I heard her laugh before I saw the light under the door.

The songs my mother used to play on Sunday mornings. On cold nights, he would fold his coat around my shoulders before I realized I was shivering.

He had once driven forty minutes back across the city because I mentioned, only once, that the white roses in a hotel lobby reminded me of my mother.

The next morning, there had been white roses in every room of this penthouse.

That was the man I had almost married.

And this was the man behind the door.

"Adrian," Vanessa said again. "What if she finds out?"

I raised the phone closer.

There. That line mattered.

Adrian exhaled.

"She won't."

Not this ends tonight.

My throat tightened, but my hand steadied.

"You're sure?" Vanessa asked.

"Evelyn trusts me."

The words landed cleanly.
