The first thing Adrian Silver noticed was not me.

It was my daughter.

Elara sat near the far end of the council hall with one ankle crossed over the other, her black dress neat, her small hands turning a silver-and-blue moon cube as if the Coast Claiming Rite had been arranged for her amusement. Around her, Alphas argued over old sea borders, moon-stamped maps, and ancient rights carved into whale bone. She did not look up once.

That was my girl.

Five years old, too quiet for strangers, too sharp for comfort, and already better at hiding fear than most grown wolves.

I stood three steps behind the Lycan Court table, gloved hands folded in front of me, my hood lowered enough to shadow my face. The Tide-Warden mark at my throat was covered by a strip of black silk. I had chosen plain clothes on purpose: dark trousers, boots made for wet stone, a fitted coat without jewels. Nothing about me asked to be admired.

I had not come here to be admired.

I had come to collect a debt.

The hall belonged to Moon Council neutral ground, but Silvermoon Pack filled it like they owned it. Their guards lined the walls. Their elders took the front benches. Their women wore moonstone pins like tiny claims. At the center of that old arrogance stood Adrian Silver.

My former mate.

My former Alpha.

The man who had left me to die in black water while he held another woman through her birthday fever.

I had prepared for his voice. I had prepared for his scent. I had even prepared for the brutal pull of the Mate Bond if there was anything left of it under all the poison and salt.

I had not prepared for how little I felt when I saw him.

He looked almost the same. Taller than most men in the room, broad-shouldered, silver eyes cold, dark hair swept back from a face that had once made my foolish heart forget every warning my wolf gave me. The Alpha ring on his right hand flashed whenever he moved. Wolves still lowered their heads when he passed.

Good for him.

The sea had not lowered its head for me when it took me under.

"Silvermoon Pack renews its claim to the northern coastal sanctuary," Adrian said.

His voice carried without effort. It always had. Once, that voice could pull me from the other side of the packhouse. Once, when he said my name softly, my knees had gone weak.

Now I only heard command. Habit. A man used to being obeyed.

The Moon Council scribe dipped his pen. "Noted. Any counterclaim?"

No one spoke.

Of course they did not. The northern sanctuary was not just coastline. It was old power. Moonlit Harbor sat below it, and beneath that water lay wrecks, bones, broken vows, and one black ship the Council had pretended not to remember.

The Black Marrow.

My fingers tightened once inside my gloves.

At the table beside Adrian, Celeste Vale leaned closer to him. She looked exactly as I remembered and nothing like the helpless girl she performed so well. Pale dress. Soft mouth. Fragile hands. A scent of jasmine and sweet medicine drifting around her like a curtain.

She had made a life out of smelling innocent.

My wolf, Nyra, stirred in the back of my mind.

There.

I followed the line of her attention.

Adrian had stopped speaking.

His head turned slowly, not toward me, but toward the far side of the hall.

Toward Elara.

The moon cube clicked in my daughter's hands.

Once.

Twice.

Then she looked up.

The moment their eyes met, the air changed.

Adrian's pupils narrowed. His hand closed around the edge of the council table hard enough to crack the polished wood. A low sound moved through his chest, not quite a growl, not quite a breath.

Every wolf near him heard it.

Every wolf near him went still.

Blood knows blood.

No lie, no fake healer's paper, no poisoned story could change that.

Elara tilted her head. Her eyes were mine, gray-blue and unimpressed, but the shape of her face was his punishment. The same proud cheekbones. The same stubborn mouth. The same silver at the edge of the iris when her wolf pressed close.

Adrian took one step away from the table.

Celeste touched his sleeve. "Adrian?"

He did not seem to hear her.

The council moderator frowned. "Alpha Silver?"

Adrian moved.

Fast.

Chairs scraped. Someone gasped. Two guards at the aisle shifted as if to block him, then remembered who he was and stepped back.

He crossed the hall like a wolf breaking through brush, eyes locked on my child.

Elara did not run.

That nearly broke me more than if she had cried.

She only set the moon cube on her lap and watched him come.

I was already moving.

Adrian reached for her collar. His claws had slipped halfway from his fingers. Not fully shifted, but enough to tear cloth. Enough to frighten a child.

Enough to make my old self bleed.

I caught his wrist before he touched her.

Skin met leather.

Bone met memory.

For half a heartbeat, the hall vanished.

I was back in the rain outside Silvermoon packhouse, one hand over my stomach, begging a closed door to open.

Adrian, please. I think I'm pregnant. Please, just listen.

Then the memory snapped.

I twisted his wrist down.

Hard.

Adrian's knees bent before he stopped himself. Shock flashed across his face. Real shock. Not because someone had stopped him. Because I had.

"Do not," I said, "touch my daughter."

Silence fell so completely I heard Elara's small breath behind me.

Adrian stared at my gloved hand around his wrist. Then at my shoulder. Then, slowly, at my face.

My hood had fallen back.

The color drained from him.

It was a small thing. A private little death. I enjoyed it more than I should have.

His mouth parted.

No sound came out.

I released him with enough force to make him stumble back a step.

He caught himself, because men like Adrian always caught themselves in public. But his eyes stayed on me, wide now, burning with disbelief.

"Aurora?"

There it was.

My name in his mouth.

Five years ago I would have crossed a battlefield for that sound.

Today it only made me tired.

A whisper ran through the hall.

"Aurora Blackwood?"

"Silvermoon's dead Luna?"

"The one taken by Rogues?"

"They said she drowned."

"They said there was no body."

Celeste made a soft choking noise. Her chair scraped backward. "No," she whispered. "No, that's not possible."

I looked at her for the first time.

Her eyes were wide and wet. Beautiful performance. But fear moved under it, sharp and sour.

Good.

She remembered the sea too.

Adrian took another step toward me. "You were dead."

"Many people said that." I smoothed Elara's hair once, more for my own hands than for hers. "People say many stupid things when the truth would cost them too much."

His gaze dropped to Elara again. That blood-deep recognition hit him a second time. I saw it strike. Saw his wolf push against his skin.

"Who is she?"

I laughed once.

It came out colder than I meant it to.

"You charged across a Council hall with claws out, and now you ask who she is?"

His jaw tightened. "I asked you a question."

Old command. Old Alpha tone.

It slid off me.

"And I am not yours to answer."

Around us, the Moon Council moderator finally found his voice. "This is a formal Rite. Alpha Silver, step back."

Adrian did not.

So I lifted my left hand and pulled the black silk from my throat.

The Tide-Warden mark answered the hall before anyone else could. A crescent of deep blue light opened against my skin, crossed by three silver lines like waves under moonlight.

The council scribe dropped his pen.

One of Silvermoon's elders stood so fast his chair toppled.

Celeste stopped breathing.

I faced the room, not Adrian.

"Aurora Blackwood," I said clearly. "Tide-Warden of the Lycan Court. Appointed under King Rowan Ashborne. I am here to review all claims tied to Moonlit Harbor and the northern coastal sanctuary."

Then I turned back to Adrian.

"Including yours."

His face hardened, but too late. The first wound had already landed.

The dead Luna had returned.

Not crawling.

Not begging.

Not asking why he had not saved her.

I had returned with my daughter at my side and the Lycan Court at my back.

Elara slipped her small hand into mine.

Her palm was warm. Steady.

Adrian saw the movement. His eyes locked on our joined hands, then on the shape of her face again. His voice dropped.

"Aurora," he said, rougher this time, "whose child is she?"

I leaned down, picked up Elara's moon cube, and placed it in her lap.

Only then did I look at him.

"Not yours to touch," I said.

Not yet.

Not until the truth tore him open in front of everyone.
