Chapter # 1 - The Client in Bottle Green Saree

The old leather couch groaned under their weight.

Arjun had Priya beneath him, her back pressed into the cracked upholstery that still smelled of monsoon damp and stale cigarettes. Her kameez was bunched around her collarbone, the drawstring of her salwar loosened and shoved down past her hips. He had not bothered to undress her properly. His own trousers were pooled around his ankles, belt buckle clinking against the floorboards every time he drove forward.

Priya's breath came in short, punched-out gasps. Her knees were hooked over his forearms, her thighs spread wide, and Arjun could feel the heat of her cunt gripping him each time he pulled back. Sweat slid down the groove of his spine, soaked through the armpits of his shirt—he had not taken it off either, had only unbuttoned far enough to free himself. The fabric stuck to his skin, damp and clinging.

He thrust hard, the way he wanted to, the way she never complained about. Her head tipped back, mouth open, and a low sound escaped her throat—not quite a moan, something rawer than that. Arjun watched her face, the way her eyes squeezed shut then fluttered open, unfocused, looking past him at the water-stained wall. He did not care where she looked. Her body was here, yielding under his weight, taking what he gave.

The couch springs creaked in rhythm. Outside, the rain had started again, drumming against the corrugated awning below the window. The office was dim, only the desk lamp throwing a jaundiced pool of light across scattered case files and overflowing ashtrays. In this light, Priya's skin looked warm, almost amber, the deep brown of her nipples dark against the paler swell of her breasts. Arjun's gaze dropped to where their bodies joined—the slick gleam of her, the dark hair, the way she stretched around him. He pulled out almost completely, then slammed back in, and Priya's breath caught, her fingers scrabbling against the armrest.

"Arjun," she said. Just his name. No demand, no plea. An offering.

He did not answer. His rhythm grew rougher, less controlled, the slap of flesh against flesh louder than the rain. Priya's body jolted with each impact, her breasts swaying, her knees slipping from his forearms and falling open wider. She was letting him take, letting him use her, and the surrender in her body—the complete absence of resistance—was what pushed him toward the edge. Her submission was quiet, absolute. She did not claw at his back or demand more or whisper filth into his ear. She simply received him, her cunt clenching in involuntary pulses, her breath hitching in her chest like a small animal's.

He felt it build low in his gut—heat and pressure and the tightening coil of impending release. His grip on her hips hardened, fingers digging into the soft flesh hard enough to bruise. He drove into her faster, losing rhythm, chasing the end.

When it came, it tore through him in a long, shuddering wave. He groaned through clenched teeth, buried deep inside her, his whole body rigid. Priya made a small sound beneath him—something tender, almost wounded—and then went still, her hand coming up to rest lightly on his forearm. Not gripping. Just touching.

For a long moment, neither of them moved. Their breathing was the only sound in the room, rough and gradually slowing. Arjun could smell himself on her, could smell her on him—salt and musk and the faint jasmine oil she wore at her wrists. The rain had softened to a drizzle, a whisper against the window glass.

Then he pulled out. The sudden absence made Priya flinch, just barely, a tightening at the corners of her eyes. Arjun stood, stepped back, and pulled his trousers up with the mechanical efficiency of long habit. His fingers worked the buttons, tucked in his shirt. The belt buckle rattled once more and then was silent.

Priya sat up slowly. She tugged her salwar back into place, adjusted her kameez, smoothed her hair. Neither of them spoke. There was no awkwardness between them, no guilt—just the quiet aftermath of a need met, a tension released. She moved toward the small pantry alcove where the electric kettle sat among chipped mugs and a tin of cheap tea. The routine was old, familiar: sex, then tea, then back to work as though nothing had happened.

Arjun moved to his desk. He did not sit. Instead, he stood with his back to the room, one hand braced against the windowsill, staring out at the wet street below. Cars moved through puddles, headlights smearing gold across the asphalt. His reflection in the glass was gaunt, unshaven, dark circles under darker eyes. He looked like a man who had not slept properly in years. He had not.

He drank. The bottle of Old Monk sat on the filing cabinet where it always did, and he poured two fingers into a glass without thinking. The rum was cheap and burned going down, but it steadied something inside him. The restlessness. The hunger that sex could only blunt, never satisfy.

