The city of Cindervale never saw the sky; it saw only the underside of bridges and the bellies of low clouds. Steam from the dye-works rose like breath above the slate roofs, mixing with chimney smoke until everything smelled of wet wool and burnt violets. In the canal quarter the gas-lamps came on early, their flames too polite to push back the fog, merely tinting it the color of weak tea.

Lira stood on the iron footbridge that arched over Drizzle-Milk Canal, fingers curled around the cold railing. She had been counting the ripples made by dripping eaves—one, two, three—when the air tore open with a sound like silk ripping under water. A man stumbled through the slit, coat flapping as if the fog itself had coughed him up. He landed on his knees, one hand hugging a black violin case to his chest the way shipwrecked sailors hug driftwood.

Lira’s first instinct was to vanish; her second, to stare. Elves were common enough in Cindervale—this was a hidden enclave of magicians, after all—but curiosity was not. She stayed, invisible in her plain cloak, and watched.

The stranger lifted his head. Coal-dark hair stuck to a forehead glazed with sweat, yet his eyes held the stunned brightness of someone who had just seen the years collapse like dominoes. He touched the wet cobbles as if testing whether the world was solid, then opened the violin case a finger’s width and peered inside. Whatever he saw seemed to steady him. He shut it, stood, and looked straight at the bridge—straight at her.

“Evening,” he called, voice hoarse but polite, like a traveler asking directions in a church. “Is this still London?”

Lira hesitated. “Never was,” she answered. “You’re in Cindervale.”

The man blinked. “Never heard of it.” He glanced at the canal, the leaning warehouses, the lamp-light caught in the fog like fireflies trapped in gauze. “Smells different,” he muttered, more to himself than to her. “And the stars are wrong.”

He climbed the bridge steps. Lira’s pulse bumped; strangers rarely noticed her unless she wanted them to. When he reached the top he stopped an arm’s length away, breathing hard. Up close she saw his coat was wool, cut decades ahead of the tailors here, and the watch-chain at his waist ended in a snapped clasp, as though time itself had broken off.

“I’m Daniel,” he said. “Daniel Adler. I was—am—a violinist.” He lifted the case slightly, offering proof. “The last thing I remember is tuning on stage, 1922. Then the lights went white, and—” He gestured at the fog, the foreign roofs, the girl with leaf-shaped ears. “Here.”

Lira’s tongue felt thick. She had not spoken more than pleasantries in a month. “You walked through a fold,” she said. “Mages here call it a seam. They’re unstable.”

Daniel’s shoulders sagged. “So I’m stuck.”

“Probably.” She meant it as comfort; it came out verdict.

He rubbed his wrist, eyes roaming the bridge, the water, her face. “You have music here?”

The question struck closer than she liked. She nodded toward the violin case. “You already carry yours.”

A faint grin tugged his mouth. “May I play? It helps me think.”

Lira glanced around. The canal quarter after dusk was never empty—night-soil men, barge wives, spell-scavengers—but folk kept to shadows. No law forbade music, yet it drew attention, and attention was currency she could not spend. Still, something in the way he held the case—like it was the only clock still ticking for him—made her shrug.

“Softly,” she said.

Daniel opened the lid. Inside lay the violin, maple belly varnished the color of dark honey, bow curled like a black question mark. He lifted it, tightened the frog one careful turn, and set the instrument under his chin. The first stroke was barely a breath, a hush of horsehair that asked permission of the fog. The second found a thread of melody, minor, swaying. By the third the bridge itself seemed to lean closer, listening.

Lira felt the sound settle under her ribs. It was not elf-song; it carried the dust of jazz clubs, of subway rumble, of radio static still unborn. Future music, she realized, and the knowledge tasted of iron and lightning. She gripped the railing until the iron’s chill bit through her gloves.

When he stopped, the hush felt heavier than before. Somewhere a barge rope creaked. Daniel lowered the bow. “Still out of tune,” he murmured, “but the world’s wrong anyway.”

He looked at her then, really looked—at the silver pins holding her dark hair, the hollow beneath her cheekbone, the cloak washed so often its color had given up. “You play?” he asked.

Lira swallowed. “Used to.”

“Will you show me?”

She almost laughed. The request was absurd: a stranger, a foreign century, her own silence thick as canal ice. Yet the bridge swayed faintly beneath them, as if nudging her toward yes or no.

“Come,” she said instead of answering, and started walking. Daniel followed, footsteps echoing hers. They left the footbridge, slipped down an alley where the walls squeezed so tight the fog had to queue to enter. She led him past shuttered apothecaries, past sigil-chalked doors, until they reached a crooked house wedged between a cooper’s shop and a disused temple. Its upper window glowed faint as a firefly with bronchitis.

Inside, the stairwell smelled of cedar and candle stubs. Lira climbed, cloak brushing banisters flaky with age. On the third landing she pushed open her garret door. The room beyond was narrow, roof slanting so sharply Daniel had to stoop. Books made pillars along the walls; between them hung sheets of music, pages yellow, edges feathered by damp. None bore annotations in her hand. A spinet piano crouched beneath the window like an animal that had forgotten it once sang.

Daniel stepped in, eyes widening. He walked to the nearest page—a nocturne inked by some long-dead human—and touched the staff lines gently, as if counting pulse beats. “You collect?”

“I copy,” Lira said. “When the market’s slow. People pay for tunes from other ages.” She did not add that she had not played one aloud since the day her teacher vanished into the same seams that had coughed up this man.

