The moment when the static becomes language, even if I don't understand why I understand it.

I stop about a foot away. Up close, the scorch marks resolve into something more precise. Not letters, not anything human, but structure. My eyes want to trace each line. My fingers itch.

You don't have to, something in me whispers. It's not quite a voice, not yet. More like pressure, like the air thickening around a storm.

I ignore it. Ignoring it is the only way I function in public.

I pull one hand out of my pocket, flex my fingers to shake off the rain, and press my palm lightly against the brick.

The world doesn't disappear, exactly. It… overlays.

For a heartbeat, the alley is still here-the wet brick under my hand, the hiss of rain, Mercer's solid presence at my back. And layered over it, like a second exposure, there's stone.

Smooth, cold stone, worn by centuries of bare feet and blood. The air thickens with incense and something sharper, like ozone. Runes blaze in a circle around me, carved deep into the floor, the same shapes that burned this wall but larger, more deliberate. They float above the stone in lines of pink-white light, humming in the same key as my bones.

Hooded figures ring the circle. Faces hidden, hands raised. Their mouths move in a chant I don't understand and somehow do, meaning bypassing words and dropping straight into my spine.

At the centre of the circle-at the centre of me-something vast and furious presses, trying to force its way through my chest.

My heart lurches. My breath stutters.

"Aya?"

Mercer's voice comes from the alley and the hall at once, cutting through the echo.

I drag my hand off the wall.

Stone collapses back into brick. The runes fade; sodium light bleeds back into the world. I'm shivering. My palm burns as if I've touched a stove, but when I look, the skin is unmarked.

Mercer is closer, worry hidden under the usual gruffness. "Still with me?"

"Yes," I lie. Then, "Mostly."

He searches my face, not pushing. He's the only one I've ever told about Japan, the only one who knows "Fuji" is not a fun travel story.

"Active?" he asks quietly, chin tilting towards the scorch.

I look back at the wall. The pattern has a… pulse, for lack of a better word. No light, nothing a camera would catch. Just a sense, like feeling someone stare at you from across a crowded room.

"Yes," I say. "There's a tether."

"In English, Aya."

"In English?" I take a breath, steadying. "Whatever did this is still… hooked in. If someone repeats this pattern elsewhere, there's a chance it'll fire again. Or worse, they can use this as a doorway."

Mercer swears under his breath. "Can you cut it?"

"I can try."

It's always "try". There's never a manual, never a guarantee. Just me, the pattern, and the thing under my skin that refuses to be ignored.

I step right up to the brick, close enough to feel faint heat radiating from it. I spread my fingers, hovering a breath away this time. I already know how this looks on CCTV: a woman zoning out in front of a wall. Harmless. Odd. Nothing more.

The shards shift.

They don't speak. They press. My vision blurs at the edges as little afterimages-hooks, slashes, loops-float in my peripheral vision.

My mind snags on one of the marks on the wall, a crooked loop intersected by a broken line. My brain wants to name it, the way you recognise a letter without remembering learning the alphabet.

Null, something in me says.

I didn't know that word yesterday. I'm sure of it. I still know what it means.

I exhale slowly. The air between my palm and the brick goes thick, like I'm pushing against warm glass. To Mercer, I know, it just looks like I'm concentrating.

"Come on," I whisper, too low for him to hear.

Not to the wall. To the pattern.

In my head, I picture a shape: a small, incomplete square. A diagonal line that never quite touches the corners. A refusal. A blank.

The hum in my bones shifts, aligning with that image. There's no visible glow, no fireworks. Just a sensation like air being sucked out of a room.

The almost-pulse in the scorch… stops.

The watching presence behind the pattern-whatever had its fingers hooked into this mark-lets go, or is pushed. It feels like a muscle unclenching in the back of my skull.

I sag a little, catching myself on the wall.

"Done?" Mercer asks.

"To me, yes." I move my hand away. The wall looks exactly the same: scorched, ugly, ordinary. "No more… charge. Forensics will still see whatever they saw before, but it won't bite anyone."

He studies me. "And you?"

"Still here." I try for a shrug. It comes out stiff. "Feels like someone flossed my nerves with a live wire, but I've had worse."

"That's not funny," he says.

"It's a little funny."

His mouth twitches, but the worry doesn't leave his eyes. "Any idea who's doing this?"

"Yes," I say, then grimace. "No. I know the style. The… grammar of it. Same as-"

"Same as the mountain," he finishes.

I nod. "But when I was there, they weren't… exporting."

The word feels wrong, too small for what I mean: the pattern spreading from that temple to an alley off Kennington Road.

"So we've got someone here using the same… language," Mercer says. He still won't call it magic. I don't blame him. "Can you track them through it?"

"I can read it," I say. "Tracing an author is… harder."

"But not impossible."

I don't answer. Not out loud.

He sighs. "Send me what you can. I'll bully forensics into being less useless."

I huff. "Good luck."

He steps back, letting the detective mask slide over his concern. "Go home, Whitlock. Try to sleep. Pretend you're still a normal citizen."

"Losing that battle daily," I say.

On my way out, the uniform lifts the tape again. He looks at me with the faint curiosity people reserve for those they've been told are "specialists" without any context.

I step back onto the main road. Sirens wail somewhere deeper in the city. Buses hiss past, spraying water. London carries on, oblivious.

In a dark shop window, my reflection looks back: a slim woman in a soaked coat, dark hair plastered to her cheeks, one vivid streak of pink catching the streetlight. For a moment, the streak seems brighter than it should be.

Just my imagination. Just fatigue.

The hum in my chest disagrees.

I hold my own gaze until headlights flare behind me, washing the glass in white. When it clears, it's just me again. No symbols in my eyes. No halo of runes.

No one else sees any difference.

I tuck my hands into my pockets and keep walking.

I wanted my life back when I came down off that mountain.

Instead, I got this.

And somewhere under the London rain, the temple's language burns its way across brick, waiting for me to answer again.