Priya set a cup of tea on his desk without being asked. She did not look at him. He did not thank her. The thanks were understood, implicit in their arrangement—she gave him her body when he needed it, he gave her employment and asked no questions about her life outside this office.

Ten past six. Evening had settled over Pune like a damp shroud. The fluorescent tube-light in the corridor outside flickered once, twice, and then steadied. Arjun was just raising the glass to his lips when the door opened.

She did not knock.

Maya Deshmukh stepped into the room, and the air shifted.

She was tall, even without heels—the flat Kolhapuri chappals she wore made no sound on the floorboards. Her sari was bottle-green Mysore silk, expensive but not ostentatious, the kind of garment that whispered money rather than shouting it. The pallu was draped expertly over her shoulder, the pleats falling straight and clean, and beneath it she wore a sleeveless blouse—also silk, also green, cut low enough to show the swell of her breasts and the hollow of her throat. Her arms were bare, the skin smooth and the color of toasted wheat, with a single gold bangle at each wrist. No other jewelry except small diamond studs in her ears and a mangalsutra that disappeared into her cleavage.

Arjun's gaze traveled over her body in a slow, unashamed sweep. At thirty-five, she had the kind of figure that came not from gyms but from genes—full-breasted, narrow-waisted, hips that curved out beneath the sari in a way that made his fingers itch. The silk clung to those hips as she moved, outlining the long line of her thighs. Her breasts were heavy, the blouse straining slightly across the widest part, and Arjun noticed the way the fabric pulled when she breathed—a small, unconscious detail that held his attention longer than it should have.

Her face was arresting rather than beautiful: sharp cheekbones, a full mouth painted a muted rose, dark eyes that had lines at the corners. Experience lived in those lines. Knowledge. The kind of knowledge that made a woman dangerous.

She was not an average housewife. Arjun knew it instantly, the way he knew when a client was lying or a witness was holding back. Everything about her—the stillness of her posture, the unhurried confidence of her movements, the way her eyes swept the shabby office without judgment—suggested a woman who had seen more, lived more, than she let on.

"Mr. Khot." Her voice was low, rougher than he expected, like good whiskey. "I called earlier."

Arjun took a sip of his rum. He did not rise. Did not offer her a seat. He let her stand in the doorway with the corridor light at her back, silhouetting the curve of her hips through the silk.

"You're late," he said.

Something flickered in her eyes—not offense. Amusement, maybe. Or recognition. As though she had been waiting for exactly this roughness, had counted on it.

"The traffic," she said. "Shivaji Nagar is a mess at this hour."

Arjun gestured with his glass toward the client chair facing his desk. The chair was as worn as everything else in this office, but Maya sat in it like it was a throne. She arranged her sari with practiced ease, the fabric pulling taut for a moment across her thighs before settling. The perfume she wore reached him then—something dark and floral, tuberose maybe, with an undertone of cardamom. It cut through the stale air of the office like a blade.

Priya had retreated to her desk in the corner, silent and watchful. Arjun could feel her eyes on them both. He ignored her.

"You want me to follow someone." It was not a question. She had said as much on the phone, and he had not forgotten.

"My husband." Maya opened the small leather purse she carried—good leather, Italian maybe, another quiet signal of wealth—and withdrew a photograph. She placed it on the desk between them.

Arjun did not pick it up. He looked at it where it lay: a man in his early forties, salt-and-pepper hair, a well-trimmed beard, smiling at the camera from behind a desk covered in blueprints. Rohan Deshmukh. Architect. The kind of man who wore polo shirts on weekends and probably played squash at the club.

"Infidelity," Arjun said.

Maya's expression did not change. "I believe so. Late nights. Phone calls he takes in another room. The usual signs."

"There's no usual." Arjun finished his rum and set the glass down on a stack of papers. "There's only what people do, and what they choose to hide."

"Then find out what he's hiding."

Her gaze was steady, unblinking. Up close, Arjun could see the faint discoloration under her eyes—concealer, carefully applied, but not quite perfect. She had slept badly. Her hands were folded in her lap, and he noticed that her nails were short, unpainted, one cuticle torn and red. A small violence. The only crack in her composure.