Daniel set his violin on the table, then shrugged off his coat. The shirt beneath was plain, collar frayed; sweat had dried in faint rings. “May I?” He gestured toward the spinet.

Lira hesitated. The instrument had not been tuned since the last solstice; elf ears were cruel judges. But she found herself nodding.

He sat, cracked his knuckles once, and pressed middle C. The note croaked, a toad in a tin. Daniel winced. “It’s thirsty,” he said, and began to work the bellows pedal. Each pump drew a soft wheeze from the guts of the spinet, like an old man clearing his throat. Slowly the tone firmed. He tried a chord—still sour, but less ashamed.

Lira watched his profile: the intent brow, the mouth counting beats without sound. She realized she had not moved since entering; her cloak dripped on the floorboards, forming a dark ring. She unclasped it, hung it on a nail, and rubbed her chilled palms.

Daniel glanced sideways. “Your name?”

“Lira.”

“Lira,” he repeated, tasting it. “Fits.” He played a three-note fragment, minor third, falling. “That could be your motif.”

Heat crawled up her neck. “Motifs are for heroes,” she muttered.

“Or for people who need remembering.” His fingers stilled. “I’m starving,” he admitted, “but I’d trade a meal for a duet.”

She almost smiled; the muscles felt rusty. “There’s bread, and tea that isn’t entirely stale.”

“Deal.”

She busied herself at the tiny stove, kettle rattling. Behind her the spinet tried small phrases, each aborted, like birds testing a branch. Steam rose, carrying the scent of bergamot from leaves she could not recall buying. When she turned, Daniel had lined up three objects on the windowsill: his violin, the snapped watch, and a copper coin polished thin by thumbs. A traveler's altar, she thought.

She poured tea into chipped cups. He accepted his left-handed, bow-hand fingers still flexing invisible strings. They drank without toasting. Outside, fog pressed against the pane like something wanting in.

Daniel set his cup down. “So how does a seam open? Accident, or invitation?”

“Both,” Lira said. “Mages stitch time to mend mistakes. Sometimes the needle slips.” She did not add that the council hushed such slips, that bodies had been found turned inside-out by chronal backlash. She watched his face for fear; instead she saw calculation.

“Could they send me back?”

“Maybe. If they decide you’re worth the risk.” She stared into her tea. “Mostly they seal the tear and forget what fell through.”

Silence pooled, thick as wax. Then Daniel reached for his violin. “Play something with me,” he said quietly. “One tune. Let the house remember what it’s for.”

Lira’s stomach tightened. She pictured the sheets on the walls, mute witnesses. “I haven’t—” Her voice cracked. She tried again. “My hands might not obey.”

“Then let them guess,” Daniel said. “I’ll follow.” He tucked the instrument beneath his chin, bow poised. Waiting.

The lamp guttered; shadows tilted. Lira felt the garret lean inward, listening. She rose, moved to the spinet, and lifted the lid fully. The keys stared back, yellowed teeth of a sleeping beast. She placed her fingers—first, third, fifth—testing weight. The hammers inside stirred, shy.

Daniel drew a soft open-string A. It hung in the air, a rope thrown across darkness. Lira answered with the same pitch an octave lower, pedal sighing. The note wobbled, then steadied. Her pulse thudded at the hollow of her throat.

He smiled without looking, and began a slow descending line—four notes, rest, three notes. Future blues, sorrow wearing yesterday’s clothes. She found the parallel thirds, thumbs crossing like strangers shaking hands. The spinet protested, then gave in. Sound filled the room, small but alive, crawling into corners where dust had settled thick as fur.

They played eight measures, stopped together, breathing hard. The last vibration faded into the rafters. Lira realized her palms were damp, her knees unsteady. She lifted her hands from the keys as if they might scald.

Daniel lowered the bow. “Not heroes,” he said. “Just people. But the house remembers now.”

Outside, a canal barge horn moaned—curfew warning. Lira straightened. “You can stay till morning,” she said, surprising them both. “After that, the council will sniff you out.”

He nodded, sudden fatigue dragging at his shoulders. “Thank you, Lira.” He glanced at the empty wall beside the spinet, bare except for a single nail. “May I hang my coat there?”

She swallowed. “Yes.”

He did so, smoothing the collar. The garment dripped faintly. Lira fetched a blanket, laid it on the floorboards between piano and stove. Daniel sat, back against the wall, violin case across his lap like a guard dog. She retreated to her narrow bed, pulling the curtain.

Before she blew out the lamp she saw his eyes remain open, reflecting the flame. He was listening—to the creak of the house, to the hush outside, to the absence of music now that it had briefly existed.

Lira lay in darkness, fingers tingling. The room felt larger, as if the tune had pushed the walls a fraction apart. She waited for sleep, but sleep required silence, and silence had been chased away.

Across the garret Daniel’s breathing evened. The watch-chain glinted on the windowsill, its broken clasp a tiny mouth forever mid-sentence. Somewhere below, water lapped against stone, counting hours that did not belong to either of them.

She realized she had not told him the second rule of seams: once something crosses, the tear remembers the shape. It tugs. It wants to close, but it also wants to finish what it started.

The question lay between them, unspoken: whether a song could mend a rip in the world, or widen it.

Lira closed her eyes, palms resting on the blanket. In the hollow beneath her ribs a single note lingered, warm, uncertain, still vibrating.