"Three days," Arjun said. "One hundred thousand, in advance and one hundred after the work is done."

"I know your rates." She reached into her purse again and produced a thick envelope, which she placed on the desk beside the photograph. The envelope was thick. She had come prepared.

Arjun did not touch it. He leaned back in his chair, studying her with the same unblinking attention he gave to crime scenes and witness statements. The sari draped over the swell of her breasts, the gold mangalsutra disappearing into shadow, the way her collarbones caught the light—he catalogued all of it. Not just because she was beautiful. Because beauty was information. The way a woman dressed and moved and met your eyes told you what she was hiding and how much it would cost to dig it out.

This one was hiding plenty.

"Your photograph is old," he said. "Taken before whatever started going wrong. You chose a picture where he still looks like the man you married."

Maya's lips parted slightly, then closed. The first genuine reaction he had drawn from her, and she did not like it.

"And you chose me," Arjun continued, "over half a dozen other private investigators in this city who have better offices and fewer bad habits. Why?"

She held his gaze. "Because you're the best, Mr. Khot. That's what I was told."

"By whom?"

"A friend." The word was a door closing.

Arjun smiled. It was not a pleasant smile. He reached for the envelope, picked it up, and slipped it into the drawer of his desk without counting the notes.

"Daily reports," he said. "Call before coming. And if I find something you don't want found, that's your problem, not mine."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

Maya stood. The movement was fluid, controlled, the silk of her sari whispering against the floorboards. She looked down at him—a rare thing, for a woman to look down at a seated man—and for the first time, her composure cracked just enough to let something sharp show through.

"I wouldn't be here if I didn't."

She turned and walked toward Priya's desk, where the secretary was already pulling out a notepad. Arjun watched her go. Watched the sway of her hips under the bottle-green silk. Watched the way she leaned forward slightly to give Priya her contact details, the posture putting a slight strain on the sleeveless blouse, the fabric pulling tighter across her back.

His mouth was dry. He wanted another drink.

He did not pour one.

Instead, he sat in the deepening darkness of his office, listening to the murmur of the two women's voices, and felt something shift inside his chest. Not desire—not only desire. Something older, harder. The hunter's instinct, waking from a long sleep.

Three days. The woman was lying about more than her husband's hours. She had chosen him deliberately, had brought cash and an old photograph and a story that was already fraying at the edges.

Arjun Khot had been a detective for nineteen years. He had solved cases that had stumped the police, had found people who did not want to be found, had seen the worst that men and women could do to each other. But he had never met a client who was searching only for the truth.

Maya Deshmukh was searching for something else. And whatever it was, it lived in the silence between their words, in the way her brown eyes had tracked his movements, in the slight, knowing smile she had worn when she first saw his office—as though the peeling paint and the overflowing ashtrays and the half-empty bottle of rum were exactly what she had been led to expect.

She left at twenty past six. The air in the office did not settle after she was gone.

Priya returned to her desk. She did not speak. Arjun did not ask her opinion. The rain had stopped, finally, and the silence that filled the office was heavier than the storm had been. On the street below, a dog barked twice and then fell quiet. The fluorescent light in the corridor buzzed like a trapped insect.

Arjun poured himself another drink. The envelope sat in his pocket, heavy with cash and unasked questions. He lit a cigarette and watched the smoke curl toward the ceiling—the same cracked ceiling he had stared at a hundred times before, though never with a woman like Maya Deshmukh lingering behind his eyes.

Three days. He would tail the husband, file his reports, collect his fee. It was simple work.

Nothing about the woman in the bottle-green sari had felt simple.

His phone rang. He let it ring. Whatever it was, it could wait until morning.

But the restlessness had returned, worse than before. He stubbed out the cigarette half-smoked, set down the glass untouched, and stood at the window, watching the wet street empty of pedestrians, the city folding itself into the dark. His reflection in the glass was the same as always—haggard, sharp-eyed, the face of a man who had spent too many years looking for other people's secrets.

Except now the face looking back at him was interested. Genuinely, dangerously interested.

The three days were going to be long ones. He could feel it in his bones.
